Welcome to Worship at St. Matthew’s July 23, 2017 Good morning! May this time of worship and receiving God’s Word refresh and rejuvenate you for faithful living. Welcome, all! Introduction for the Day: It is an age-old question: why is there evil in the world? In the parable of the wheat and the weeds Jesus suggests that both grow together until the harvest. With Paul, we long for the day that all creation will be set free from bondage and suffering. Having both weeds and wheat within us, we humbly place our hope in the promises of God and from the Lord’s Table we go forth to bear the fruit of justice and mercy. All are invited to the Table of our Lord Jesus Christ to receive the real presence of Christ in bread and wine at the 8:30 service. St. Matthew’s welcomes children to receive the sacrament with parental support. Children or others not communing are always invited forward for a blessing. If you are seated in the chapel and wish to come forward for communion please leave the chapel and join the center aisle line at any time during distribution. Gluten-free wafers are available if you ask your communion server. Those who desire juice instead of regular wine, please tell this to the communion assistant. Due to the weight of the communion trays, you may be asked to take your glass of wine from the tray as it is presented to you. A Children’s Book is given to the church library by Joe, Emily and Abby Chiesa in honor of Lisa’s birthday. Please welcome J. Mark Baker on the Organ and Piano bench today while John is away. A native of Alabama, J. Mark Baker is the founding director of the Milwaukee Chamber Choir, holding a doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Thank you Mark for being with us today and sharing your talents. Candidates for Baptism: (10:15) Blake Kiedrowski, child of Daniel & Keely Kiedrowski, Waukesha, was born August 16, 2016. A note about healing: In ELW, at the beginning of the Healing service, we read: “Here all who sense the need for God’s healing in any aspect of their lives may join in prayers for others and themselves. Here each person may come to receive a word

of blessing and prayer. Here each one may also receive a physical gesture of healing: the laying on of hands, which may be

accompanied by anointing with oil. These signs, first given in baptism, tell us again that we are sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked forever with the cross of Christ, who is health and salvation for the world. In its ministry of healing, the church does not replace the gifts of God that come through the scientific community nor does it promise a cure. Rather, the church offers and

A note about your valuable items: A reminder to our members and guests that each week as you come to church, any valuable items should be kept with you and not left in coat pockets or in an unlocked space.

Note During the Sunday Prayers:St. Matthew’s has recently begun praying through the year-long Ecumenical Prayer Cycle, a project of the World Council of Churches, whereby congregations pray for each country and nation of the world by including nations each week in the prayers of the people. This week, we pray especially for the countries of Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda

Look for the map in the hallway toward the Music/Education wing for a visual representation of countries we’ve prayed for so far. Pray for:• Women who have contracted HIV and AIDS after

being raped in the DRC, Burundi and Rwanda.• Orphans, widows, street children, traumatized and

disabled people, those in overcrowded prisons, and those who live in the squalour of refugee camps.

• Those steeped in ethnic violence and hatred, that their hearts may be turned.

• The establishment of a stable and lasting peace in the region, so that those who have been forced to leave their homes may return, families may be reunited, and those who have suffered may begin to heal.

• An end to corruption and corporate greed, and the sustainable use of vast natural resources.

• Those displaced by violence, that they may be able to rebuild their lives.

Upcoming EventsAll are welcome at monthly healing services - Healing services are offered monthly at St. Matthew’s at a variety of times to give all the opportunity to come forward for healing prayer for themselves or others. You can share your concern with the pastor/leader at the altar, and then he/she along with the healing ministries will lay on hands and give a special prayer for your concern. Your concern can be general if you don’t wish to share specifically.

