DEAR J-CAMP FAMILIES:

We are so pleased that you are considering J-Camp for your child this summer!

Our numerous camp programs provide an excellent opportunity for children ages 2 to 15 to make the most out of their summer vacation. J-Camp has been a consistent source of high-quality summer programming for many years, and this summer will be no exception.

You may have heard that the Jewish Alliance’s Dwares JCC will be undergoing an extensive renovation. We are updating the façade, main entrance, front lobby, social hall, and the back courtyard. We do not anticipate any disruptions to your child’s camp experience. The renovation will help us extend an extraordinary sense of welcome, accessibility, inclusivity, and security to our members and the greater community.

Another change this summer is that our camp structure will incorporate a Lower and Upper camp. Lower J-Camp consists of Camp K’Ton (ages 2-3) and Camp Yeladim (ages 3-5), while Upper J-Camp includes Camp Haverim (grades K-6) and Counselors-in-Training (CITs) (grades 7-10). This change will allow for a more synchronized approach for campers to connect with each other while feeling like they are part of something bigger. All J-Camp programs will feature weekly coordinated Judaic and secular themes, focusing on universal human values, which will become the focus for activities planned throughout the week. Our whole camp will utilize a Spirit Calendar that will also provide cohesiveness among the campers.

All J-Camp programs will continue to provide your child with a wide range of age-appropriate opportunities to help them discover their perfect niche. Our experienced and knowledgeable staff take great pride in creating a warm and caring environment that fosters self-confidence, teamwork, and respect. Activities range from outdoor play, swimming, art projects, pottery, gymnastics, drama, cooking, and more. We also incorporate a holistic wellness curriculum called Discover CATCH (Coordinated Approach To Children’s Health), which focuses on the importance of physical activity, health education, gardening, and healthy eating behaviors. As such, all campers will be served a healthy lunch and snacks on a daily basis.

J-Camp staff are certified in CPR and First Aid, and they strive to reach the highest standard of care possible. We offer excellent staff-to-camper ratios at all levels with an emphasis on health and safety. Try J-Camp once, and you’ll see that it is relevant at all stages of your child’s development. Come grow with us, and begin to create wonderful memories that will last a lifetime!

For more information about any of our J-Camp programs, curricula, and availability, we encourage you to reach us at the contact information listed below.

Sincerely,

Camp Haverim: grades K - 6

Our exciting Camp Haverim will not disappoint! Each week, campers will enjoy participating in a variety of activities focused around Judaic and secular themes. Campers are split into groups by age allowing their days to be filled with exciting age-appropriate activities and challenging opportunities to discover new interests, develop different skills, and explore their surroundings. There will also be times when all campers are together as a group to help build community. We will start the day outside on the field with a morning huddle to hear the day’s news and activities. Campers will also have the opportunity to gather together during snack, lunch, and special programs planned throughout the summer.

Weekly schedules allow children to rotate through a variety of activities, including specialties. There are electives each day encouraging campers to focus on specific interests. Campers will also have daily swim lessons and the opportunity to choose free-swim as one of their electives. We’ve also lined up exciting visitors who will conduct lessons and activities based on the weekly themes. These special guests include Valerie Tutson from Rhode Island Black Storytellers; Animal Expert Dave Marchetti; Keith Muslow, an award winning performer; and the Brown University Astronomers. In addition, campers will attend weekly field trips, and they will make challah every Friday for Shabbat.

The Counselor-in-Training program is a great opportunity for teens and is the first step to becoming a camp counselor. Being a CIT is one of the most enjoyable positions available for a young person, but it’s also hard work. It involves working with peers and dealing with children on a continual basis. CITs work directly with counselors and camp specialists running programs, creating activities, and learning a variety of teaching techniques. But the CIT program isn’t all hard work—participants still have the chance to join in fun activities like weekly field trips.

This summer, we are proud to introduce a two-week intensive training for all CITs. This new program will allow CITs to get a deeper understanding and appreciation of what it takes to be a camp counselor. CITs are given the chance to observe a group and work with a specialty counselor of their choice. They will then have the opportunity to talk with the CIT trainer to discuss their observations. Once the training has been completed, they will help counselors with planning and implementing programs. Any CIT who completes the first session (Weeks 1 and 2) will get an additional free period if they choose to continue to be a CIT anytime during Weeks 3 through 8. During this period CITs will be able to participate in activities just for them including Spikeball, ping pong, or sports. Any CIT who has not gone through the two-week training must do the training when they sign up.

At the end of each session, CITs will receive a certificate of accomplishment as they show marked growth in their teaching and leadership skills. CITs that earn four certificates will be guaranteed an interview for a position as a Junior Counselor in J-Camp when they turn 16. Not all certificates have to be collected in a one year period.

Counselor-In-Training (CITs):

Not a member of the Dwares JCC? Not a problem. Non-members can earn free passes to try the Teen Lounge.

*PLEASE NOTE: Teen Lounge passes can only be earned during Sessions 1-4 (weeks 1 through 8). This is not eligible for Session 5 (week 9).

DISCOUNTS*Early Bird Discount: Register and pay in full by April 29, 2016, and save $10/week on all camps! Payment plans that provide payment in full by June 10, 2016 will also be considered paid-in-full for the Early Bird Discount if set up and approved by April 29, 2016.

Sibling Discount: Sibling Discount applies only when both siblings are registered during the same week(s). Sibling Discount is 10% off and applies to the lowest-priced camp each applicable week.

Exclusions: Discounts do not apply to Early Arrival, Extended Day, or Week 9 Travel Camp.

