By Jim McNaughton

While looking at the lineup for thisyear’s Festival I became excited andconcerned. As a fan how can I possiblycatch all of the sets? We have thelargest number and best selection ofTrad Jazz Bands in years as well as avariety of outstanding bands andmusicians. Ray Skjelbred Cubs arenew and the Bob Schulz Frisco JazzBand, High Sierra and Buck Creek areback after an absence.

WOW! I can’t miss the Pianoramawith all the great musicians and twonewcomers Paolo Alderighi and JasonWanner. Paolo Alderighi will teamwith favorite Stephanie Trick for twosets. For a preview of the pairing youcan go to YouTube and search fortheir version of “Running Wild.”Popular performers Bob Draga andBrady McKay will be doing guestappearances with a number of thebands. The 34th Festival will surely beone of our biggest and best!

Festival 34, An Abundance of Talent! We were disappointed to learn that

Chloe will not be with us for the firsttime in many years. She is touringEurope the month of November withthe Pokey LaFarge band. Howevershe is sponsoring the Glenn CrytzerBand who will be featured in ourSaturday Extraganza. I will definitelymake time for the Extravaganza whichalso will include Stompy Jones, SuePalmer, and the Red Skunk Band — aswing dancer’s delight! Hope to seeall of you in November.

AFCDJS-sponsored workshops areheld the second Thursday of everymonth (except December) from 7 to9pm at the San Diego MusiciansHall, 1717 Morena Blvd., San Diego.

on bass playing intermissions atEarthquake McGoon’s! Howard alsoappeared with a band led by MuggsySpanier on a broadcast of jazz criticRalph Gleason’s “Jazz Casual” TVprogram. Besides Spanier and Howard, the high-energy band on this occasionincluded Joe Sullivan, piano; PopsFoster, bass; Earl Watkins, drums; andthe young trombonist Bob Mielke.

Howard’s onscreen expressions area joy to watch; especially as he usesbody language to indicate the rhythmsused on Jelly Roll Morton’s record of“Someday, Sweetheart” to Mielke, andwhen he sticks his tongue out — onnational television!

In 1966 Howard toured Europe withthe New Orleans All Stars. This groupwas led by British trumpeter KeithSmith and included Alvin Alcorn, trumpet; Jimmy Archey, trombone;Alton Purnell, piano; Pops Foster, bass ; and Cie Fraz ie r , d rums .Unfortunately, following the tour, hesuffered a stroke and was forced togive up playing music. He developeda brain tumor and died in September,1966.

Darnell Howard surely led one ofthe most interesting and rewardingcareers in Classic Jazz, from pre-Jazzdays with W.C. Handy to appearanceswith the most respected bandleadersof the Classic Jazz era and theTraditional Jazz Revival. He came upwi th a d i s t inc t , and ins tan t lyrecognizable style that will alwaysappeal to Jazz fans with good taste.Fortunately, those who read this articlemay enjoy the many highlights ofHoward’s career since — at the time ofthis writing — all of his recordings arecurrently available on CD!

Wayne Jones(1933-2013)

by Hal SmithAFCDJS Artistic Director

Wayne Jones , an icon ofTraditional Jazz drumming, passedaway on May 20, 2013 in Elmhurst,Illinois as a result of complicationsfrom Parkinson’s Disease.

Jones began a long associationwith the Salty Dogs Jazz Band in thelate 1950s, when the group was still astudent band at Purdue University. When the Dogs became a professionalworking band, Jones was the drummer.

His approach to Traditional Jazzdrumming was to play lightly, with alift — gently urging the ensemble andsoloists to swing. Jones often usedride cymbal, Chinese cymbal and hi-hats in addition to the press rolls, choke cymbal and blocks that areusually associated with the music. Hisdistinct sound was a hallmark of theSalty Dogs, as well as other Traditionalgroups he worked with, such asWaldo’s Gutbucket Syncopators, BobSchulz’s Frisco Jazz Band, the WestEnd Jazz Band, Ernie Carson’s CapitalCity Jazz Band and the Red RoseRagtime Band.

