Issue 486 Summer Term
Friday 9th June, 2017
From the Headmaster
Having returned after the half term break, the Reception children are certainly rising to the challenge of
lining-up on the playground before school as well as carrying their own tray to their places (without
dropping it) at lunchtime! It has to be said that time is really marching on and I’m certain that the children
are now looking forward to taking the next step on the educational ladder in the weeks to come. Right
across the school, the staff have been busy in preparing your children’s end of year reports and I hope that
you are looking forward to receiving them in due course.
However, before we get ahead of ourselves, there is still so much yet to be undertaken before reports are
issued! Indeed, we have been getting into the spirit of the general election, with the children in Years 3-6
casting their votes in Fairfield’s Polling station, located in the atrium of the New Build. It certainly will be an
interesting experience to see if the outcome from our election mirrors that of the nation. Hopefully we will
know the topography of the political landscape after the Reception Dance Show!
Just before half-term, Year 5 embarked on a residential trip to London. It was a fabulous trip for all concerned and has given the children many life-long memories to treasure. We began with a visit to the Natural History and Science Museums; dinosaurs and explosions! The next day we saw the sights of London from coach, boat and capsule (London Eye). We were guided around the Tower of London by actors in tudor and medieval dress and capped the day off with seats in the stalls to see The Lion King. On our final day we visited the wonderful world of “KidZania” – an indoor city run by children; they became pilots, presenters, fashion stylists and delivery people to name but a few. A truly magnificent trip! Well done to the children for being so well behaved and the staff for giving up their time to look after them. Mr Smail.
Congratulations to the following children who performed in today’s lunchtime recital.

On Friday 12th May, the Beavers went on a trip to Loughborough Fire Station. They had a fabulous time learning about the different equipment the firemen use to rescue people and stop fires. This visit contributed to the Beavers “My World Challenge Award.” The firemen were very welcoming and ensured the boys had lots of fun by allowing them to spray the hoses and have a ride in the fire engine! Thank you to all the parents who came along to help; it was most appreciated. If you have any questions regarding Beavers please contact Corinne via email [email protected]
Can parents please be aware that we do not have cold storage facilities for lunch boxes. As the weather hopefully improves, can we politely request that you use a cool pack or insulated lunch boxes to keep your child's food cool.
Children in the Upper Prep are invited to take part in a summer term Fairfield Language Competition. Each year group has
the chance to learn a different language on Chatterbox:

Year 2 had a busy bee start to the first day back! Mrs Forsyth, who is a bee keeper, came to talk to us about the interesting life of bees. We learnt so many fascinating facts, perhaps most significantly, how important they are to our world. We tried on what bee keepers would wear to tend their hives, as well as tasting different types of honey – delicious!
On Thursday, children in Years 3-6 voted as part of the School General Election. From 303 votes the results are as follows:
Conservatives 59% Labour 19% Green Party 15% Liberal Democrats 5% UKIP 2% Mrs Ridley.
As you will know, the world of social media is an ever-changing place. It is important that there is an open dialogue between you and your children about being safe online. There is a new app called ‘Yellow’ and it is being billed as Tinder for children. The concern is that there are no age restrictions in place and once a ‘friendship’ has been made with a simple swipe, the ‘friend’ can access other photo based apps such as Snapchat.
Key messages:
we will continue to talk to and educate your children about E-safety
you need to be aware of the risks
be on top of privacy settings and monitor your children when they are online
make sure that your children know who to turn to for help

