The Center at Camden County College focuses on the needs and interests of educators and the community at large. Its goal is to create an informed citizenry through exploration of humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and issues critical to a democratic society. Citizens have the opportunity to meet scholars, scientists, government officials and business leaders to explore historical and current issues and discuss societal problems and their solutions.

As you know, The Center has been forced by the covid 19 crisis to shift all of the mini-courses to online courses. Under the circumstances, there are no enrollment limits on the size of enrollment. Yearly members and those who registered for one course in the summer can now register for as many courses as you wish, which you can watch in your leisure at a time that you choose, since they are not interactive. It would be very helpful to The Center if you enrolled in a number them, even all of the summer courses.

Many museums house and display stolen goods, should these items be returned to their rightful places of origins or are they better off in the hands of seemingly prestigious institutions?

ROCK AND ROLL: A SURVEY OF THE 20TH CENTURYINSTRUCTOR: David Cesarano

TOPICS:

Week 1: A Deal with the Devil: The roots of rock are found in the fertile soil of jazz and blues. The guitar is rock’s signature instrument and Robert Johnson sold his soul for musical immortality. African American music was repackaged for American Bandstand and Elvis’ hips were banned from TV.

Week 2: Free Love and Vietnam: The British invaded to the hysterical screams and swoons of young women. The tumultuous 1960s were accompanied by a vibrant era of tremendous cross-pollination between genres, races, and ethnicities by bands unafraid to admit their drug use and libidinous lascivity during a time of war and protest.

Week 3: Save Us from Disco: The 1970s were a time of disillusionment yet rock and roll not only survived, it thrived. This session peeks at the birth of punk, heavy metal, glam metal, and progressive rock.

Week 4: Welcome to the Jungle: The synthesizer nearly overthrew the guitar as the primary weapon of rock during the New Wave yet hair metal and hard rock surged on, embracing excess louder than before. A second British invasion was cut short by Nirvana as Seattle grunge defined the nihilism and postmodernity of the 1990s.

Week 5: Shock Rock, “Frat Boy” Rock... and the Death of Rock?: Beyond 2000, corporatism and the internet would immaculate rock and roll, which now exists in a very precarious position.

TWENTIETH CENTURY REVOLUTIONSINSTRUCTOR: Mark Blystone

TOPICS:

Week 1: The Russian Revolution: Russians go from peasants under a Tsar to comrades of the Soviet Union. The ideas of Lenin frighten the rest of the world.

Week 2: The Chinese Revolution: After nearly a quarter-century of Civil War, Communists emerge victorious under Mao Tse-Tung. This will forever alter the balance of power in the Far East as hundreds of millions of Chinese become part of the People’s Republic.

Week 3: The Cuban Revolution: The largest island in the Caribbean violently emerges from a half-millennium of Spanish and American influence. Fidel Castro seeks to impose socialism while the Soviet Union sees an opportunity.

Week 4: 1968: With the United States mired in the Vietnam War and torn by unrest at home, revolutions break out in European capitals with a ferocity not seen since 1848. Women and minorities also seek new opportunities in the form of dramatic social change.

Week 5: The Eastern Bloc: As the Soviet Union’s grip on power begins to dwindle, Eastern Europeans seek regime change and modernization. Aided by the United States and Great Britain, it seems the Cold War will end in a people’s revolution.
