There are many hikes to choose from in Ventura County. Too many to count,

but here are three day hikes in extremely diverse locales that will leave you completely caked in trail dust, yet utterly satisfied.

Sandstone Peak, Santa Monica Mountains Recreation AreaDifficulty: ModerateDistance: 6 miles round trip

Calling all rock hounds — This high point of the coastal Santa

Monica Mountains is your dream escape from Ventura County’s urban jungle. Hiking the Mishe Mokwa Trail to the summit (once a 10,000-foot volcano) delivers a peek into Sandstone’s 16 million-year history. You’ll pass layer upon layer of sedimentary rock and marine deposits of lime-stone, chalk, dolostone, conglom-erate, breccias and shale. You can’t miss them — lots of knobby handholds caked in multi-colored lichen. Bonus: sweeping views of five coastal Channel Islands from the 3,111-foot mountaintop.

Scorpion Anchorage to Yellow Banks, Santa Cruz Island, Channel Islands National ParkDifficulty: StrenuousDistance: 10 miles round trip

Explore a 19th century island ranch, watch for island fauna and explore cave-pocked canyons and a secluded beach on this trek along the southeast edge of the largest of California’s Channel Islands. After leaping from an Island Packers boat at Scorpion

Anchorage, head southeast on the old ranch road to Smugglers Cove. After ascending to a windswept plateau, keep Anacapa Island on your left. Bear left and straight at the next sign, then descend past the olive tree orchard into Smuggs. From there, head west past the old ranch house, across a dry creekbed to another old ranch road. Follow it to the next cove, a deserted beach strewn with drift-wood and tattered fishing gear, and reward yourself by cooling in the breathtaking turquoise-blue water. Bonus: Keep an eye out for native island foxes. After nearly going extinct, they’re bounding

Dry Lakes, Los Padres National ForestDifficulty: StrenuousDistance: 10 miles round trip

No need for trunks or a biki-ni. The Dry Lakes are just that, bone-dry, high in the Matilija Wilderness. However, this is a spectacular backcountry hike to several of these geological natu-ral wonders. The hike is a lung-buster from the get-go, ascend-ing a steep spine of a ridge to four dry lakes otherwise known

If you are looking for a memorable day somewhere in Ventura County this sum-mer, there are a few inexpensive places for hands-on experiences, especially for the younger children. Kids like animals,

and whatever type of animal they want to get up close and personal with, you have a choice. If it is farm animals they enjoy watching and feeding, take a swing by the Underwood Farms in Moorpark any day of the week. If exotic ani-mals are more up your alley, the Exotic Animal Training Management program at Moorpark College puts on live shows every weekend, several times a day. And, if older kids are looking for fun, there is the spectacular Air Show 2009 at the Camarillo Airport at the end of August. Children can even go up in a plane before or after the show. So go out and have some fun with your kids this summer!

Underwood Farms in MoorparkThis pick-your-own farm has been a long-

time farm experience destination for the city folk, but it is just as much fun for locals. In season now through June: strawberries, black-berries, apricots and all types of salad vegeta-bles. July through October: cucumbers, squash, Valencia oranges, green beans, raspberries, black-eyed peas, heirloom and beefsteak tomatoes, peppers, chilis and Roma tomatoes. October and November: gourds and pumpkins.

There is a farm animal center on the prem-ises with animals the kids can feed and watch. It has what you would find on a typical farm: goats, ducks, chickens, sheep, cows, rabbits and a couple of emus. The Animal center also has train rides, wagon rides, Moon Bounce, mining for gems, and an animal show on the weekends.

A farm camp will be held for the younger children weekly this summer, where they can learn about the crops and the animals, culmi-nating in an animal show for the parents.

Open seven days a week, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission: Weekdays $3 Weekends $5 Address: 3370 Sunset Valley Road, MoorparkContact: 529-3690

People searching for ways to stretch their summer vacation dol-lars are finding that Ventura County’s

varied attractions and unique accommodations make it a per-fect place for a staycation.

There are campgrounds fea-turing ocean views and nearby lakes, as well as mountainous pine-covered wilderness areas suitable for backpacking trips.

