Carefully assess the level of commitment that is appropriate for your child and family prior to registration and tryouts. In particular, we want all players and parents to
understand the commitments of competitive soccer before placement on a team, and we want to be fair to all players and only fill roster spots with players who are
committed.

PLAYER COMMITMENT EXPECTATIONS FOR EDINA SOCCER CLUB PLAYERS
The Edina Soccer Club (“ESC”), in accordance with the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (“MYSA”) and Twin Cities Soccer
League (“TCSL”), strives to provide a competitive soccer program for all levels of teams within the Club. Players that possess
fundamental skills, athletic ability and have a strong desire to be challenged to excel and develop to their full potential are
encouraged to try out for a Club team.
ESC considers “commitment” to cover:
Participation – this is a player’s commitment to the time, energy and focus required for a healthy team environment and
individual experience.
Financial – this is a family’s commitment to the fees/costs/expenses involved in playing for a competitive team sport.
Placement on a team requires commitment on the part of both the player and his/her family. It is the commitment of time and
effort that most clearly differentiates a competitive soccer player from a “house league” player.
Soccer is a team sport and relies on each member of the team. Absences significantly impact and disrupt team development.
Players are expected to attend all practices, games, tournaments and team events. During the Fall and Summer League Season, all
players need to view soccer as their first sport priority. Participation in the State tournaments is expected for all U11-U18 teams.
Players and their families should carefully coordinate their other activities such as summer camps, religious services and functions,
weekend trips, and vacation and holiday schedules to fulfill their commitment.
Excused absences include required academic and religious functions, illness or injury. Each coach has his/her own rules and
policies regarding absences that should be respected by the player and parents. Unexcused absences can result in decreased
playing time and, if excessive, possible dismissal from the team.
Premier (U14-U18) and Classic 1 (“C1”) (U11-U18) teams are considered by MYSA (USYS) and the Club to be top level teams -
the most competitive and highest level teams in their respective age groups. Other teams may be considered to be top level teams
by ESC, depending on the age group. Players selected to these teams must understand that there are enhanced levels of
commitment and costs.
National & Regional level teams (U11-U18) are considered by TCSL (US Club Soccer) and the Club to be top level teams - the
most competitive and highest level teams in their respective age groups. Other teams may be considered to be top level teams by
ESC, depending on the age group. Players selected to these teams must understand that there are enhanced levels of commitment
and costs.
Commitment to Unity: Edina Soccer Club expects that parents and players act in the best interest of Edina Soccer Club. If a
player or family member acts collectively with another Club member or a member of another Club to recruit a player, or group of
players, away from ESC to another Club, it is considered a violation of League rules and will be dealt with accordingly.
Dropping from a roster at any time is a problem for ESC players and teams. A player who drops from a team after indicating a
commitment to that team, can and does impact the remaining players on that team significantly. Sometimes these drops impact
entire age groups. Please consider your teammates and the families involved prior to making a decision to drop.
IMPORTANT: Any player who cannot satisfy the participation requirements of the top level teams for his or her age group
should send an email to [email protected]. When a player is unwilling or unable to fulfill the participation
associated with playing on a highly competitive team, it is unfair to the other players trying out. It is also unfair to the team.
Please make the club aware of your intention after you register online for tryouts, but prior to the actual tryouts.
TRYOUTS GENERALLY
In general, Tryouts mark the end of one season and the beginning of the next. The tryouts are for the upcoming season’s birth year
chart (see Age Groups Grid on Page 3). The beginning of the ESC calendar is the Fall season which follows Tryouts.
U9s are a unique age group in that they have a July tryout to determine their Fall team placement, and then a February tryout to
determine their Summer team placement. It is not uncommon for players who are actually considered U7 or U8 to tryout for the
U9 teams. Placement is not guaranteed. U8s are encouraged to tryout. U7s can tryout with the understanding that placement is
unlikely.
For U10s and older, the July/August tryouts will be for both the Fall and Summer seasons.
Edina Soccer Club Pre-Registration MUST READ Document 7
League governing bodies determine the date ranges that ESC is allowed to hold tryouts. U9-U11 tryouts can be held immediately
following the U9/U10 Summer League Season. U12 + tryouts must be held once the Summer State Tournaments are complete.
ESC posts all Tryout dates as soon as possible. Please see the ESC website under the ‘tryouts’ tab regarding specific Tryout date
information.
ESC tryouts will take place in July and early August for the upcoming Fall and Summer League Seasons.
For U9s and younger (i.e., interested U7s and U8s), tryouts are in mid to late July. These tryouts will be for the Fall
League Season only. Please note that there will also be an additional U9 tryout in February for placement on Summer U9
teams.
For U10 and U11s, tryouts are mid to late July. These tryouts will be for both the Fall and Summer League Seasons.
