This month is Vacation Bible School! This year’s VBS is set in the medieval world, with forests and castles, dragons and trolls! We are calling it “The Call: Songs for the Journey.” Kids will learn how God has created each one of us unique, and that God has a plan for each one of our lives, and the amazing adventure set before us. We will be learning about the Psalms - God’s songbook given as a gift for us in all of life’s seasons. We will look at psalms of praise, trust, lament, wisdom and thanksgiving as we follow the adventures of David’s early life. We are looking forward to this as a time to share the gift of God’s word with young people, and also the opportunity for our church family to gather together and serve! Please mark your calendars and plan to be a part of it, whether as a volunteer or prayer partner! Pastor Phil Quinn Director of Children, Youth and Young Adult Ministries

Hope and Healing Over the next few months, Pastor Phil and I hope to share some information that we hope

you will find helpful as we try to better care for each other as Christ’s Church. We have many

among us who are hurting, many who are grappling not only with recent events in our own

congregation, but with family issues, health issues, life transitions, etc. on a more personal

level. Our prayer is that as followers of Jesus Christ, we love well, pray fervently and trust that

God will redeem our story in his time - his perfect time.

The following information is taken from a workshop that Pastor Phil and I attended at Pine

Rest last month. We hope you will find it helpful:

Becoming an Active Listener

Listening seems like it should be an easy thing to do because we do it all the time. What we

don’t often realize is that we tend to hear people, but not actually listen to them. Hopefully,

you will enable the people around you to feel more heard and understood, and in turn, you

too will feel more heard and understood by those around you.

Active Listening Skills

1. Paraphrase: Once the other person is finished expressing a thought, paraphrase what he

or she said to make sure you understand and to show that you are paying attention.

(“What I hear you saying…”; “If I understand you right…”.)

2. Ask questions. Avoid jumping to conclusions about what the other person means. Instead,

ask questions to clarify his or her meaning. (When you say ____, what do you mean?)

3. Express empathy. If the other person voices negative feelings, strive to validate these

feelings rather than questioning or defending against them. For example, if a person

expresses frustration, regardless of whether you think that feeling is justified, try to consider

why that person might feel that way.

4. Use engaged body language. Show that you are interested in what the other person is

saying by making eye contact, nodding, facing the other person and maintaining an

open and relaxed body posture. Avoid distractions. Avoid checking your phone. Be

mindful of your facial expressions.

5. Avoid judgment. Your goal is to understand the other person’s perspective and accept it

for what it is, even if you disagree with it. Try not to interrupt with counter-arguments or

mentally prepare a rebuttal while the other person is speaking.

6. Silence. Silence often makes us feel uncomfortable but it can be a powerful tool to

create space for sharing and listening. Whether it is a long pause or a period of silence

while the person gathers their thoughts, leave time that doesn’t need to be filled with

unnecessary talking. Silence can feel honoring to the person sharing.

7. Avoid giving advice. Problem-solving is likely to be more effective after both

conversation partners understand one another’s perspective and feel heard. Moving

too quickly into advice-giving causes the listener to focus on “fixing” instead of “hearing”.

8. Take turns. Wait until the other person has a chance to speak and ask if its ok to share

your perspective.

NEWS FROM PASTOR PHIL QUINN Middle School Campus Life This fall, we have the honor of hosting Campus Life - an after school program for Middle school students. The program ran at Jefferson School for the last few years. This year, with East transitioning to be the consolidated middle school, we get to step up as the neighborhood church! We are excited to partner with this great organization as we make an impact on kids in this community. Campus Life is a positive place where students can go to have fun with friends, talk about relevant issues and be heard without judgment. We connect godly, caring adults with local students so that they can have positive mentor who points them to Christ. Through mentorship and also our weekly meeting, called club, we address issues students face while relating them to basic Christian principles. Students are challenged to make good decisions and lead in positive ways in their school. In addition to weekly club meetings, CL offers trips, small groups and other activities. Campus Life is a program of Youth For Christ, a non-profit organization that has been active throughout the United States for over 65 years. Contact Jami Wolters if you are interested in learning more at [email protected].
