PART 1. Enrichment Classes

1. Arts: Acrylic Painting

Course Description: Our online art classes will help children develop their creativity, problem-solving skills, and imagination. Children will have a great opportunity to present and exhibit art works that express their own unique experiences and art styles. They will learn how to use advanced structures and functions and how different visual characteristics and art styles convey different ideas. Students will be able to gain a solid foundation in the use of tools and materials, the development of skills, and the invention of new ways to create. In this class, students will work with acrylic colors and explore the many ways that paint can be handled. The versatility of acrylics will be demonstrated from delicate watercolor-like washes to super thick, heavy structural impasto techniques. The process used to teach each project is an easy, step-by-step method that will inspire your child into a painting frenzy! Students will learn and apply basic acrylic painting techniques to complete each project. This course is designed to give children the tools they need on their artistic journey towards self-expression, reflection, and creative thinking.

11. Jackbox Games Party Time

Course Description: Jackbox Games offers a fun and exciting way for your children to interact with their friends remotely while refining their ability to think quickly, creatively, and wittily. Join us for these laugh-out-loud games where you’ll discover obscure trivia facts, create new words, convince everybody that your opinion is the most correct opinion in a high-stakes debate tournament, and more. Funny, entertaining, and at times educational, these games will make your children split their sides, bust their guts, and slap their knees all while practicing important skills such as critical thinking, public speaking, and speech and debate. Fibbage 3 Do you know what the elephants in a Vienna zoo are allowed to eat once every year? Neither do we! But in Fibbage 3, you’ll learn that the answer (spoiler alert) is Christmas trees, as well as even more strange yet fascinating trivia facts. What’s the catch? You have to work to get the real facts. A trivia prompt will be generated with a blank in the sentence. For example, “Once a year, the elephants in Vienna’s zoo are allowed to eat _________.” It’s your job to fill in the blank with a word or a phrase that you think will fool everybody else into believing a fake piece of trivia. Maybe it’s more believable that these elephants will eat peanuts once a year, or a rack of lamb! Dictionarium What does the word “damble” mean? What about “pwubby”? Interestingly enough, they both mean...trick question! These words don’t exist—they can mean whatever you want them to mean, and you can use them however you want in a sentence: as a noun, or a verb, or an adjective, or even an interjection! In Dictionarium, you’ll learn all about language and just how arbitrary it can be as you create 1) a definition for a randomly generated fake word, 2) a synonym for your newly defined fake word, and 3) a real, grammatically correct sentence using your fake synonym for your fake word. Bracketeering If you’ve ever thought that your friends have the wrong opinion about which Harry Potter book is the best, then Bracketeering is the game for you! This is the friendliest, most casual debate tournament you’ll ever compete in. Every player submits an answer based on the category. These answers are then pit against each other, with the one that receives the most votes advancing onto the next stage. This continues

until the one and only truth is decided. Knowing how to argue and persuade other people that your opinion is correct is key to cinching that championship! Survive the Internet In an increasingly globalized world connected by the Internet, a new and frankly confusing Internet culture has taken us by storm. One important aspect: making people look ridiculous online! Survive the Internet is all about making your fellow players look as dumb as possible by twisting their comments through creating an unreasonable context. While confusing at first, it’s easy to catch on after a few rounds—which describes the Internet perfectly too! Civic Doodle Calling all artists—Doodle Valley is looking for talented (or untalented) people to complete the unfinished murals littered around the city! Players work together in real-time to create a masterpiece, and the final mural will be displayed on the best walls and water tanks found in Doodle Valley. Push the Button A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...you and your spaceship-mates awake from your cryosleep because aliens have infiltrated the ship! It’s now a race against time to figure out who among you is an alien and who is a human. Through a series of tests and much argument, it’s up to one brave shipmate to choose to PUSH THE BUTTON and accuse people of being aliens! Only a unanimous vote will send the accused into outer space, but be careful of accusing the wrong people... PART 3. Afternoon Academic Classes

1. Phonics Lessons for Kindergarten

Course Description:

Phonics is a method of teaching reading and writing. It’s based on the relationship between the sounds of the spoken language (phonemes) and the letters of the written language (graphemes). When children read using phonics, it is also called decoding or sounding out words. Understanding phonics is a basic part of being a skilled reader.

Explode the Code will be the core curriculum for this Phonics class. Explode the Code will help your student build the necessary literacy skills needed for reading success: phonological awareness, decoding, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and spelling.

Explode the Code Assessment:

Beginning this week, we will start this course with a one-on-one evaluation based on the Explode the Code Assessment to determine which class level your kid will be placed in. The assessment helps the teacher better match your student's skill level to the skills introduced in our kindergarten phonics classes.

The evaluation will take about 20 minutes and will cost $15. Please sign up for the Assessment option if you would like to request for an Phonics Evaluation for your child. The Assessment is required for students to be enrolled in the Phonics Lessons. Please choose both Assessment and Phonics Lessons when you enroll online.

4. Advanced Reading: Disney Film Adaptations vs Original Fairy Tales

Course Description:

Most people think of Disney animation films when they hear the phrase “fairy tale.” Films like Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and Frozen have come to be a cultural centerpiece of human civilization, but many don’t know the origins of these massively successful Disney adaptations.

This course will encourage students to compare and contrast the Disney film end products with their written source material. Every class will begin with a foundational discussion of that day’s fairy tale before students read the fairy tale itself. Following the reading, students will be shown clips of the corresponding Disney film and will be encouraged to analyze how Disney has adapted the source fairy tale. They will dive into the original text, dissecting the elements of each fairy tale and refining their reading comprehension through identifying similarities and differences between the plots of the original fairy tale and the more well-known Disney version.