For U12 and older, tryouts are late July – early August. These tryouts will be for both the Fall and Summer League
Seasons.
Please see ESC’s REGISTRATION for details.
Once you have registered, and if you find that you are unable to attend tryouts due to emergency or unforeseen circumstances,
please email the club at [email protected].
All players are assessed on an ongoing basis. Players are placed on teams according to their tryout performance data (all players)
and final coach evaluation information (current ESC players only). Tryout performance data is derived from tryout game
situations for all aged players.
Everyone wishing to play on an ESC team for Fall and Summer must register online, whether you are able to attend
tryouts or not. $535 is due from U10 and older players who are registering for Edina Soccer Club. $35 is a non-refundable
Tryout Fee. $500 is a deposit for the year and will be credited on final team billing in May. $300 is due from U8-U9 players who
are registering. $35 is a non-refundable Tryout Fee. $265 is the full Fall Fee for U9 teams.
Tryout Only Registration ($35 non-refundable tryout fee) is available for those trying out for multiple clubs. If placed on an ESC
roster, a confirmation along with the $500 deposit will be due in full by August 6th to hold your roster spot.
Current ESC players - If a current ESC player does not attend tryouts, that player’s placement decision will be made
using all available data.
Players new to ESC - If a player is new to ESC, and does not attend tryouts, he/she will go through the waitlist process.
Waitlist players will undergo a tryout at a team practice or at a Club training event. Following the tryout, the player may
be placed on a team, or placed within a waitlist pool comparable with their tryout in the age group. Waitlist order can and
will change throughout the course of the calendar year.
If you are unable to attend tryouts but intend on playing, indicate this within the online tryout registration. Please email the club if
you suddenly discover that you cannot attend because of illness, injury, etc. Tryout results for both seasons will be posted on the
ESC website as soon as they are available following tryouts.
Please read the PLAYER COMMITMENT EXPECTATIONS FOR EDINA SOCCER CLUB PLAYERS section above.
ESTIMATED COSTS
Costs vary depending on age group/team level, tournaments entered, coach, Indoor Season commitments and uniforms.
The required uniform package cost is in addition to each team’s fees. Cost for the package changes with each new 2-year uniform
cycle. Uniform information, including pricing and ordering, is available on the ESC website under the ‘uniforms’ tab. You may
purchase additional items as needed anytime during the year.
Team Fees: Generally, fees for an ESC player will range anywhere from $900 - $2000 annually (fall through summer). Some
key points related to financial expectations:
Higher-level teams generally pay more than lower level teams Higher-level teams are more likely to have higher out of pocket expenses (see below) Higher-level teams are more likely to incur travel expenses (see below)
Edina Soccer Club Pre-Registration MUST READ Document 8
There are seven factors that comprise the Team Fee (and do not include out of pocket expenses). These include:
Registration Fee: Everyone in the club is assessed the same Registration Fee. The fee demonstrates a commitment to
Edina Soccer Club. The registration fee will be applied to your final deposit for the year.
Tryout Fee: Everyone is assessed a fee to tryout for Edina Soccer Club.
Club Fee: Everyone in the club is assessed the same Club Fee. It covers all costs related to running the club such as
MYSA/TCSL team and player/adult pass fees, insurance, background checks, referees, field use fees, clinics, grants,
payroll, postage, facility rentals, coach equipment, coach licensing, state and district tournament fees, annual audit,
website fees, credit card fees, etc.
Coach Fee: This is team specific. The coach fee for each team is divided amongst the number of players on each team.
Tournament Fee: This is team specific. The tournament fee for each team is divided amongst the number of players on
each team and includes tournament registration and coach travel costs if they apply.
Indoor Season Fee: Indoor Season opportunities fall into two buckets: 1. Club-provided training (coach/trainer and
facility) and 2. Team-determined training and/or game play. All Club-provided training fees are assessed across the entire
team. Fees for team-determined training can be assessed at a Club level, a Team level or even an individual Player level.
It is important that your team discuss the best way to handle Team-determined activities in consultation with the Director
of Coaching.
Dome Fee: Each player pays $30 annually for the Edina Dome Priority Use Fee per ESC’s commitment to the City of
Edina for use of the Braemar Dome.
Out of Pocket Expenses: Other potential costs:
Uniform: The required uniform package cost is in addition to each team’s fees. Cost for the package changes with each
new 2-year uniform cycle. Uniform information, including pricing, is available on the ESC website. You may purchase
additional items as needed at any time during the year.
Spiritwear/Gear: These items are all optional.
Travel Expenses: These costs are typically handled individually or at a team level and may include airline, bus, car, food
and hotel expenses. Travel expenses can be high, depending on the level of the team, and distance/time travelled.
Team Slush Fund: Some teams prefer to have a fund that will cover random expenses throughout the year. This could
cover things like T-shirts, team parties, last minute tournaments, etc.
