Lanark District 29 Summer 2020 Website: http://district29.rto-ero.org. Email: [email protected] President’s Message This message was emailed to District 29 members on June 1, 2020. In case RTOERO doesn’t have your current email address, or you don’t have an email account, it was decided to include the message in this newsletter. Another month has passed. It has been a difficult time, but with each person doing their part the spread of the virus is slowing and restrictions are being lessened across the province. Thanks to Provincial RTOERO, the District 29 Executive met through Zoom on May 13, 2020. Executive reports were prepared and sent out prior to the meeting so questions and comments were ready for discussion. As directed by Provincial, the June 2020 District AGM and executive election is postponed to a later date. Your current Executive will stay in place until elections can be held. All other meetings and social events, including To Hell with the Bell celebratory brunch on the first day of school, are postponed. Watch for the summer issue of the District 29 newsletter in late July for further information. District bursaries for graduates from each of the county high schools will be given now even though graduations may not take place until 2021. Congratulations to all students who are leaving to begin another stage in their lives. If you have questions, concerns or wish to comment on any information you receive from RTOERO, send along an e-mail or call. Continue to follow recommendations to keep yourself and others safe. Annual Report 2020 - Political Advocacy Shelley Lynch - [email protected]

RTOERO's political advocacy topics for 2020 Geriatric Health Care Canada’s population is aging. In 2012, almost one in seven Canadians was a senior. Now the number is more than one in six. By 2030, that will jump to nearly one in four. Our health care and social systems need to re-think how to address and rising needs of this huge demographic. The health system, too, has tended to be oriented to deal with acute care, not for the chronic needs of seniors. The system has also been hospital-based, with less focus on home care and community-based care. Environmental Stewardship Responsible use of resources, conservation, protecting our air, land, and water – improving in all areas is critical to a sustainable future. Individuals, companies, industry groups and governments all have a part to play in environmental stewardship. We need to maintain the viability of our ecosystems for our children, our grandchildren and ourselves. Seniors Strategy Seniors are Canada’s fastest growing demographic. Gaps in our healthcare and social policies are creating barriers – to seniors’ independence, and to their essential role in vibrant, healthy communities and economies. Tackling these issues independently won’t give us the results we need. A coordinated seniors strategy at all levels of government, with dedicated funding and accountable goals, will ensure we meet the evolving needs of seniors. RTOERO support during education labour action Although RTOERO is a non-partisan organization, it publicly expressed its opposition to education funding cuts. Districts were encouraged to support local unions and funds were made available to support striking education workers. District 29, Lanark chose to purchase a plant for each school and attach a note of support. Many RTOERO members demonstrated their solidarity with their working colleagues by joining them on the picket line or bringing coffee/treats. COVID-19 RTOERO continues to advocate for members and seniors during this global pandemic. Letters have been written to federal and provincial governments on a number of vital issues. 1. Long-term residential care 2. Pharmacy dispensing fees 3. Travel vouchers and refunds 4. Federal financial assistance for seniors In addition, Toronto General Hospital Research Institute's COVID-19 research project was the recipient of our organization's annual $10,000 donation for 2020. Because of the importance of this research, the board of directors matched the donation - bringing our total contribution to $20,000. RTOERO - Government invitation to consult Ontario budget - RTOERO provided a submission to the Ontario budget highlighting ways in which our political advocacy issues connect to government priorities. Poverty reduction strategy - RTOERO provided a response to the new Ontario poverty reduction consultation.

Charitable Foundation Report

Since the foundation was founded in 2011, many projects have been funded that fulfill our vision to enhance the lives of aging adults. This year the Foundation announced $100,000 in new funding for projects that impact social isolation and loneliness. For the first time, the Foundation is inviting expressions of interest from researchers across Canada. Four grants of $25,000 will be awarded. When a member passes, a donation in their honour is made to the RTOERO Charitable Foundation. Share the Wealth Draws are also held to increase our donation. This year $425 was donated from our district. Anne Graham - [email protected]