Locals looking for a more lux-urious camping experience are trying the Ventura Beach R.V. Resort, which offers a general store, bike rentals and a swim-

ming pool.Park Manager Gracie

Willoughby says about 80 per-cent of her customers travel less than 100 miles. “They don’t have to waste all the money and gas, but they’re not at home,” says Willoughby. “They get to go to the beach, they can go hiking in the mountains since we’re still close by, they do the bike rides, but they don’t really have to trav-el far away to do it.”

Willoughby says her guests escape their everyday real-ity. “They feel like they are away from home because they didn’t bring the worries, they didn’t bring the work,” says Willoughby. “They say, ‘For that short weekend, I’m away

from everything.’ ”Campers also save money by

cooking out. “They’re not spend-ing all the money going out to dinner because now they’re bar-becuing at a fire pit. You get to be with the whole family but you’re not spending $100 for a dinner,” says Willoughby.

The Lake Casitas and Lake Piru Recreation areas are also good options for easy camping trips and boating. An elaborate water park at Casitas adds to the vacation vibe, and there’s a disc golf course, too.

Several local bed and break-fast establishments also make visitors feel far away or trans-ported into the past without leav-ing the county.

Piru’s Heritage Valley Inn was built back in 1890. It’s near Ventura County’s only National Historic Landmark, Rancho Camulos.

The Rancho partly inspired the hugely popular 1884 book Ramona, and when a 1910 movie version was made, the hotel played host to stars like Mary Pickford. Early California tour-ists flocked to see the fictional home of Ramona.

Ventura’s Bella Maggiore Inn feels a bit like traveling to the sunny Mediterranean coast. A front-desk clerk said they fre-quently serve parents who live in Ventura looking for a romantic night away from their kids.

Ojai’s Lavender Inn provides a full breakfast and evening wine-and-cheese hour at no additional charge, and it also offers cooking classes, accord-ing to innkeeper Beth Keenan. “It’s a huge value because you’re not just getting a place to sleep. It’s a whole experience you’re getting,” says Keenan. “It’s relaxing, and you get to meet other people.”

Keenan hears from many guests who feel the hassle of flying to far-flung destinations is too much trouble when com-pared to local attractions they may have overlooked before.

“A lot of people are not so willing to get on a plane any-more. It’s really nice to go some-place and relax, and still feel relaxed when you get home,” she says Keenan. F

Stories and photos by

by J.R. [email protected]

W hen it comes to good summertime dining in Ventura County, I have to admit my

restaurant taste buds begin tak-ing a backseat. Summer is the time of hikes, beach walks, fairs and backyard and garden parties. And it is the time of picnics, bar-becues and potlucks.

However, there is one absolute must for me when it comes to anticipation and salivating taste buds. What this one culinary treat

is and where it can be found will be revealed a little farther along in this article. In the meantime, I want to briefly give some ideas for your own picnics, or places for your potluck ingredients.

For the best in summer good-ies, I can’t help but think of the amazing treats found in our local Farmer’s Markets. While I visit several of these markets weekly, I also still like the old-fashioned produce stands found in many farm areas of the county. One of my favorites is Ralph’s Garden Fresh Produce, 18909 E. Telegraph, just east of Santa Paula on the way toward Fillmore.

While most stands carry abso-

lutely farm fresh produce Ralph’s always has the first and last local asparagus, lots of miniature veg-gies and blossoms, perfect (and early) white corn and a full line of local jarred olives, jams, nuts, and whatever the local farmers offer on any given day.

If Ventura is your home, you can find a terrific assortment at Trace Ornelaz’s Pierpont Produce, 1038 S. Seaward, corner of Seaward Avenue and Pierpont Boulevard.

Not only does Ornelaz’s always have the most perfect artichokes and lots of exotic local offerings, she also has unusual jams and specialties found nowhere else. You will be phenomenally happy when you taste her banana jam. Sounds odd, I know, but your taste buds will crave this delight imme-diately after savoring it for the first time.

By the middle of the summer you can get everything you need for a superb picnic at the Upper Ojai Market (12679 Ojai Santa Paula Road, Ojai 525-4344).