Coach/Manager Gifts: Teams often find ways to say thank you to their coaches and managers.
Additional Training: Individual players have the option to sign up for many Club-offered development opportunities,
ranging from individual one-on-one training to ESC-led pool training (indoor skills training, Futsal, summer camps, etc.).
Please see the ESC website for additional training opportunities.
IMPORTANT: Any family who cannot satisfy the financial requirements (Team Fees and Out of Pocket Expenses) for
his or her age group should send an email to [email protected]. Higher-level teams will incur higher
fees/costs/expenses than lower level teams due, primarily, to travel tournaments. Please make the club aware of your
financial concerns after you register online for tryouts, but prior to the actual tryouts.

FALL LEAGUE SEASON (September 1-October 31)
Fall League Season is available to U9 through U14 teams only.
Edina Soccer Club Pre-Registration MUST READ Document 10
There is NO Fall League Season for U15-U19 due to High School and Middle School (Jr. High) fall teams (9th
-12th
grades). There
is only a Summer League Season at these age groups.
The Fall League Season starts the weekend after Labor Day and continues for about six weeks. Players have an average of one
game per week and two practices per week. Games are played on Saturdays and/or Sundays. Practices are scheduled depending on
field and coach availability. The League Fall State Tournament is recommended for teams that qualify (U11 and up). All other
tournaments are optional during the Fall Season.
U15 Players that are in 8th
Grade
Under the birth year system U15 teams have eighth and ninth graders on the same roster. Many of the ninth graders on those teams
will participate in high school soccer programs in the fall. Eighth graders typically do not play high school soccer, and ninth
graders born January-July will still be eligible to play fall club soccer. Each year this will create a "Gap Group" a group of eighth
graders in the U15 age group who do not have a team for the fall of their U15 year while their 9th grade teammates play high
school soccer.
"GAP GROUP" Fall 2018
Birth Year 2004
Each year the Directors of Coaching will create a fall program plan for these players. ESC has the capability to provide fall
programming for "Gap Group" players by utilizing any/all of the following options:
Number Dependent: Form a fall League U14 team(s) with "Gap Group" players who are 2004 birth year.
Existing Roster Space: Place individuals or groups of players within existing U14 teams who are 2005 birth year.
Non-Team Based: Provide programming similar to high school/league fall season with a combination of scrimmages,
futsal, and exhibition games with neighboring clubs.
“Gap Group” players (2004 birth year) will start indoor programming in November with their Summer U15 teams.
INDOOR SEASON (November 1-April 30)
The Indoor Season is comprised of Development and League Play opportunities. ALL players at ALL ages and ALL levels are
highly encouraged to maximize their opportunities.
Players and/or teams may be grouped together into “pools” to facilitate effective training.
Teams will have Indoor Season fees included in their Team Fees. This is the case for teams representing the highest level in their
age group (ESC Academy), or any team not at the highest level that participates in ESC team Indoor Season opportunities.
U7-U9 U10 U11 U12-U18
Individual Training Players are instructed on soccer technique with the
focus on individual skills and small sided games for
development.
Age-Group Pool Training Players are pooled by age or skill to focus on both
technical and tactical development.
Team Training/Practices Players train and practice as teams, much like they
would during the summer and fall seasons.
Futsal/Indoor League Game Play Players and teams can participate in competitive play
options during the winter months.
Goalie Training Edina Soccer Club is proud to offer training that is
specific to our goalies
Edina Soccer Club Pre-Registration MUST READ Document 11
SUMMER LEAGUE SEASON (April 1-August 5)
April sessions may be indoors or outdoors, depending on weather. Generally, team coaches will be involved in practices and play,
depending on coach assignment and availability. April team training may be coach or trainer led. Players and/or teams may be
grouped together into “pools” to facilitate effective training.
The Summer League Season starts the first week of April and continues through mid-July for all age groups. U11 and older teams
are expected to participate in the State Tournament competition from mid-July through the first weekend in August. During the
league season, teams will have an average of one game and two to three practices per week. Games are played on weekdays.
Practices are scheduled based on field and coach availability. U10 and older teams will also participate in 2 weekend tournaments
(U9 teams participate in 1 tournament). Some teams travel to out-of-state tournaments. Individual travel costs are in addition to
and separate from club fees. Coach travel costs are shared by the team and are divided by the number of players on the roster.
Please Proceed to the Information Below That is Consistent With the Age
Group of the Player you are Registering
U7, U8 and U9 SPECIFIC INFORMATION
This age group is considered non-competitive, scores are not recorded and this is the final age bracket with no post-season play in
either the Fall or Summer League Seasons. Strong emphasis is placed on individual and team skill development as well as
readiness for upcoming, increasingly competitive years of soccer. Teams play 7 versus 7 against other soccer clubs. There is a
Fall League Season and a Summer League Season.
