‘ The course exceeded my expectations, very impressed with activities, materials and speakers. It has helped me refocus and understand professionally the issues of working in public management’ Service Director, SLaM NHS Foundation Trust

Summer SessionsKing’s College London is a world renowned, research-led university, committed to the advancement of knowledge, learning and understanding. As part of this mission, our Summer Sessions allow academic departments to reach out to new audiences and offer participants the chance to access cutting-edge research within their particular field of interest or occupation. As a branch of the wider Summer Programmes portfolio, which also includes the Undergraduate Summer School and Pre-University Summer School, Summer Sessions are designed with the working adult in mind, from early career academics to business professionals.

Course overviewThis course will review key themes in public management reforming practices and consider their links to the wider political economy, including: the classic public administration model; the challenge from New Public Management (NPM) and the NPM/post NPM debate.

It will also consider the implications of these reform processes for the enhanced application of some strategic management approaches in the public services. Key authors and models will be explained and discussed, along with techniques for practical analysis. The course will consider UK and international advances in this area.

Finally, the course will explore the role and concept of ‘leadership’ as a notable element of post NPM reform, and consider different models of leadership in public sector settings and what implications there may be for developing different styles of personal leadership.

Spaces are limited to maximise the interactive nature of the small group teaching.
