In 1972, Dr. Helen
Glass was named
Director of the
School of Nursing at
the University of
Manitoba. During her
tenure she estab-
lished a graduate pro-
gram in nursing, and
was instrumental in
the creation of the
MCNHR (formerly
Manitoba Nursing
Research Institute).
MARK YOUR
CALENDARS:
2012 Researcher in
Residence during
Nurses’ week
(May 6,-12 2012)
The 2011 Dr. H. Glass Researcher-in-
Residence was Dr. Mary Canales, Associ-
ate Professor in the Department of Nursing
at the University of Wisconsin-Eau
Claire. Dr. Canales delivered several pres-
entations including “Translating Research
to Practice”, “Othering and How to En-
gage with the Other”, “Different Ways to
Use Qualitative Research; Old Applica-
tions with New Twists” and “Indigenous
Populations and Cancer; Compare and
Contrast Dialogue”
The 2011 event attracted and united
nurses from across the province and research
colleagues from many different disciplines.
The third annual MCNHR members meeting
was held in conjunction with the Dr. Canales
public lecture where we discussed how to en-
gage current and future members of the
MCNHR. A reception prior to the public lec-
ture provided a relaxing environment for net-
working with colleagues.
Dr. Glass’s support and participation was once
again received as one of highlights of the
event from attendees (from students who
were honored to meet Dr. Glass to current and
retired faculty and nurses who were able to
visit with Dr. Glass).
A big thank-you goes out to Chair of the Re-
searcher in Residence Committee, Dr. Diana
McMillan and committee members, Donna
Martin, Sue Hicks and Daniel Gagne. Thanks
also to MCNHR staff, especially Lisa Wolfe-
Ulrich for all her work in coordinating this
years’ event. Our gratitude and thanks are also
extended to Dr. Glass for creating the vision
and legacy for the Researcher in Residence
program to promote excellence in nursing re-
search in Manitoba.

junction with this event.
Dr. Nancy Edwards is a Full
Professor in the School of
Nursing, and the Department of
Epidemiology and Community
Medicine, University of Ot-
tawa; Director of the Commu-
nity Health Research Unit;
Principal Scientist, Institute of
Population Health; Senior Scientist, Élisa-
beth Bruyère Research Institute; and Aca-
demic Consultant, City of Ottawa (Public
Health Services). Dr. Edwards obtained her
undergraduate nursing degree from the Uni-
versity of Windsor and completed graduate
studies in epidemiology at McMaster Uni-
versity and McGill University. Dr. Edwards
held a CHSRF/CIHR Chair Award in Nurs-
ing (2000-2010) focused on “Multiple In-
terventions in Community Health Nursing
Care”. Dr. Edwards is also the Scientific
Director for the CIHR Institute of Popula-

Employment Status and
Preferred Employment of BN
Graduates
The MCNHR continues to survey graduating under-
graduate nursing students on their employment status
and preferred employment as they exit the four year
nursing program. Graduates are also asked to give
their perceptions about the employment opportunities
and challenges for graduating nursing students in
Manitoba. In addition, feedback on the nursing educa-
tion program is also gathered. The 2010 Undergradu-
ate Report is available on our website.

Province-wide New Nursing Graduates Survey
The proposal for MCNHR to coordinate the surveying of nursing graduates from nursing programs
in the province was approved from Manitoba Health as a one year pilot project. The MCNHR will be
surveying new nursing graduates (BNs only) 6 months after they graduate from the University of
Manitoba, Red River College, Brandon University, University College of the North and St. Boniface
College. Beginning in the spring, graduates from October 2011 will be surveyed.
Employers’ Survey In collaboration with the WRHA, RHAM,
and CRNM, we revised the process of ob-
taining feedback about new graduates from
employers. We trialed the use of focus
groups with employers as a new method of
obtaining this feedback. The final report
on “Nurse Managers’ Perspectives on the
Entry Level Competencies of New Nurs-
ing Graduates from the University of
Manitoba BN Program” has been com-
pleted and an executive summary of the
report will be posted online shortly.
The MCNHR Graduate Student Research Poster Competition provides a forum to showcase graduate
student research recently completed or in progress. This 2nd Annual Graduate Student Poster Com-
petition was held in conjunction with events of the 2011 Dr. Helen Glass Researcher-in-Residence,
Dr. Mary Canales. The poster competition was open to all current or recent (within the last year)
graduate students in the Faculty of Nursing or current graduate students in the PhD program in Ap-
plied Health Sciences, Interdisciplinary PhD, or PhD in Cancer Control with an advisor who is a
member of the Faculty of Nursing. The judges for this year’s competition were Bev Temple, Jo-Ann
Lapointe-McKenzie and Lindsey Hoogsteen.