2017 Summer Salad and Study: Discovering Islam - Continues thru 8/13Pastor Matt invites you to continue his summer tradition of salad suppers and social conversations with an exploration of the Islamic Faith. Join us for 6 Sunday evenings, beginning July 9th at 6:30 p.m. as we use the ELCA-sponsored Discovering Islam curriculum to learn about the practices, cultures, and beliefs of our Muslim sisters and brothers. Bring a salad or dessert to share! Week Three: Islam—An American Faith For many these two ideas: Islam and America are not compatible; many on both sides feel that there is a great divide and that America can never reconcile with Islam and Muslims cannot live in peace with America. This week’s film aims to dispel that myth. Starting from a historical perspective highlighting the fact that Muslims were already present in the New World prior to the arrival of the first European settlers and coming to the present post 9/11 America.

If you are looking for the information about previous sessions you’ve missed, copies of handouts and summary sheets will be available both at each week’s session and through the church office at other times.

This fall we will be getting some fruit trees, with help from Pastor Margaret and some of St. Matthew’s members. The garden will be getting a sign later this month.Maintaining a garden of this size is not an easy task. Help would be greatly appreciated. If you wanna just come to spend some time in a calm place, come on down. If you have some frustrations you would like to weed out, come on down. Hygiene, Cleaning Products Needed by Reformation for “SonShine” Gifts Bags Many of the families served by Reformation live with food insecurity on a regular basis. Some receive SNAP benefits that help them put food on the table, but they do not cover such necessary items as personal hygiene supplies, cleaning products, and laundry products. Though they are necessities, the cost of those products can put them out of reach of low-income families. Reformation is helping to provide those necessary items by distributing “SonShine” gift bags as part of its “Strong Women Strong Babies” outreach. If you can help fill the bags with these essential goods, please bring items from the list below to the collection bin under the coat racks across from the office (next to the food pantry bins). Items needed are:

• Toilet tissue, single wrapped roll • Tampons and sanitary pads• Dish detergent (13 oz/small) • Toothpaste and toothbrushes• Ivory bar soap, family size • Cleaning sponges and cloths• Laundry detergent, one-load boxes • Pine-Sol cleaner

The Blessings of Serving as a Stephen Minister

Since 1975, more than 600,000 Christian men and women from all walks of life have trained

and served as Stephen Ministers. Most became a Stephen Minister as a way to help others

who were hurting-but they quickly discovered that God blesses them in amazing ways.

“Stephen Minister training taught me not

just how to be a caregiver, but how to live

life in a new way-being Christ to other

people. It’s an awesome blessing to be

used by God to bring hope and healing to

someone else. I am humbled. “

Mike, Carpenter; Kennesaw, Georgia

“The assertiveness skills I learned through

Stephen Ministry gave me the courage and

confidence I needed to be a more effective

supervisor in my secular job-and to be

more assertive in personal relationships.”

Elizabeth, Counselor; Madison, WI

“My faith has grown, my prayer life has

doubled, and I know how to really make a

difference in people’s lives. I’d encourage

anyone who has the chance to become a

Stephen Minister.”

George, Architect; Prairie Village, Kansas

“Being a Stephen Minister has been a

blessing in so many ways. It’s drawn me

closer to God. And, it’s made me part of a

loving, caring family of Stephen Ministers

and Stephen Leaders who support each

other in their ministry.”

Frank, U.S. Navy (Retired); Ballwin, Missouri

“Stephen Minister training has given me

skills I use all the time with my patients. It

enables me to provide a level of emotional

care that enhances the clinical care we

provide.”

Barbara, Dental Hygienist; Saginaw, MI

VBS at St. Matthew’s is an incredible experience for the children of St Matthew’s and a fantastic outreach for the children of our community. Each year we continue to grow our attendance number, but not our number of adult volunteers. Adults, we ask that you prayerfully consider signing up to teach VBS or be a Tour Guide. Please feel free to give me a call if you have questions or schedule limitations. FYI: The August 7th date was chosen because Wauwatosa’s Summer School runs until August 4th. Lincoln and East are the main summer school campuses and because of traffic/parking lot concerns we opted for the week of the 7th. We are sorry for any inconvenience.
