Let us tell you all about the treats awaiting guests visiting the beautiful village of Obergurgl and the Hotel Edelweiss & Gurgl in the Ötztal Valley!

There are three good reasons why you are sure to find your perfect mountain holiday in Obergurgl…The village of Obergurgl is blessed with a perfect geographical and climatic location: to the north, visitors enter-

ing the valley will find picturesque rock formations, rushing mountain streams and waterfalls, and cows and horses roaming free along the winding hairpin bends; to the south, numerous glaciers, 21 towering 3,000 m

peaks and unique natural phenomena such as the blossoming Swiss pine forest provide a breathtaking backdrop.

The area seems to offer an endless range of activities for everyone: families with children, active pensioners, enthusiastic mountaineers and couples looking for a romantic break.

Guided walks five times a week suitable for all levels, from begin-ners to experienced walkers.

Enjoy nature on horseback with a locally-bred Haflinger horse.Fun and sport all in one – perfect for kids and adults alike!

A natural jewel and protected site of outstanding beauty: the Swiss pine forest in Obergurgl is just 20 minutes from the hotel.

Perfectly located in the centre of Obergurgl, directly next to the “Hohen-Mut” summer cable car.

A huge range of leisure activities in the heart of the Alps:archery, Nordic walking, hiking and much, much more!

From untouched nature to adrenaline adventureThe enormous range of activities on offer in Obergurgl means that

everyone will find what they are looking for, from relaxed walks to extreme mountaineering, from discovering the playful marmots native to the region

to visiting the site where Ötzi the Iceman – at over 5,000 years of age Europe’s oldest natural human mummy – was discovered. Those looking to get back to nature shouldn’t miss out on the region’s sparkling silver streams, lush fenlands, deep canyons, natural Alpine zoo and network of marked trails winding their way along mountain meadows, through

clearings, across streams and into the enchanting Swiss pine forest. Indeed, what better way to enjoy these natural highlights than from the back of a

traditional Haflinger horse bred and raised in the region? Finally, with raft-ing, canoeing, hut-to-hut hikes and thrilling mountain bike trails all close

by, adrenaline junkies certainly won’t be short of things to do!

For all those who love the mountains – walkers, hikers and Alpine mountaineers

There is quite simply no place better for walking, mountaineering and climbing than the Tyrol – and once you are in the Tyrol, why not come to

a region dominated by 21 towering 3000-metre peaks?

Nature-loving visitors to Obergurgl – the highest church village in Austria and gateway to the tallest of the Alpine peaks, the “Über-Alpen” – will find

unparalleled hiking in the region. Where else can you spend three whole weeks climbing mountains over 3,000 m in altitude without placing foot

on the same one twice? The Hotel Edelweiss & Gurgl was constructed by true mountain pioneers,

and there are few villages so closely associated with one family as Obergurgl is with the Scheiber family.

Almost a century ago, defying the incredibly tough conditions of the time, our family built the Ramolhaus mountain hut at 3,006 metres above sea level to serve as a place of refuge for walkers. Now, almost 100 years later, the spacious, newly-renovated Ramolhaus is still run by the Scheiber fam-ily and continues to offer hikers good traditional food and modern rooms

after a long day’s walking. The range of trails on offer in the surrounding mountains is almost unlim-ited: take a one- or two-day trek through the Königstal Valley and over the border into the northernmost Italian province of South Tyrol/Alto Adige,

or why not use the Ramolshaus as a starting point to discover other nearby peaks – or even follow in the footsteps of Ötzi the Iceman? The region offers everything that an enthusiastic walker could possibly wish for.

The ultimate holiday experience for the whole family! Our wealth of experience gathered over the past 120 years running a family business and listening to our numer-ous guests means that we know exactly what couples and families with children want and need from a holiday.

When it comes to walking and hiking, our younger guests in particular have their own wishes, demands and ideas – and Obergurgl is the perfect place to fulfil them!

Rather than the long, tiring treks up to wide mountain pastures that often prove so unpopular with children, a network of easily-accessible walking trails for the whole family means that everyone can enjoy a breathtaking

natural experience as soon as they step out of the door.

FAMILIES AND CHILDREN

16

Page 17: Summer Holidays in Tyrol

With swimming, the Ralley Kids’ Club, treasure hunts, archery and much more on offer, younger visitors to Obergurgl certainly won’t be short of

things to do!

Horse riding taster-courses, walks into the Swiss pine forest, paddling in the crystal-clear mountain streams, and visits to real working farms.

Something for everyone in the Kids’ Club: painting, face painting, handicrafts and even an obstacle course and free trial horse back riding.

Adults relax while the kids discover! The network of walking trails around Obergurgl means that while the adults can enjoy the stunning natural surroundings without working up too much of a sweat, children will have no time to be bored as they dis-cover everything Alpine nature has to offer.

Discover nature with the whole family!

Guests staying at the Hotel Edelweiss & Gurgl need only walk a few minutes from the hotel’s front door to experience Alpine nature at first

hand. Walkers heading to the Beilstein peak can choose either hiking trails snaking their way along mountain streams and over wooden bridges or a

series of safe paths with hand-holds hugging the rock walls.

Alternatively, discover one of the man-made paths leading into the Swiss pine forest, where you can enjoy the wonderful changing colours of the leaves from spring to late-autumn and follow the distinctive scent of sap and moss all the way to the cascading waterfalls. Indeed, the Swiss pine forest in this region is of such high quality that it has been declared a

natural heritage site.

The experience on the Beilstein peak is certainly worth the walk: a seem-ingly endless network of babbling streams criss-crossing the mountainside,

occasionally coming together to form small, crystal-clear pools.

It is not just the nature that makes this region so unique – even relaxing here is more beautiful! Three picturesque waterfalls close by are the perfect

place to stop for a rest and a snack while the kids discover the burrows created by the numerous marmots native to the region or head straight to the streams to dig out the shimmering clay with their bare hands – ideal

for making models!

A little further up lies the excavation site of one of the oldest archaeologi-cal finds in the Tyrol, a perfect vantage point to enjoy stunning views of

the surrounding ravines and glaciers and admire the many different shades of moss decorating the lush undergrowth. There really is so much to see!

Guests with our “Edelweiss & Gurgl Activity Card” and the “Ötztal Card” (see pages 18+19) can enjoy a whole host of additional attractions includ-ing family white-water rafting, hikes and cable car rides – everything you

need to guarantee an unforgettable holiday!

These days we often have so little time to spend with those we love – the members of our family. That’s why at the Hotel Edelweiss & Gurgl we offer you a very special holiday experience that allows you to spend real

quality time with the whole family.

and trained in a professional manner without physical abuse are the perfect horses for beginners and small children to learn how to ride.

Our team of grooms looks after the horses with the aim of maintaining and developing their friendly nature so that guests can enjoy their hacks

to the full.

The “Obergurgler Zirbenwald” forest, stretching from 1,950m to 2,100m above sea level and covering an area

of approximately 20 hectares, is home to traditional Swiss pine trees up to 300 years old.

Since Swiss pine trees of such age are extremely rare, this forest has been a protected heritage site since 1963. Back in the 1880s almost the entire tree population was destroyed as a forest fire swept through the region, with only old Swiss pine trees surviving. It is these ancient trees that, together with younger growth, form the two-generation forest of today. Indeed, if you take the time to have a closer look you will discover that the forest is teeming with

all sorts of other plants, animals and insects, hidden away in, on or under logs, stones, trees and in sunny clearings.
