Her work with the Center included gaining furtherunderstanding about best practices in the areas of diversityrecruitment and selection as tools for Human ResourcesProfessionals. With Dr. LisaSteelman and the Center staff,Anita was able to gain an understanding of the multipleperspectives required to increase the types of diversity inorganizations back in Finland. In exchange for a deeperunderstanding of the multicultural experiences thatorganizationsintheUnitedStatesencounter,Anitasharedherexpertise in the area of the expatriate and repatriationprocess. Her insight and enthusiasm for this area hasencouraged theCenter staff todevelopaproject in this areathatwillcontinue intheFallof2010. Welcome! By the time you read this, backpacksightingswillbebecomingmorenumerousandparkingspaceswill be growing more elusive around campus, officiallymarkingthestartofanewsemesteratFloridaTech.Andwitheach new fall semester, we welcome a new class of “first‐years”totheI/Ofamily. Iremembermyfirst‐yearexperienceof getting to know my incoming class as being a reallyenjoyableprocess.Havingthementorwebsiteasaninitialtoolfor communicating was very helpful for planning outingswhere we could all get to know each other better betweenclassesandstudying.Whilemostoftheclasswasalsotaskedwith familiarizing themselves to a new town aswell as theirpeers, IhadtheuniqueperspectiveofbeingthesolestudentwhoactuallygrewupinMelbourne.Studentsarrivingfrombigcities such as Chicago, (which is wheremy partner in crime,BenTryba, isaproudresidentof, afactyouwillundoubtedlyendupknowinguponfirstmeetinghim.BenactuallywroteagreatarticleonthestandardDowntownMelbournenight‐lifeinthelastissueofthePulseandIrecommenditforgettingagoodideaofwhatthatsceneisallabout)mayfindourhumbletown a bit small and easily consumed. As an unofficialambassador, I’ve been able to share some really neat spotsaroundtownthatarealittle“offthemap”withthenon‐localstudents. Trust me; it doesn’t take very long to get tired ofhanging around Main Street Pub. So in the event that youwouldliketomixitup, herearesomeselectspotstoeatandrelaxthathavemylocalstampofapproval.

Let’s start with places to eat. First off, let me statethat I have a bit of a taste for the finer things in life, so ifyou’relookingforacollege‐budgeteatinganddrinkingguide,Imust sadly inform you that this is not it. We all know howramen, beans, andricework‐solet’stalkrealfood. Now,witha few exceptions, these places aren’t going to leave youpennilessandinriskofhavingtowashdishestoworkoffthewaiter’s tip, but given how great the food is, I would beprepared to splurge. Mustard’s Last Stand (a favorite of 2ndyear Steve Young), The Sun Shoppe, and Longdoggers are allrestaurantswhereyoucangetawaywithspending10dollarsaperson.Mustard’sandtheSunShoppeareboth locatedon

the edge of the downtown‐Melbournearea off of New Haven Ave. Mustard’sLastStandhasbeentheresincethe80’sand serves the best gourmet hot dogsaround with names like “TheMeathead,”and“TheCowboy.”

AtTheSunShoppeyouwillfindwhatisprobablythebest coffee in town, if you’re into non‐chain coffee joints, and they also offer a variety of handmade soups andsandwiches. Generally, hip music and a laptop/group‐friendly vibe make it a great place to study as well.Longdoggers has more of a sports bar vibe, but with asurfing theme. This place has by far my favorite wings(teriyaki, wet), a laid‐back atmosphere, and the service isalways friendly. Longdoggers has several locations aroundBrevard, my favorite being the original on A1A beachside, justabitnorthofNewHaven. Now,forthoseofyoulookingfor some of the best of what Melbourne has to offer, IwouldsuggestMelo’s ItalianRistoranteandHaruSushiBar&Grilltogetstarted.Bothoftheseplacesareonehundredpercentdate‐worthyandwillleaveyourstomachsandtastebudsthankingyou. Melo’s isanamazing ItalianrestaurantlocatedonEauGallieDr.,beachside,that’sbeenaroundfortwentyyears.Theplaceseatsagoodamountofpeopleandallthefoodiscookedbyjusttheownerandhisson,whichispretty impressive. I cannot overly state how amazing thefood is there. Also, apparently TonyBennett ate thereandsang a cappella which also brings the place’s “coolness”factorupanotchtoo.

