America the Beautiful

O beautiful for spacious skies

For amber waves of grain

For purple mountain's majesties

Above the fruited plain!

Chorus

America, America, God shed His Grace on thee,

And crown thy good, with brotherhood From sea to shining sea.

Oh beautiful for patriot dream,

That sees beyond the years.

Thine alabaster cities gleam,

Undimmed by human tears.

Chorus

Scout Vespers (Tune: Tannenbaum)

Softly falls the light of day,

As our campfire fades away.

Silently each Scout should ask:

"Have I done my daily task?

Have I kept my honor bright?

Can I guiltless sleep tonight?

Have I done and have I dared,

Everything to be prepared?"

Outdoor Code

As an American, I will do my best to—

Be clean in my outdoor manners.

I will treat the outdoors as a heritage. I will take care of it for myself and others. I will keep my trash and garbage out of lakes, streams, fields, woods, and roadways.

Be careful with fire.

I will prevent wildfire. I will build my fires only where they are appropriate. When I have finished using a fire, I will make sure it is cold out. I will leave a clean fire ring,

Scout Camp is a Safe Place

Summer camp, and all troop camp events are a special place be-

cause it is where scouts learn, grow. But it is also a time to help

other scouts. Some scouts may experience home sickness, or strug-

gle to perform with the group as a team member. Each scout needs

to help other scouts at any time, or in anyway that will help all

scout succeed!

A strong Troop is a strong team, and no one team member is any

more or less important than another. Scouts, be sure to help your

team members when ever you can.

Summer Camp Rules

1. No liquid fuels may be used in camp for fire starting.

2. Each scout must have his Totin’ Chip / Firem’n Chit card.

3. No ―moonlight swimming‖! NO EXCEPTIONS.

4. Adult supervision must be present at all times. At least two adults

are required in camp.

5. Keep ―horse play‖ to a minimum. More Scouts are injured in

horseplay than from any other cause.

6. No firearms, fixed blade knives, archery equipment, ammunition,

fireworks, or other propellant exploding devices.

7. Shoes must be worn in camp at all times to prevent cut feet or

puncture wounds. No open toed shoes either.

8. No Scouts should leave camp property. Leaders must inform the

Camp Office when they leave. The Scoutmaster must checkout with

the Camp Office any Scout leaving camp before that Scout may

leave.

9. Alcoholic beverages, and drugs are not allowed in camp under

any conditions.

10. No putting trash down the latrine, or defecating in the woods.

11. Don’t enter another scout’s tent. Ever.

12. Always use the buddy system.

Violation of regulations 3, 6, or 9 will require dismissal from

camp.

Page 8: Summer Camp Handbook

Quartermaster

The Troop Trailer is organized so that we can easily find the equipment and tools that we need. Only the Quarter-

master is given a key to the Trailer, and no other scouts

may retrieve equipment or put equipment away without the Quartermaster.

Mess Kits & Dishwashing

Each scout must have his own Mess Kit and Water Bot-tle. They must be clearly marked with each scouts name.

Everyone is responsible for keeping cleaning their mess kits clean and properly stowing them after each meal.

Shower Building

A SCOUT IS CLEAN. All Scouts and leaders in camp are encouraged to make use of the camp’s hot water show-

ers located just across from the Hay Pavilion. Leaders, please give attention to the cleanliness of your Scouts.

They should get up in time to wash, brush their teeth and clean up before breakfast. Adults must shower sepa-

rately from youth.

Suttlers Trading Post

Suttler’s Trading Company is located in front of the Mar-

torana Pavilion and is open during the following hours

9 a.m. to Noon 2 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. 7 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Suttler’s carries a wide range of items, including merit badge pamphlets, candy, craft projects, camp shirts,

camp hats, patches, pins, personal items, Scout equip-ment and mugs. If you do not see it, please ask them!

Scouts will have the opportunity to earn Troop Scout Bucks

through good deeds and actions becoming a scout. Troop

Bucks may be spent at the Trading Post.

I Met A Bear

The other day, [echo] I met a bear, [echo]

Out in the woods, away out there. [Point]

He looked at me, I looked at him,

He sized up me, I sized up him.

He says to me, ―Why don’t you run?‖

―I see you ain’t got a gun.‖

And so I ran, away from there,

And right behind me was that bear.

Ahead of me, there was a tree.

Oh glory be, oh what a tree

The lowest branch was ten feet up,

I’d have to jump and trust to luck.

And so I jumped into the air,

But I missed that branch away up there.

Now don’t you fret, and don’t you frown,

I caught that branch on the way back down.

That’s all there is, there ain’t no more,

Unless I meet that bear once more.

Troop Songbook

Don’t be afraid to join in and sing!

Singing in scouting requires mainly enthusiasm, not necessarily vocal

control!

Learn a song that you have always wanted or wished you could sing—

and volunteer to lead it.

Use the songs at troop meetings,

campfires, services or where ever two or more scouts join together.