By then, owner Jeffray Frahen and his family hope to have a clas-sic 1950s station wagon available for rental for that extra-special pic-nic; he is even planning a horse-drawn carriage for that old-fash-ioned country outing. All of that is for you to explore.

For me, I’ll go down the road from that market to have the most perfect taste sensation of the summer in Ventura County: Dan and Karen Beasley’s Summit (12689 Ojai-Santa Paula Road, Upper Ojai 933-9898) looks like any other remote hamburger stand, which it is. Great fries, great burgers, etc. — the usual. But come July when the nearby K. B. Hall apri-cot ranch begins offering its har-vest. The Summit makes an apri-cot milkshake that is quite possi-bly as close to nirvana as one can ever find. Whatever it is you want summer to be, it will be unful-filled unless you have a creamy, juicy, succulent and divine apri-cot milkshake at The Summit. Happy travels. F

V entura County residents like to party. This is never more evident than in the summer, when festival

season goes into full swing, and every weekend promises fun in the sun or under the stars. Beginning with what has grown into a formi-dable car show in a region that has no shortage of them, the Back to the Beach Kustom Rod Show offers the best of So Cal car and retro culture with tricked-out cars, great music and all things tiki. The show comes to Seaside Park/Ventura County Fairgrounds, 10 W. Harbor Blvd., on May 30. It will feature surf music, surf art and culture, tiki wares plus custom rods and motorcycles for the whole family to enjoy. The Dave Gleason Band

plus The Del Reys, Captain Jeffrey and the Chumbuckets will also be performing. For more informa-tion, go to www.primernationals.com/backtothebeach.

In between the season kickoff and the county fair, which ends the summer with a big bang, there are a variety of events to suit every taste and lifestyle. Besides what’s listed below, be sure to check out the calendars online at Ventura Harbor Village and Channel Islands Harbor, where every week-end there’s good live music, art and other attractions. If you’re into live theater, Ventura County has a number of excellent com-munity theater groups as well as one award-winning professional group: Rubicon Theatre Company.

Several plays and musicals will open over the summer. VCReporter

lists opening and ongoing theater productions every week in the Happenings section.

This summer welcomes some favorite annual events like the Salsa Festival and the Ojai Music Festival, and it will also usher in something completely different: The Johnny Cash Festival. Cash lived above Nye Road in Casitas Springs near Ojai in the early- to mid-1960s, and his daughter Rosanne Cash grew up in the pas-toral environs there, eventually graduating from St. Bonaventure High School in Ventura. Cash was active in the community and attended church on Ventura Avenue, but he also left a less than positive fingerprint on Ventura County when he set a forest fire in Fillmore.

Organizers of the inaugural

Johnny Cash Festival, which will be held at Seaside Park on Saturday, June 20, are hoping to raise money for kids whose par-ents are incarcerated, a cause that was dear to the Man in Black’s heart. Johnny Cash trib-ute acts from around Southern California will be on hand to perform favorites from the Cash songbook, and a car show will round out the day. The Cash Prophets, Big River, Cash’d Out and the Mighty Cash Cats will be performing. The Derby Darlins and a “One Piece at a Time” car show will also be featured.

Whether you’re into fun-nel cake or fireworks, poetry or Pontiacs, if you can’t find an outlet for your inner party animal this summer, then you need to take off your sunglasses. F

Make no excuses — go out and have fun at this summer’s latest and greatest events

The beauty of hiking is that you don’t need anything but feet (though a bottle of water is nice) in order to get going. But you do need to know where to go. The definitive guidebook is Day Hikes in Ventura County, California: 43 of the Best by Robert Stone, published by Day Hike Books, Inc. Sometimes it’s nice to share the trail, and a number of organizations can help you

do just that. The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy offers a variety of activities and events. For information call (310) 589-3200 or visit www.smmc.ca.gov. The Sierra Club’s Los Padres Chapter has two groups to serve Ventura County. North county residents can contact the Sespe Group at 488-7988 and south county residents can contact the Conejo Group at 495-6391. www.sierraclub.org. Bird watching enthusiasts can contact the Ventura Audubon Society at 642-1585 or visit www.venturaaudubon.org.
