Portsmouth Music Hub wins national award for Innovation

On 20 March 2013 the winners were announced of the inaugural Music Teacher Awards for Excellence at the Barbican Centre. The awards celebrate excellence in music education and recognise those who have contributed the most to the development of music education in the UK.

Portsmouth Music Hub is delighted to have won the Music Hub Innovation Award, out of 123 other music hubs from across the country. It is great news that Portsmouth’s innovative and trail-blazing lead in developing the Music Hub to suit the needs of children and young people in Portsmouth has achieved this national recognition.

On hearing about the Hub Award, Sophie Osborne, aged 13, a member of the Young Musicians’ Council said: “It's brilliant news that Portsmouth Music Hub has won the Hub Innovation Award. I am really excited about it - we think the Hub is fantastic and it’s great that other people have decided this as well.”

Emily Saville, aged 14 said, “The Hub provides young people with so many amazing opportunities to do things we never dreamed of like coaching younger students, conducting, helping at events and deciding what the Hub should do next. The Hub puts young people at the centre of everything it does and that's really great!"

Sue Beckett, Director of Portsmouth Music Hub said, “We are absolutely thrilled to receive this award. The Hub’s Partners are a fantastic team who are committed to supporting the Hub’s musical offer to children and young people across Portsmouth.”

Circus-scapeCircus-scape was the culmination of weeks of rehearsals by hundreds of children from across the city to an audience of VIP’s, parents and families at the Kings Theatre on Monday 18th March 2013.

Performing specially commissioned songs from the Hub’s latest songbook, the evening was a kaleidoscope of circus skills and songs. There were jugglers, unicyclists, dancers, plate spinners and a hoop contortionist helping the children bring the songs to life on the stage. Presiding over the event was Ringmaster Simon Cattermole, ensuring that the circus moved forward at a thrilling pace.

Circus-Scape was yet another large scale event bringing the community together to celebrate the diversity and talent in our city.

Congratulation to all Partners of the Portsmouth Music Hub, teachers, headteachers, Music Service staff and, of course, the brilliant performers.

The event was professionally filmed and will be available as a DVD from Portsmouth Music Hub. If you would like a copy of the DVD, please contact the Music Hub Centre by e-mail at [email protected]. DVDs cost £10.

Ready 4 MusicThe final week of Ready 4 Music teaching is the first week in July so that the final sessions will be taught on 5th July.

We hope that schools will want to showcase the progress that the children have made during the year and will want to present concerts to parents at, or shortly before, the final session of the year.

During the last two weeks of term the instruments will be checked for damage and repairs. Where schools are not continuing with the same instruments, the instruments will be collected from 8th July onwards.

Schools are reminded that they are responsible for ensuring that all instruments are returned by pupils.

Research evidence shows that pupils benefit from whole class music teaching in all sorts of developmental ways far beyond its intrinsic musical value and we look forward to working with your school again next year.

A number of pupils say they want to continue playing next year and schools are invited to consider booking instrumental teaching time so that children can continue to learn in large or small groups. You could even have the whole class continuing to learn by booking teaching time for Year 5. Some schools have requested instrumental learning as an after school club as another way to enable pupils to continue learning.

Pupil Profile: Frances OʼSullivanCongratulations to flautist Frances O’Sullivan, who is currently studying for her A levels at South Downs College, has been offered a conditional place at King’s College, Cambridge to read Music and is considering offers from Durham, York and Bristol.

Frances is very active within Portsmouth Music Hub and is a member of the Senior Wind Band and Portsmouth Plays, in which she also mentors some of the younger players. Steve Tanner and Lisa Lyster have helped Frances along her musical path and she is hugely grateful for their ongoing help and support. Attendance at the legendary “Saturday Band” gave her an excellent start! As well as the flute, she is also an accomplished saxophone player. In March, she was invited to perform for the Friends of Music in Winchester where she wowed the audience by playing the unaccompanied Sonatina for flute by Richard Rodney Bennett. During one of the interviews at Cambridge, Frances discussed how Beethoven wrote different music because he had not heard, and been influenced by, the music of today. She said, “I really enjoyed the discussion with the interviewers as I could enthuse about music with them. At one point I even did an impression of an angry time-travelling Beethoven. I think it went down quite well.”

Frances has recently composed a piece of music in the style of a Verdi aria. She undertook the composition for her Extended Project which gave her a broader knowledge of her subject which contributed to her success at interview.