Now, everyone please raise your hand if you likesushi. Now with that hand, wipe your brow in reliefbecauseyoucanrestassuredknowingwherethebestsushiintownis.HaruSushiBarandGrille ishands‐downthebestsushi restaurant I’ve had the pleasure of eating at. Theyoffer so many sushi rolls that many of their servers haveworked there for years and still don’t have the sushi listmemorized. All of the sauces aremade from scratch andthe cleanliness behind the scenes is top notch (I workedthereshortlybeforestartingtheI/Oprogram).Theownerisoriginally from Korea, and they offer Korean as well asJapanese dishes made by a Hibachi chef, many with asomewhatAmericantwist.Asthefoodsectionwindsdownandweturntoliquidintake, letmementionthatHarualsohas the best beer on the planet, Ginga Kogen, an $8dollar/bottleJapanesewheatalethatiswortheverycent.

Welivebythemotto“workhard, becool,”andformany, analcoholicbeverageisanicewaytoblowoffsteamafteralongdayofwork.Ifdrinkingisn’tyourthing, thenyouprobablywon’tfindthenextsectionveryuseful…However,it can give you an idea of what some of the places inMelbourne are like, which may be helpful when you findyourself hanging out at with peers who do happen toindulge. Again, if youhaven’talready read it,Benwroteagreat article in the last issue of The Pulse (seehttp://cpla.fit.edu/io/fortheSpringissue)onthedowntownsceneandthebarsMainStreet,OfftheTraxx,FooBar,etc.,butI’mgoingtosharewithyousomeplacesIliketoenjoyasa local, that “out‐of‐townies” likeBenmaynothaveheardabout.

Dependingonhowmuchyou’vetalkedwithme, youmay or may not know that I am in love with the beach.Given that you’ll be residing in what many unfortunatepeople in Wisconsin and other snow‐blighted states wishwas their life for several months out of the year, I highlysuggestenjoyingitasmuchaspossible.Agoodfirststepforthisisenjoyingyourendofthedayrefreshmentistodosowithanoceanview, and this ispreciselywhatCrownPlazaoffers. Crown Plaza is a hotel located, you guessed it,beachside, (a fewmiles north of NewHaven, andjustsouthof Eau GallieBoulevard on A1A)with a huge ocean‐deck that has agorgeous view of theAtlantic. They haveseveral differentthemed nights withmusic like jazzand reggaeand theirocean‐deck isopenallday.Ihighlyrecommendthemargaritas!Benwroteaboutacool bar in Palm Bay called the Broken Barrel that offershundredsofcraftedandrarebeers.Viera, atownjustabitnorthofMelbourne, ishometoabarcalledWorldofBeer, which is their answer to Palm Bay/Melbourne’s BrokenBarrelTavern.ItispartofanoutdoorshoppingcentercalledTheAvenues, andit isdefinitelyabitnicerandnewerthantheBrokenBarrel, butyoudopaya luxury tax. Sometimesit’sworthittopayfortheupgrade.Theyhaveliterallyeverybeer you could think of, chocolate beer, blueberry beer,coffeebeer...yougettheidea.

If beer is a bit heavy for your taste, one of the

quickestwaystotradeyourdollarsforacocktailisprobablyat the martini bar Lexi, which is found in downtownMelbourne.Lexioffersanimpressivevarietyofmartinisandhave a happy hour that many of the now‐2nd years haveenjoyedonmorethanoneoccasion.Asidefromthehappyhour, the drinks do tend to be pricey, but then again, sometimesyoujustwanttopaytofeellikeyou’redrinkingin the bar of the starship Enterprise.Often Lexi has a live piano or flamencoguitarplayer(DJontheweekends)whichmakes the martinis that much moreenjoyable. In all honesty, downtownMelbourne will probably be the placethatyouendupspendingthemajorityofyour going‐out time. So in the case thatyou’re in downtown Melbourne andfeelinglikeyouneedabitofchangefromtheMainStreet‐>Traxx‐>Matt’s Casbah circuit (you’ll know it soon), Ibestow this last Melbourne gem to you: FirehouseRestaurant and Lounge. Firehouse is a small little bar andrestaurantownedby twovolunteer firefighter that canbefound across the street fromOff the Traxx. Firehouse is arestaurant by day, and at night they open the front roomand bar for cocktails. It offers a nice and cozy area withrelaxedatmosphereanditcanserveasanicebreakspottoget away from all the loud music and Jersey Shoreimpersonators.