SUMMER J-CAMP 2016 POLICIES AND PROCEDURESRegistration: Registration is complete when all forms are returned to the Member Services Office and full payment has been made. Registrations will not be accepted unless the registrant’s Dwares JCC membership account is in good standing (no past due balances). Campers must register for the full camp session as listed, one or two weeks at a time. Once your child’s registration has been processed, you will receive forms that must be filled out PRIOR to your child beginning camp. These forms are mandatory, and your child will not be permitted to attend camp if they have not been completed. Forms will not be accepted on the first day your camper attends J-Camp; all forms MUST be handed in the Thursday before your camper’s first day.

Registration Deadline: Campers should be registered by 4:00pm on the Wednesday before the camp week starts. Families who choose to register after this deadline will be charged the following late fees:

• $25 if registration is received by 5:00pm on the Thursday prior to the start of camp.• $50 if registration is received by 12:00pm on the Friday prior to the start of camp.

Registration for camp closes at 12:00pm on the Friday prior to the camp week. Verbal registrations and/or changes will not be processed.

Registration Fee: A one-time, non-refundable family registration fee is required for each family registered (Fee: $60 | Members: $35). Registrations, including those for financial aid applicants, will not be accepted without payment of the fee.

Member Rates: To receive member rates, the camper must be on a current member account with no past due balances and remain in effect through the end of the registered camp period. Those with summer memberships and full-time student memberships are eligible for member rates.

Financial Aid: Scholarships are available on a limited basis for those in need of financial assistance and are awarded at the sole discretion of the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island. The scholarship application must be submitted online through FACTS Grant & Aid Assessment (factstuitionaid.com) when the camper’s registration and registration fee are submitted. All requests will be considered on a funds-available basis. J-Camp scholarships are available to Dwares JCC members only. Contact the Member Services Office for more information and forms. J-Camp accepts DHS assistance for full-day Camp Yeladim, Camp K’Ton, and Camp Haverim. Additional payment may be required for extended care.

Refunds: If there is need to cancel a camper’s processed registration, tuition less the family registration fee and $75 per camp week will be refunded only if the cancellation is made by June 6, 2016. No credits or refunds of any kind will be made for any cancellations or changes made by the registrant for any reason after June 6. The Dwares JCC reserves the right to cancel any program due to insufficient enrollment. Registrants will be notified of any cancellation the Wednesday before the camp week begins. If the Dwares JCC cancels a camp week, a credit for the camp will be put on the camper’s Dwares JCC account to use towards future Dwares JCC programming.

J-Camp T-shirts: Each registered camper will receive one J-Camp T-shirt. Campers must wear camp shirts on field trip days. The cost of the T-shirt is included in the registration fee. Additional J-Camp T-shirts are available to purchase for $10 each.

*Discounts may not be combined.

J-CAMP POLICIES & PROCEDURES (continued)

Communication: All families will receive additional information upon receipt of the registration form. Completed emergency, health history, and other forms must be returned in order to complete camper’s registration. You will receive an email on the Thursday before your week at J-Camp, with a briefing of what to expect. All communications, except emergencies, will be via e-mail. If you prefer an alternative means of communication, please be sure to notify us.

Jewish/Israeli Programing: The Dwares JCC is a Jewish institution; therefore, throughout the summer, we will do programing focused on Israel. While we recognize that not all children attending J-Camp are Jewish, programing will focus on Jewish values that are universal and everyone can appreciate. Some values will include diversity in the world, community, acts of loving kindness, and guarding the earth. All of our campers will use these values in their activities.

The Jewish Alliance is very proud to host a Shaliach (Israeli Emissary who acts as a cultural bridge between Israel and the United States) at J-Camp. We believe that it is an important goal for both our campers and staff to learn and identify with Judaism and the State of Israel. As we continue to create a connection between our local community and the Jewish community in Israel, we find the contribution of the Shaliach to be an invaluable step on the way to achieving that goal. The Shaliach brings many prepared activities to incorporate into the overall camp program. By simply being at camp and integrating into our community, we have the unique opportunity to learn about Israel and its culture, while we teach him/her about our own culture. The Shaliach participates in a special volunteer program through the Jewish Agency for Israel and completes a thorough background check and training. If you are interested in hosting our Shaliach during his/her camp season for two to three weeks by volunteering your home, contact Seth Finkle at [email protected] or 401.421.4111 ext. 146.

Swim: Campers enjoy swim at designated times. Swim lessons are taught and monitored by American-Red-Cross-certified lifeguards. Camp counselors will also be present during all swim periods. Camp K’Ton and Yeladim will have swim lessons on either Thursday or Friday. Campers in Camp Haverim will have swim lessons on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, and they may sign up for free-swim as an elective. Towels will be provided.

Field Trips: Camp Haverim goes on a field trip every Thursday. Camp Yeladim and Camp K’Ton may also plan two or three field trips throughout the summer. Parental permission is required and advance notice of upcoming field trips will be given.

Food Policy: A Kosher lunch and two snacks will be served to all campers daily. All lunches will be be nut-free and dairy/vegetarian. Upper Camp is not a completely nut-free environment, however we have nut-free snacks available. All snacks in Lower Camp will be nut-free. Please let us know if your child has any food allergies.

Medication: All medication must be submitted to your child’s camp director with a “Permission to Dispense Medication” form. Campers will not be permitted to carry their own medication. It will be administered by a J-Camp director or the nurse, and a record of treatment will be kept. This includes over-the-counter and prescription medication for all minors, including volunteers and CITs.

Dwares JCC programs are funded, in part, by dollars raised through the Jewish Alliance Annual Campaign. The Alliance is proud to provide services to enhance the education, heritage, and social commitment in our local and global Jewish community.

For more information about the Annual Campaign, contact Michele Gallagher at 401.421.4111 ext. 165 or [email protected].