Although she has not yet decided on the future, Frances enjoys teaching two flute pupils and finds this really rewarding. She said, “The advantage of music as a subject is that it is so broad and my options for the future include performing, composing and teaching. I think I may end up doing a combination of all of them.”

Nicola Williams: Hub Liaison OfficerHello!

Allow me to introduce myself. I am Nicola and I have just started my voluntary position with Portsmouth Music Hub. This post is a collaboration with the national organisation ʻMaking Musicʼ who strive to develop musicians and help them to flourish. I have been living in Portsmouth for over 7 years moving here for University, gaining a degree in Creative Arts and English at The University of Portsmouth, graduating in 2008.

I also work at The New Theatre Royal volunteering with the Outreach and Education department. This has fueled my love for Community Arts and I discovered I have a flair for producing and event management. Since then I have coordinated an assortment of city wide events such as The Lost Hour and imPact Dance Festival.

I am very inspired by the work done within the Portsmouth Music Hub and what it has achieved in the city. I am looking forward to being part of the award winning, innovative team and especially spending more time with my pal, Pompey Howarth!

Award Winners!

We are thrilled to have won the prestigious award of Best Classical Music Education Initiative at Rhinegold Publishingʼs inaugural Music Teacher Awards for Excellence.

This is a fantastic reflection of all the hard work that has been put in to ensure we are the number one provider of orchestral training for children across Great Britain.

Vivienne Price, NCO founder, sums up the team's delight:“This award confirms and advances all the hopes I had in founding the NCO. It is a wonderful tribute to all that Roger Clarkson as Principal Director of Music and the wider NCO team has done and continues to do in raising standards to this level. It is wonderful that our innovative and unique approach has been recognised in this way.”

Sarah Derbyshire, Managing Director of the NCO adds:"This is a great accolade for the NCO, not least because this was the only Music Teacher award voted for by the public, through the Classic FM website. It's fantastic that so many supporters, including current and ex NCO members, cast their vote for us. We couldn't ask for a better way to launch this year's celebrations of the NCO's achievements over the past 35 years."

A massive thank you to everyone who took the time to support us and helped us to win this special prize.

GALA CONCERT, March 28th 2013, The Kings Theatre, Southsea

Following on from last yearʼs 80th anniversary concert, Portsmouth Music Festival returned to present their Gala Concert featuring the winners and best performances from the Festival's music, drama and dance sections. It was described as "the tip of the iceberg" of a wonderful festival and demonstrated the very best talent that Portsmouth has to offer! Gwenda Dearsley, Chairman of the Festival, commented that the dance by Samuel Wright from "La Fille Mal Gardee" was one of her personal highlights.

Jenny Whitby (flute) was awarded the Solent Symphony Orchestra's Concerto Prize andwill play a concerto at next February's SSO Concert.

Anthony Cheng (piano) was awarded the The Portsmouth Festivities Recital Prize and willgive his recital as part of the Festivities programme in 2014.

Conroy Adams-Merrigan (violin) was awarded the Chairman's Cup.

Special thanks go to Phil Pennington and his team from Park Community School for all their hard work in charge of the stage and lighting, and to Nathan Carter for the sound. Thanks also to John Gleadall, who was a fantastic MC and helped contribute to a wonderful evening.

Heads of Strings and Guitar Gwenda Dearsley and Angela Kinsey described the section as very successful again this year, with a large number of enthusiastic young players and some exceptional senior violinists. Laia Montserrat was awarded the Portsmouth Chorus Challenge Cup for the best performance by a player aged between 15 and 21. The Guitar section was rather small this year but we were treated to some delightful performances by adults and younger players.

GALA CONCERT, March 28th 2013, The Kings Theatre, Southsea continued...

Head of Piano Carol Frogley noted that once again all entrants enjoyed the privilege of playing on the Steinway grand piano in the Menuhin Room. The performers ranged from young novices to older teens and adults at grade 8 and above. We had an excellent adjudicator who encouraged the performers of all standards. At the Solent Symphony Orchestra Concert in February this year the orchestra commented, following her performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3, that pianist Monica Zhenyu Shi, winner of the concerto award 2012, was the best they had ever performed with.

Head of the Recorder section Jennie Flatman said the recorders continued to flourish, with a larger number of classes taking place than in previous years. One of the highlights of the section was the introduction of the 'whole-class recorder ensemble' classes designed for the increasing number of children learning to play in a classroom environment, and we would love to see more schools enter these classes in the future!