Wayne Jones was Turk Murphy’sfavorite drummer, and though he neverworked full-time with the band, he didp lay wi th the band on spec ia loccasions, including a concert at GraceCathedral in San Francisco and aconcert at Carnegie Hall, just prior toMurphy’s death.

In addit ion to his work withTraditional groups, Jones also playedbig band music with the ChicagoFootwarmers and small-band swingwith James Dapogny’s Chicago JazzBand, the Neo-Passe’ Jazz Band,Soprano Summit and the Hedges-DeMichael Swingtet. San Diego JazzFestival attendees heard Jones in yearspast with the West End Jazz Band,James Dapogny’s Chicago Jazz Bandand Bob Schulz’s Frisco Jazz Band.Besides his skill as a drummer, he wasan excellent writer, whose reviewsappeared in Down Beat, Coda andMississippi Rag.

Wayne Jones is survived by his

PASSINGS

with Lu Watters’ Yerba Buena JazzBand at Hambone Kelly’s and alsotook part in an early recording sessionwith ex-Yerba Buena trumpeter BobScobey. (The session was originallyissued on the Jazz Man label as“Darnell Howard and his FriscoFootwarmers”). Howard also playedoccasional sessions with the othermember of the Yerba Buena triumvirate— Turk Murphy. A trip back to theMidwest resulted in a number of gigswith a young ensemble that wouldeventually become one of the greatestof all Traditional Jazz bands — TheSalty Dogs. Hearing Darnell Howardwith the Salty Dogs made a lastingimpression on a young Chicagoclarinetist who would eventuallybecome the Dogs’ regular reedman —Kim Cusack.

After returning to San Francisco,Howard settled in for a long stay at

Club Hangover with a six-piece bandled by his old colleague Earl Hines. The years in the Bay Area weremusically rewarding for the middle-aged Darnell Howard. Besides thesteady work with Hines, he freelancedon record dates with Kid Ory, BarbaraDane, Don Ewell and others. TheEwell sessions, recorded for GoodTime Jazz, featured Howard as theonly horn with Ewell on piano, MinorHall on drums and (on several cuts)Pops Foster on bass. Unsurprisingly, this was some of Howard’s bestplaying on record. “South Side Strut”and “Bush Street Scramble” illustratehis swinging phrasing and his abilityto go from a bubbling penultimatechorus to a boiling rideout. “Love MeOr Leave Me” and “Am I Blue”showcase his thick, blurry tone in thelow register as well as the joyous, unexpected whoops into the upperregister.

Howard was once again freelancingin 1964, when he met the young pianistRay Skjelbred. Skjelbred was astudent of Johnny Wittwer and BurtBales, both acquaintances of Howard, and was fascinated by the music ofpianist Joe Sullivan, who had playedintermissions at Club Hangover whenHoward played there with Earl Hines.Once, Skjelbred and Howard went tohear Sullivan play intermissions atTurk Murphy’s nightclub EarthquakeMcGoon’s. When the band returnedto the stage, Sullivan climbed the stairsto the balcony with a drink in eachhand. Howard observed, “He’s good— unless he plays nose piano,”drooping h i s head to ind ica teSullivan’s condition after too manydouble highballs.

Skjelbred took Howard to visitmany friends in the Bay Area and wasfortunate to play a couple of sessionswith the clarinetist during the summerof 1964. Once he asked what wouldhappen if someone called Howard toplay a gig on violin. Howard replied,“You’d see such scrambl in’ ! ”Apparently he “scrambled” at leastonce during this time period. Jazzauthor Richard Hadlock recalledhearing Howard on violin, with ElmerSnowden on banjo and Pops Foster

wife, Charlotte. His drum style hasbeen a major inspiration to this writer, and also to several drummers whosenames should be familiar to readers ofthe Jazz Rambler including ChrisTyle, John Gill, Steve Apple, KevinDorn, Clint Baker and Ray Templin.

Jones made numerous recordingswhich were i s sued on GHB ,Jazzology, Stomp Off, Delmark andDiscovery. Most are available on CDand are definitely worth seeking out— especially to hear the masterfuldrumming!
