st. mary’s academy
We believe in ourselves. We believe in changing the world. We believe in pushing
the boundaries—in the adventure, in having fun and finding joy in everything we
do. We believe in the values of our Catholic founders, the Sisters of the Holy Names
of Jesus and Mary. We believe in social justice. We believe in that undefinable
something so much larger than ourselves, the tiny voice, the bolt of lightning. We
believe in brilliance. We believe in becoming. We believe in global citizenship and
stewardship. We believe in nurturing our minds, our bodies and our spirits. We
believe in taking risks. We believe in the artist, the thinker, the dancer, the coder,
the athlete, the servant, the leader—especially the leader.
We believe young women are powerful.
Statement of Non-Discrimination
St. Mary’s Academy admits students of any race, color, nationality or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, nationality or ethnic origin in its administration or policies.
We believe.

Adventures Without Limits Summer 2017
Saturday Academy Summer 2017
Adventures Without Limits is a non-profit outdoor adventure program based in Forest
Grove, Oregon. Since 1995, AWL has offered adventure-based activities including sea
kayaking, cross country skiing, rafting, inflatable kayaking, snow-shoeing, snow camping,
canoeing, caving, backpacking, team building and ropes courses, indoor and outdoor rock
climbing, and recumbent biking.
AWL’s mission is to empower people of all ability levels through inclusive outdoor
recreation and educational experiences. They provide participants an opportunity to
get outdoors and experience new activities that will allow them to gain skills, increase
their self-confidence, and increase their ability to work with their peers in a new and
challenging environment.
Saturday Academy strives to engage all motivated young people, including those from
under-represented communities, in hands-on, in-depth learning by connecting them to
community experts as educators and mentors. Our vision is that all interested, pre-college
students in our region will have the opportunity to interact with community experts and
experience professional environments in ways that assist them in developing intellectually
and preparing for rewarding careers.
Saturday Academy’s innovative programs are open to all students in grades 2 through 12.
We value all learning, and offer experiences in many disciplines. We emphasize science,
technology, engineering and math (STEM), because these fields are critical for children’s
careers and their fast pace of change is difficult to address in traditional school settings.
Saturday Academy was founded in 1983, and became an independent 501c3 nonprofit
in 2006. Saturday Academy has provided instruction to more than 170,000 students
throughout Oregon and SW Washington.

AWL: Kayaking | July 17-21 | Mon-Thurs 11:30am-4:00pm | Fri 8:30am-4:00pm | $300
Exploration of Yoga and Mindfulness | July 17-20 | Mon-Thurs 8:30am-11:30am | $150
The Power and Magic of Photography | July 17-20 | Mon-Thurs 8:30am-11:30am | $150
Learn one of the greatest outdoor activities in the Northwest! Start your week learning about water safety, boats, equipment and the basics of paddling and kayaking. You will become more confident on the water as you spend time padding on the Willamette River and learning rescue techniques. Mid-week you will head out to the Tualatin River where you will observe wildlife, like wood ducks and hooded mergansers, and practice your paddling skills. End your week with a full day of kayaking at one of AWL’s favorite spots, Sauvie Island, playing boat games and relaxing on the water!
This week long camp will guide students in practices designed to become more present, calm their minds, and find acceptance. By incorporating a variety of yoga styles and philosophy, mindfulness, games and some creative arts and crafts, we will learn to look inward and focus on acceptance of ourselves and others. We’ll work toward responding instead of reacting and bringing our best self forward. Most importantly, we will nurture one another and have fun!
Bring your digital camera, iPhone or iPad and journey through the power and magic of photography. We will explore its abilities to freeze time, tell a story, and record life’s fleeting and beautiful moments. During the course, we will look closely and use our imaginations to understand key ideas in photography such as light, gesture, viewpoint, and composition. Through exercises in portrait, still life, landscape and street photography, we will discover the wonder all around us when viewed through a camera lens. We will explore Portland with a city walking adventure and take a trip to the Portland Art Museum to view the work of historical and contemporary photographers. To conclude each student will choose their favorite photograph from the week to include in a class portfolio. Copies will be printed and each student will make a simple book structure to house their copy of the class portfolio.