Head of Vocal – Contemporary Dielle Hannah, described this section as a very varied day with singers as young as 7 years showing off their microphone technique and vocal skill. There were some fantastic performances from Caroline Herzsenhorn singing 'Jar of Hearts' in Young Singers, and from Maria Lawes in the Adult Singers class for the Bond theme tune 'Skyfall'. In the Vocal – Classical and Traditional section the outstanding singers were Tamzin Barnett on the Young Singers day and Victoria Barker on the Adults day. In the Choral Section on the Young Choirs day there were 13 choirs, including nearly 400 young performers. St John's Chapel Choir gave their usual outstanding display, winning two Honours grades, but adjudicator Andrea Calladine was especially impressed by Romsey Youth Choir. The Adult Choirs day had just 4 choirs taking part but it was good to see a new ensemble, Local Vocals, entering only a year or so after theirformation. They went on to win the overall trophy for making the greatest impression on theadjudicator.

GALA CONCERT, March 28th 2013, The Kings Theatre, Southsea continued...

Head of Rock and Pop John Gleadall commented that, despite some problems with organisation of the section, the performances on the day had been brilliant, with all the bands rooting for each other with a real sense of camaraderie. Steve Grainger, Portsmouth's own superstar saxophonist and adjudicator for the section found it difficult to judge between many of the 13 bands who entered and was blown away by the quality and variety of music. He invited The Hitmen and 4 Days On to perform at the Gala Concert, and he also asked West Sussex band Ocean Giant to take part in the Nevada Music promoted series of concerts this Summer at the Plaza venue on Hayling Island.

Head of Brass Gemma Billington said that the high quality of the section shone through again this year. Isabel Howson was awarded the ISM Trophy for Best Communicated Solo Performance 13- 18 years for her Honours performances on tuba and trombone. Her cousin Verity Flood won the Maurice Andre Cup for Best Tone in the Brass section. Rachael Pinkney won the Woods Trophy for Most Promising 12 & under performer. The Denegri Cup (a special award for Most Inspiring Performer or Teacher) was awarded to Karen Kingsley for her outstanding accompaniments throughout the Festival.

The Chapel Choir of St John’s College, Southsea, has just released ‘Vatican Voices’ - a CD of live recordings from their Choir Tour to Italy, including nine items from Mass at St Peter’s Basilica, The Vatican.

The CD, priced at £6, contains 18 tracks of music performed during the tour, which included notable venues such as St Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican; the Papal Archbasilica in Rome; the Colosseum, and Pisa, Milan, Florence and Assisi Cathedrals.

The group of 42 choristers travelled to Italy in August last year, and as well as performing in some of the world’s most famous cathedrals were granted a rare Audience with the Pope.

Mr Keith Ellison, Head of Music at St John’s College and Choirmaster, formed the Choir over four years ago and commented. “The Tour was such a great success it was difficult to choose which tracks to include. Leading the Pontifical Mass at the Vatican was such a momentous occasion for the boys, so we decided to use nine recordings from live performances in St Peter’s.

We have included two Coronation anthems, and there are several a capella pieces by Tallis and Byrd amongst many others. The CD will be a wonderful keepsake for the Choristers and the family and friends who joined us – but also allows us to share what was an incredible experience with others. The fact it was all recorded live adds to the experience of ‘actually being there.’”

The current Head Chorister of the Choir is James Simpson, aged 14. James said, “I was appointed as Head Chorister in Rome after the Vatican Mass. It was a once in a lifetime tour, full of unbelievable memories. Now we have a CD of all the music so we can remember what we sung forever. It’s just amazing.”

Music in the Round: Heath Quartet

Rapidly emerging as a quartet with its own exciting and original voice, the Heath Quartet has already won first prize in the Tromp International Competition and second prize in the Haydn International Competition. Equally at home with classical and contemporary repertoire, the members are part of the Wigmore Hall’s Emerging Talent scheme, for which they plan to perform a complete Tippett cycle.

Mozart’s String Quartet in E flat is part of a set dedicated to Haydn, upon which he inscribed, ‘Here they are then, O great man and my dearest friend, these six children of mine‘. Tippett’s fourth String Quartet, premiered by The Lindsays in 1979, explores the journey of a human life through an unbroken sequence of movements. The structure mirrors that of Beethoven’s Op.131; Beethoven was Tippett’s compositional hero.

Tchaikovsky’s emotive Quartet in E flat minor was dedicated to the memory of his friend, violinist Ferdinand Laub. The searching expression of the first movement and grief of the third movement’s funeral march is contrasted by the cheerful second and life-affirming final movement.