SPORTS REPORTS
Cricket v Ratcliffe College
The Fairfield ’C’ team showed how much they had learnt this term with a convincing win against Ratcliffe. The home team scored 106 but found it hard to score off the bat. Sam bowled well to get 3 wickets and there were also 3 run outs. Jack H's direct hit from 15 metres was the pick of these. Fairfield batted sensibly to meet the Ratcliffe total with 2 overs to spare and for the loss of only 2 wickets. Jack P in particular hit the ball cleanly and was in control throughout. The boys all ran between the wicket well too. Mr Wilbraham.
On Wednesday, the ‘D’ team played at Ratcliffe College and were in the very fortunate position of playing on the hallowed 1st team square of the Senior School. We fielded first and with some tight bowling and fielding we managed to restrict the host to 94 in their 24 overs. We then took our turn to bat and wow, what an effort! We hit the ball beautifully and ran between the wickets well. We managed 174 runs in our innings and ran out easy winners. Well played boys! Mr Young.
The 1st XI team travelled to Ratcliffe on Wednesday looking to secure a much-needed victory against their local rivals. We were put into bat first and started brightly. After 20 overs we had made a respectable 113 - 4. We knew that we'd have to bowl and field well in order to defend our total. We were tight in the field, but Ratcliffe's batsmen soon began to find holes and with 3 overs to go, they needed just 9 runs. Some excellent death bowling took vital wickets and we ran away with a well-deserved 7 run victory. Mr Bancroft.
The Fairfield ‘B’ team travelled to Ratcliffe on an incredibly blustery afternoon. Fairfield won the toss and chose to bowl first. The boys’ focus in the field was admirable; they walked in with every ball and backed up when necessary. Fairfield’s alertness in the field and accurate bowling meant that they contained Ratcliffe to 57 runs off 20 overs. The boys’ mature approach was reflected in their batting too; they punished the bad balls, defended the good balls and communicated excellently between the stumps. The chase proved easy for Fairfield; they reached Ratcliffe’s total with seven overs to spare and five wickets in hand. A strong victory, in style. Well done Fairfield! Mr Arnold
SPORTS REPORTS
Rounders v Ratcliffe College
Wednesday 7th June saw two Year 6 teams arriving at Ratcliffe School in the windiest of conditions. The rounders posts were already blowing over before we even warmed up. Both teams fielded with military precision, putting their training into practise. They were able to stop Ratcliffe from scoring half rounders at 2nd post effectively. All three bowlers were nothing other than phenomenal as they bowled brilliantly in the gusty conditions. Batting was also difficult as the wind was carrying the ball, but the girls were making contact with the ball and we succeeded in scoring a high number of rounders in both games. Well done to all the girls. Mrs Lewis. Results: ‘A ‘ team won 18 - 7 ½ ‘B ‘ team won 19 ½ - 10
Fairfield travelled to Ratcliffe on Wednesday 7th June for their U10 ‘B’ Rounders fixture. Because of the blustery weather conditions, the girls had to adapt and use this to their advantage when possible. The Fairfield girls were first to bat and had a great start as they ran in 12 rounders. We quickly swapped around and had to adapt to Ratcliffe’s first attempt at batting. We worked the field well and minimised their scoring opportunities where possible. After a quick half-time team talk, we went into the second innings with an adjusted game plan when fielding. The girls scored an additional 11 rounders and stopped a challenging Ratcliffe team from scoring many additional rounders with the use of great ball handling and accurate throwing when fielding.
Final score: Ratcliffe 20 - 23 Fairfield.
Well played girls; you all scored some fantastic rounders and played brilliantly despite the windy conditions! Mr Wilson.
The U10 ‘A’ squad were very excited to be able to play their rounders fixture against Ratcliffe College after the stormy weather that has been in force this week. Our captain elected to field first which meant they had to quickly adapt to the interesting weather conditions; posts were blown over and balls were sent way off course! With some tight fielding and super supporting play at the bases they kept the score to 6 rounders. When we went into bat we had under-estimated how much the wind was affecting the batters too. Judging the flight of the ball proved to be quite hard and this meant that we had to try and add up lots of half rounders. The girls did this incredibly well and took a half rounder lead into the 2nd innings. The 2nd innings was incredibly close with both teams improving when fielding and making the most of the opportunities to get people out. Fairfield held on for the victory and won the game 10-9½. Well done girls a fabulous effort! Thank you to the many parents who came to support! Mrs Webster.
