Montour’s Point by Cory Stutes
To study history is to constantly discover. Even local history, which you might think would be limited, is full of fresh discoveries and exciting new information. I stumbled upon one of these new (to me) discoveries recently. While doing research for a friend about the Bowling Green, a region east of Newark, I came across something I had never heard of: Montour’s Point.
Montour’s Point refers to both a geographical feature and a subsequent mansion built on the spot, located east of Newark on Marne Road. Geographically, it is a high point of land jutting out from the bottom near Bowling Green Run and the Licking River. The
prominent home marking its location was built on the tip of Montour’s Point by the Montgomery family in approximately 1851, and was later occupied by the Wehrle family. The home, a stunning mansion with a Greek-revival portico, still adorns the neighborhood just west of Marne and showcases a beautifully maintained garden. While the Wehrles lived there, it was famous for its greenhouse that was home to many beautiful exotic plants.
Montour’s Point was named for Andrew Montour, the son of a Seneca chief named Carondawanna and a woman of French-Canadian and native ancestry known as Madame Montour. Andrew served as a guide and translator to many explorers and emissaries, most notably assisting George Washington during the French and Indian War. Montour is said to have passed through the area of Montour’s Point east of Newark in 1751 when he joined Christopher Gist at that location. Why it now bears his name, though, is unknown.
The first mention of any settlement at Montour’s Point appears to have been in the form of a trading post established by a man named Judge Elliott, or John Elliott. Elliott traded furs and set up shop in a wigwam or some other sort of structure. A nearby Shawnee camp, known to us only as John Elliott’s Wife’s Town, provided him with customers with whom to trade his furs. Its location on a main path between Wakatomika, near Dresden, and Raccoontown, near Johnstown, made it especially worthwhile. Elliott is said to have been warned one nightfall by a young Shawnee woman that an attack was imminent, prompting Elliott to pack up his goods and flee on horseback. We don’t exactly know when John Elliott is supposed to have lived at, and then fled from, Montour’s Point. We can, however, speculate that the Shawnee camp must have been established between 1751-1773, since it is not mentioned in Christopher Gist’s journal, but is documented in the journal of Chaplain David Jones, who came through in 1773. By 1786, when Billy Dragoo is said to have passed through the area, both Elliott and the Shawnee camp were nowhere to be found.
As time marched on and the area that would become known as the Bowling Green saw the establishment of farms, towns, businesses, and finally Ohio Route 16, Montour’s Point became a forgotten part of our county’s history. It’s just one of many historically significant places throughout the Land of Legend waiting to be rediscovered.