Hopefully these select spots pairedwithwhat youhaveundoubtedlyalreadydiscoveredyourselveswill serveas a great starting point to getting to know the area ofMelbourne. We still haven’t tackled the beach and all thesportsactivitiesrelatedtooursurfandsun.Iencourageyouto email me or ask me in person any questions you mayhave about the area, like where to park at the beach forfree (Paradise and Melbourne Beaches :]), more detailsabout the locations I mentioned, or where to find theworld’s best tasting burrito! I look forward to getting toknowyouallandwishyouthebestofluckonyourstudiesinthisexcitingfirstsemester.[END]

IM BACK! I know youmissed me and, well, Imissedyoutoo.ThisisTHEBen Report and I am Ben.Wehave a lot to cover thistime around but not muchtime to do it (I got a datewith a Miss Anheiser inabout 20 minutes). First, Iwould like to thank all ofyouwho took time towriteand congratulateme on anamazing article that madethe The Pulse’s birthdayissue a great success (youbetternothavereadthatina Borat voice!!). Second, Iwould like to specifically

thankthoseofyouwhosentmepamphletsforalcoholism.Thatwasreallyniceofyou.Butdonotworry;thisissueoftheBenReportwillstillcontainstoriesthatinvolvecopiousamounts of “beveraging”, which is defined as the act ofconsuming a beverage (see, graduate school really doesmakeyousmarter).

Secondsemesterwasactuallyquitedifferentfromfirst semester. There were a lot more projects due andalmost all of them were due atthesametime…whichwasdoneonpurpose…byevilfaculty…()The idea is to get us ready forwhat I am about to go through:“Hell Semester” (dum dumdummmmmmm). But let’s notget ahead of ourselves. Secondsemester classes include Stats (again), PerformanceAppraisal, andTestandMeasures. LisaSteelman teachesthe hell out of Performance Appraisal and you actuallycreatesomeratingscales, which isprettycool. However, some of the fun is lostwhen you simultaneously have toworkon creating a 100 itemmultiple choice test for TestandMeasures(which involvesactuallycreating200 items, then rating them, and formatting them…I still havenightmaresabouttheformatting).

Butnevertheless, classesareclassesandIdonotwantto bore you with stories of sitting in rooms thatrandomlychangefromhottofreezing.Butyouknowwhatwasnotboringlastsemester?SIOP!

SIOPwasa freakin’blast! WedrovefromMelbourne,FLtoAtlanta,GAinClifford(TheBigRedWagon–my car) and thanks to thecool Spring weather, nothaving A/C was not so bad. There are a couple quirks about SIOPthat all of you alumni and seasoned students knowand all of you 1st years and incoming students willneed to know. Quirk #1 is about fashion. General

fashion etiquette goessomething like: formalbusiness attire, tobusiness casual, towhatever you feel likewearingsinceeveryone ishung‐over. Just kidding, but seriously, I’m not (Iwas rocking a pretty sick

salmoncoloredbuttondown…yea).Quirk #2 is about seminar attendance. You want tolook over the SIOP handbook and plan outwhat youwouldliketoattendeachdayandhavesomebackupsifyoufindoutthatthediscussionyouinitiallywantedto attend is just as interesting as a lecture on stampcollecting (and yes, I do mean to offend the stampcollectors out there). Quirk #3 is about drinking.Generaldrinkingetiquetteinvolvessippingonawhitewine spritzer while the faculty are around and onlythrowing back shooters once they have left you fortheir graduate school chums and a night ofdebaucheryof theirown. So after SIOPwe finished the spring semester offand headed straight into summer classes (yes, all of youincoming/newstudentswilltakesummerclasses).WorkMotivationwastheoneclassthatIbelieveallofthefirst yearstook. Pattaught itand Igot to say, itwas a reallygood course.Be preparedto have yourpresentationskills testedbecause eventhough youpresentinothercourses,Motivationistheonlyonewhereyour actual presentation skills are critiqued (by Pat ANDthe entire class). Giving out candy seems to help boostthat grade…but you did not hear that from me. Somestudents took a second summer class (yeah, what nerdsright??) that began around the same time as Motivationbutlastedaweekortwolonger(theclasswasConsulting–I did not take it, so all I know is that you learn aboutconsulting).

Summertime in Melbourne is bitter‐sweet. Youhave fantastic weather, you can hit up the beach almostevery day like Mr. CaseyCookdid, youcandoawholelot of day drinking, whicheveryone knows is the besttype of drinking, and finallyyoucan just takesome timetorelaxingeneralafteryourfirstyearofgraduateschool. However, every time youstep outside of your airconditioned house orapartment, you willinstantaneouslysweat. Iamnotkidding; it feels likeyouhitawallafteryoustepoveryourdoor’s threshold. Personally, I think Ididagood jobof mixing up beach and outdoor time with cool indoormovietime(Iloved“ToyStory3”).NowhereisalistofallofthefunthingsthattookplacesincethelasttimeIwrote(soyoucangetsomegoodideasforyourownfun,orjustsoyoucanlivevicariouslythroughme):• IgottopartywiththeFLTechCrewinanewcity. This
