This summer we’re exploring what lies Beneath the Surface for our Teen Reading Challenge. Any student in grades 6-12 may participate. Earn points for a variety of activities that you complete this summer. After earning fifteen points, your reading challenge will be complete and you will have earned:

June 3rd, 6:30-7:30pm Underground Railroad
Stephen Brown demonstrates the influences of slavery on Abraham Lincoln’s early years in Kentucky and explores the Underground Railroad during this multimedia presentation.
June 6th, 6:30-7:30pm Hypnotist Show
Comedy Hypnotist Darshwood the Conjurer will be practicing his magic for adults & teens.
June 10th, 6-8pm Composting with the Ex-perts: Worms!
Get your hands dirty and learn about soil health. Start your own worm farm to help keep your garden healthy! Registration required for this event.
June 15th, 11-noon Home Brewing Beer
Expert Jim Peterson will be discussing how to brew your own beer at home! (We’ll have local cheese available for tasting, but no beer tasting at the Library)
June 17th, 6:30-7:30pm Wildflower Myths & Realities
How do plants affect us and how do we affect them? Dr. Thomas G. Barnes explores this and more as he discusses Kentucky Wildflowers.

July 8th, 6:30-7:30pm Housing the Dead
Jonathan Jeffrey presents pictures and research on the unique Kentucky practice of honoring the dead by building Grave Houses. Come learn more about this cultural tradition!
July 15th, 6-8pm Eco-Graffiti
Come to the library and paint… with moss! Create works of art using natural, living materials. Registration is required for this event.
July 23rd, 6:30-7:30pm Groundbreaking Trivia
Show off your knowledge of groundbreaking events and discoveries!
Participate in something momentous this summer at the Library and join us for some Groundbreaking Reads! Register for the Adult SRP at any Library and earn chances to win prizes with every book you read, every event you attend, and every weekly word challenge you complete.

Nelstone Carvers
Come learn about stone carving & help create a sculpture for the Library! Sessions throughout the day; registration required.

Animal Tales Meet animals that you will “dig”! Audience participation & hands on volunteering.

Cut out & fill in registration card . Bring to any Oldham Library between June 1st– July 20th to register for the summer reading program! Registration cards are available at Library.
The Summer Reading Program is open to all children from age 3 to age 12. There is a Wee Readers program for those aged 2 and under.
Sign-up anytime beginning June 1st at the Oldham County Library branch of your choice: completed reading logs must be turned into the library where you signed up.
Track your reading time. Once you have completed the summer reading program, you can enter a drawing to win prizes. Children 18 & under will have a chance to win $1000 towards college for reading this summer!
Earn a pass to the pool party at the Oldham County Aquatic Center when you have completed
the summer reading program!
