SUMMER - 2017

We are thrilled to say that we reached our CaregiverRx

Matching Gift Campaign goal of $25,000 and with a week to

spare! Every dollar raised will be matched by Ground Effects

Ltd. bringing the grand total to $50,000 for local programs,

support and services for people living with dementia in our

community.

The CaregiverRx Matching Gift Campaign officially launched

on April 4, National Caregiver Day. A Caregiver Spa day was

held at our Walkerville location to kick off the campaign.

Staff expected Ground Effects CEO Jim Scott, to announce a

commitment of $15,000 to the 3-month campaign that day.

Scott had other plans, and surprised ASWE with a

commitment of $25,000, if donors could raise the same

amount by June 30.

A donation of $2,000 from Unifor Local 2458 officially

pushed the total across the finish line. We are grateful to

the labour community for helping us to successfully close

out the campaign. Thank you to all the generous individuals

who made a donation or held an event to contribute to the

Ontario Achieves a Fully-Funded Dementia Strategy!

On Thursday, April 27th, 2017, Ontario Minister of

Finance, Charles Sousa, introduced the 2017 Ontario

Budget, A Stronger, Healthier Ontario. The

announcement included $100 million over three years for

the implementation of an Ontario dementia strategy!

This is in addition to the $20 million investment for

improving respite care for unpaid care partners that was

announced earlier in the week on Tuesday, April 25th.

This is a major win for the over 220,000 Ontarians and their

families who have been impacted by dementia!

The Alzheimer Society of Ontario commends Premier

Wynne, Minister Sousa and Minister Hoskins for making

dementia a priority in Ontario and investing to enhance

care and support for people living with dementia and those

who care for them.

Most importantly, thank you to all of our Champions,

partners and allies who are out there every day improving

the lives of Ontarians living with dementia and their

families, and without whom a fully-funded dementia

strategy in Ontario may not have been realized.

Stay tuned for more news and updates on the Ontario

Dementia Strategy and what that means for local

programs and services.

This autumn the Alzheimer Society will mark

World Alzheimer’s Day, Thursday, September

21st, with our first annual World Alzheimer’s

Day Breakfast celebration, to be held at the

Windsor Club. That morning the Board of

Directors, staff, volunteers and friends of the

Society will honour longtime Society friend and

supporter, Mr. Jack Ramieri and his Battle of the

Brains Committee by presenting the Generosity

of Spirit Award. Mr. Ramieri and his team of

dedicated volunteers have hosted the wildly

successful Battle of the Brains trivia event every January since 2011 to coincide with

Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. This event has grown steadily over its six year history, selling

out months in advance and reaching a record number of 900 attendees earlier this year!

The Generosity of Spirit Award was established in 2011 to recognize philanthropic leadership

in advancing our cause in Windsor and Essex County. Mr. Ramieri and his team have worked

diligently year after year to create the largest live quiz fundraiser in Essex County and the

second largest in North America, combining philanthropy and fun and increasing awareness

all at the same time. This trivia event encourages brain health by keeping our minds active,

something that we put into practice every day with the clients we serve.

We express our continued gratitude to Mr. Ramieri and his team for the over $55,000 raised

thus far and their continued commitment to supporting local programs and services for those

impacted by dementia.

We would be delighted if you could join us at our World Alzheimer’s Day Breakfast.

Tickets may be purchased for $35 each or $225 for a table of 7. Please contact Peggy Winch

at 519-974-2220 x 225 to reserve your tickets.

A Stitch of Life

Donated by the Noble Family, in memory of Mrs. Janet Noble,

A Stitch of Life, three samples of Mrs. Noble’s needlepoint are

now hanging in our main hallway.

Mrs. Noble belonged to an active group of needlepoint artists

called the Gibson Gallery Girls. This group of women met at

the Gibson Gallery in Amherstburg to socialize and share their

love of needlepoint. After she received a diagnosis of

dementia, the group encouraged Janet to continue attending

the gallery and participate as she was able. As her disease

progressed, group members would modify patterns for Janet

and help thread the needle if needed, allowing her to continue

an activity that brought her much joy.

We encourage people with dementia to continue doing

activities they love if they are able. Activities such as

needlepoint encourage brain health overall well-being.

Modifying activities as a person’s abilities change also

allows them to find enjoyment and fulfillment, while

encouraging independence and highlighting strengths and

talents.

We thank Mr. Tom Noble and the Noble family for

allowing us to share these works or art.
