SUMMER SALE WITH A PROVENANCEMONDAY, 29TH JULY 2013

Over 50 years worth of acquisitions, including furniture,

paintings, silver and Japanese screens from Holcombe

House, Painswick, Gloucestershire, until recently the home of

a collector and her family, are to be offered for sale in

Chorley's next sale on Monday, 29th July 2013.

Highlights from the collection include fine furniture, such as

Lot 78, a pair of George lll mahogany marble-topped side

tables: these are stylish and would make a fantastic

statement in the hall of a country house, estimate 6,000-

8,000. Lot 108, a George III three-pillar dining table estimate

4,000-6,000 has good colour and patination and would fit

perfectly into a grand dining room.

Among a good selection of American silver, Lot 340 stands

out: this Tiffany & Co water jug is decorated with bands of

stylised waves and carries an estimate of 400-600.

Holcombe House is predominately a typical 16th /17th

Century gabled Cotswold stone manor house with stone slate

roof and a very fine tithe barn. It was recorded by local artist

Charles March Gere (1869-1957) in a lovely watercolour

(illustrated here by kind permission of Cheltenham Museum

and Art Gallery). The house was enlarged and restored for a

    previous owner of the house, Lady Plymouth, by Detmar Blow;

his extension seen to the right of the house is in the Cotswold

Arts and Crafts style and blends in perfectly with the earlier

    original.

Also included in the sale are a number of items from a

deceased estate. Raymond de Seyssel Hall was the only son

of architect Herbert Austen Hall and Countess Clara Seyssel.

Through his mothers parents, Edgar Seyssel and AdelheidWartensleben, he was descended from the noble European

families of Seyssel DAix and Wartensleben. The Seyssel dAix

family were originally from Savoy but moved to Bavaria at the

    beginning of the 18th Century.

Lot 265 is a beautiful portrait of C von Mannlich by Josef Karl

Steiler; the sitter is pictured half length wearing a black dress

with red velvet ribbons and gazing wistfully into the distance -

estimated at 2,000-3,000 it is just one of an interesting

    group of portraits.

    Also from the estate are two large tapestries, Lot 188;

depicting medieval scenes, these date from the early 20th

Century and are hugely decorative, estimate 1,200-1,800.

Among a good selection of German silver, Lot 362 stands

out: this is a bread bowl with scroll handles by Vollgold &

Sohn and which bears the armorial of the Counts of

    Wartensleben, estimate 300-400.

In a break with the usual schedule, the sale will be held on a

Monday (Monday 29th July) with viewing on Friday 26th July

from 9am-5pm and weekend viewing on Saturday 27 and

    Sunday 28 July from 10am-4pm.