Players will be placed on teams according to the league governing body’s designations.
Placement on a team in the Fall League Season does not guarantee placement on a summer season team.
Based on tryout results in the February, players may or may not play with the same team members in the summer season as they
did in the fall season. Players may not necessarily play at the same level from the Fall League Season to the Summer League
Season, nor should they expect to have the same coach.
Indoor Season (November 1 through April 30) opportunities are offered through individual sign-up, and will be allocated on a first
come-first served basis. Participation in the Indoor Season is strongly encouraged for skill development prior to the February
tryouts and to facilitate continuity from the Fall Season. Once placed on a team, players are expected to participate in the Indoor
Season beginning March 1.

ESC Academy. Players on other teams may opt-in to the ESC Academy (if space is available) and other ESC development
opportunities.
Indoor Season (November 1 through April 30) Academy development and league play is a part of the top teams’ commitments.
Committed players on other teams should sign up for ESC development opportunities and may opt-in for Academy opportunities
on an individual sign-up (November-February). Players will be allocated for Academy opt-in on a first come-first served basis if
space is available. Beginning March 1, as part of the Indoor Season, ALL teams prepare for the Summer League Season with
specific dates and locations assigned by the Club.
Why do U9’s have tryouts in July and February?
Current and prospective U9 players participate in two tryouts. These tryouts serve the changes in development and the
increased pool we typically see at this age group. U9 players have a July tryout to determine placement on Fall teams
and also in February to determine placement for Summer teams.

There is NO Fall League Season due to High School and Middle School (Jr. High) fall teams (9th
-12th
grades). There is only a
Summer League Season at these age groups.
U15 Players that are in 8th
Grade (ADD)
The performance of a team during the prior Summer League Season determines what level they play at the following Summer
League Season.

ESC PARENT’S CODE OF CONDUCT
The Edina Soccer Club (ESC) is committed to the development of our players. And the parents of our players are critical in that
process. ESC recommends the following Best Practices for our parents. In the event of repeated failures to abide by these best practices,
ESC may take action – up to and including game suspensions and dismissal from the Club – to protect the values of the Club and in the
interests of our players and teams.
• Communicate – ESC wants our players and parents to communicate praise as well as soccer-related concerns to our coaches. The ESC Age
Group Directors should be engaged once the communication pathway between players, parents and coaches has been exhausted. Please get
comfortable approaching our coaches directly.
• No coaching from the sidelines – Please honor the fact that our paid coaches have the soccer instruction under control at all times during
games and practice. Your good intentions might just be fundamentally incorrect or untimely from an individual or team development
standpoint. Please cheer, don’t coach.
• No yelling/shouting/screaming at people – Please don’t yell at referees, players, or coaches. Things won’t always go the way you want.
Referees will make mistakes, players from both teams will do stupid things, and coaches will disappoint you. But we must all guard against
creating an environment that is hostile or uncomfortable. No matter how competitive you might be, remember this: No one is trying to do
poorly, so don’t scream at them.
• Timeliness – Picking up your child on time is equally important to having them arrive on time. Please don’t burden our busy coaches with the
inconvenient, and inappropriate, role of “babysitting” your child after practice. Be on time.
• Gracious in victory, gracious in defeat – Let’s be a community that “wins” well and “loses” even better.
• Development takes precedence – ESC values the development of our players over wins and losses, number of tournaments played, or league
standings. Any soccer club can manufacture winning at the expense of development. ESC will always chase development first.
• Honor the team mentality – While ESC wants to respect your family decisions regarding vacations, other sports, and busy schedules, we want
you as parents to remember that your child is playing a team sport. Your child’s participation is essential to the team. Please consider the
team when there is a choice in the matter.
• Attend PACT – The Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) strongly endorses Parents and Coaches Together (PACT) as a way to
create a positive climate for youth soccer players and their families. Please attend at least one PACT program. Information about PACT can
be found here: http://www.mnyouthsoccer.org/page/show/680942-pact
• More is caught than is taught – Please try to remember that ESC and MYSA and TCSL are merely a platform for much greater development.
While soccer development is important, all of us have the ability to help shape and develop these young men and women. While we will do
everything we can to be a positive piece to that complex puzzle, please remember to maintain perspective. Cheer for all players - not just those
on our teams. Encourage and thank the referees – they are usually doing their best. And try to demonstrate behavior that you would be proud
of, no matter the circumstances.

tryout fee plus $265 full fall fees, since there are separate tryouts in February for U9 summer teams), that I intend on playing
for ESC. Should I be placed on a team, I will have until Monday, August 6th, at 9:00am to decline my roster spot via email, and
receive a refund of my deposit. If declining a roster spot by the August 6th deadline, I would also be free to join another club
