Summit a high 12,095 feet on Independence Pass, the highest paved mountain pass that also crosses the U.S. Continental Divide. Due to heavy snowfall during the wintertime, the pass is closed isolating Aspen from the east. Once the weather turns warmer, the pass opens and cars begin flooding into Aspen. Known to be a popular destination, many visitors plan a stop at the summit overlooking the high alpine tundra where they find themselves above the treeline amongst towering peaks known as 14ers. To the east you will find Mount Elbert, the tallest peak in Colorado and second tallest in the continental U.S. Along the drive you may encounter gushing waterfalls, scampering marmots, avid rock climbers, and summertime skiers! This drive is also famous for being part of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge route since 2011.

Located 18 miles east of Aspen on Hwy 82Pass opens at the end of May & closes in November, depending on snowfall.

The St. Regis legacy provides great insight into the early 20th century history where the Astor’s were highly influential within the society of the NY 400, and created new expectations for hotels and travelers. Today, The St. Regis features a tradition of impeccable service, innovation & style around the world in the collection of 61 hotels.

The St. Regis Story

1904 Colonel John Jacob Astor IV broke ground for the first St. Regis Hotel on the corner of 5th Avenue and 55th Street in New York City. While visiting family on Lake St. Regis in the Adirondacks, John’s niece, Helena, recommended he name his new hotel “St. Regis”. Signifying their family getaways to the lake, which was conveniently named after a French Monk who was known for his hospitality to travelers.

1905 St. Regis NYC opened their doors standing at 19 stories high, and was now the tallest hotel in NYC. The hotel was described as the most lavaishly furnished and finely appointed hotel in the world, boasting Louis XV furniture from France, marble floors and hallways, Waterford crystal chandeliers, rare wood paneling and antique tapestries and rugs. The hotel was revolutionary and iconic in everyway.

1912 After helping his pregnant wife and nurse into a lifeboat, John Jacob Astor IV sadly pershied on the sinking of the Titanic on April 15.

1988 Hotel declared a designated landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.

1999 Starwood Hotels & Resorts acquires The St. Regis New York and begins expanding the legacy by lauching five new St. Regis hotels, Aspen being one of them.

1880 Caroline Astor, mother of John Jacob Astor IV, created the covet-ed rituals that endure at St. Regis today: midnight suppers and after-noon tea to name a few.

1934 The iconic Bloody Mary cocktail is created by head bartender, Pernand Petiot, at The St. Regis New York.

1966 When acquired by ITT Sheraton Corporation there was a popular late dinner and dancing club outfitted in Tiffany’s furnishings, Maisonette, that attracted a legion of celebrities, statesman & world figures. Guests such as Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Alfred Hitchcock and the Apollo 14 astronauts were spotted in the club.

Aspen’s heritage is a unique mix of Ute Indians, silver mining, farming & ranching, and contemporary Aspen known for the extreme summer and winter sports with a buzzing cultural vibe.

Aspen’s Roots1080 Ute Indians were expected to utilize this land for nearly 800 years before being driven out. They found this area to be rich in hunting, fishing and an ideal summer camp.

1879 Prospectors discovered silver in the valley and named the area Ute City, which we know as Aspen today.

1880 Ute Indians are forced out of Colorado by settlers into the Northeast region of Utah known as Fort Duchesne.

1887 Aspen grew to the third largest city in Colorado due to the arrival of two railroads and saw great prosperity in the silver mining of one-sixth of the United States.

1893 The U.S. Government repealed the Sherman Silver Purchase Act bringing the silver mining to an abrupt halt causing Aspen’s great prospertiy to plunge into a 50-year depression also known as the “Quiet Years” where ranching and farming ruled the valley.

1930 Commercial skiing presented itself as an economic hope but World War II intervened and The U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division moved in for training during the war.

1946 With vision from the returning vetrans who saw the potential for a ski industry, Aspen completed the world’s longest chairlift.

1950 FIS World Ski Championships were held in Aspen solidifying it’s reputation as a world-class ski resort.

1949 Goethe Bicentennial assisted Aspen to be known for it’s vast cul-ture. The “Aspen Idea” is still commonly known in town through many local institutions & non-profits.
