Summer: June, July and August

The school end at 10/6 and start 25/8.

July is the main Holiday month in Sweden. As many people as possible try

to take their holiday at that time.

During the summer is sun and bath the most important for many children.

In Boden we have a big camping with outdoor bath and also an Adventure bath.

Some kilometres from town is Aldersjön. Many people take their

bikes to go there for a swim.

Many Swedes go fishing a lot in the summer.

Summer cottages and Wagons are also popular during the holiday.

At around the 20th of June ít´s Midsummer Eve. It’s one of the shortest

nights in northern Sweden. The sun sets for about one hour in Boden,

between 24.00 – 01.00. It’s a magic night!

About 70 kilometres up north from Boden the sun never sets for one and a half month!

We welcome the summer; celebrate the sun and the season of fertility.

Many Swedes begin their summer holiday after midsummer.

At many places they raise a Maypole, to dance around. The maypole can be 2-3 meters high or even higher.

To begin with, many kids and adults go out in the forests and on the fields to pick flowers and leaves from birch to make the maypole. Then when it’s ready we dance around it.

Songs that are sung are: Små grodorna http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSfqQDjIuxo&feature=related

Räven raskar, Prästens lilla kråka http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdsiYltO0Qo&feature=related and Jungfru skär for example.

Food on Midsummer Eve

The dinner on Midsummer Eve is often very traditional: pickled herring, boiled new potatoes then followed by some grilled dishes and for dessert we almost always have strawberry cake with whipped cream.

Almost every part of Sweden has its own folk- costume. But they are rarely worn except at Midsummer.

This is one of the dresses that are worn in Boden. There are different colours on the skirt and on the apron.

At last, on their way home from the midsummerfestivity the younger

women (unmarried) are supposed to pick seven different species of

flowers to place under their pillow. And to them, in their dreams, at night, their future husbands will

appear.
