Have you ever looked at a sculpture and wondered, “How did the artist do that?” In this four week class, students will learn how to create a likeness in clay using a portrait model as our subject. As they sculpt, students will explore ways of creating a variety of moods. There will be instructor demonstrations, including a demonstration of how to capture facial expressions. There will be additional demo’s and discussion on finishing your sculpture and applying cold patinas on fired clay, and simple mold making techniques will be discussed.

Each week Judith will demonstrate in oil and/or pastel, identifying basic painting techniques such as shape, edges, composition, and perspective in her own unique style of painting. With the use of photographs, Judith will impress the importance of painting what you SEE, not what you think you know. Students will learn to apply these techniques to then build their own styles while improving their individual expertise. Group discussion, individual instruction, and q&a periods will be part of this class. www.judithspitz.com

WEEKLYMost open studios provide students a limited amount of time to successfully complete a head study. Professional illustrator and artist, Jerry Salinas, will provide students with a variety of training techniques to be able to create a convincing head study. This course will investigate the individual forms of the head and more importantly how to make them come together in an integrated whole. Students will learn to use an approach that helps them see the big shapes first, then go into details towards the end of the session. The core of the lessons will be based on drawing, values, edges, planes of the head and composition. Bring your chosen medium. If you are new to working from life, start with drawing. Previous study helpful, but not required. www.salinasart.com

One of the most challenging aspects of landscape painting is establishing a “center of interest”, or “focal point”. Abstract design must be understood and utilized in order to create a dominant point of interest, no matter how representational the painting is meant to be. Therefore, our focus will be combining abstract design with realism for a stronger composition. There will be demos, exercises, critique and lots of painting time.www.juliegilbertpollard.com

WEEKLYHave you ever wanted to be able to draw? “Being a good draftsman” means being able to accurately reproduce what you see onto paper. This is a technical facility which can be learned with practice and attention. Being a good draftsman is a vitally important skill for a representational artist.

We’ll explore several ways to draw in this four-week class and introduce important concepts, including: how to use basic drawing tools; contour, light and shadow and the illusion of 3 dimensionality; copying drawings “from the flat”; drawing from 3-dimensional simple geometric shapes (cube, cylinder, sphere etc) using a single light source; drawing a still life;drawing people, including the basics of drawing the human head or the figure. The focus will be on developing each student’s skills, although I will occasionally demonstrate. www.lindatraceybrandon.com

Unlike most other subjects, the still life offers the artist complete control over every aspect of the final painting. Unlimited choices of color, key, arrangement and lighting of one’s subject make still life one of the most popular genres. Design begins with a concept and ends in an arrangement of elements and lighting which is then painted. Through demonstration, lecture and individualized instruction, students will be offered guidance composing, lighting and painting their subject. This class is suitable for all levels of experience as students compose and paint their own arrangements in an alla prima fashion (paintings which are painted in a single painting session).www.robertlemler.com The Alla Prima Still Life

Painting portraits can be intimidating to say the least, but I want to show you how to let go of that fear! In this class you will need some drawing skills behind you to get good contour drawings for your paintings. From there I will show you how to cross those lines to get good connecting shapes to your backgrounds and your subjects. We will concentrate on composition, the use of color, lights and darks, and where to use soft and hard edges.

You should have some experience with watercolor and drawing to experience the full benefits of this class. www.kj-art.com

Each artist’s brush stroke is as individual as his or her own signature. These signature techniques are developed through experimentation and individual preference. The qualities of good drawing, exciting value ranges, interesting composition, appropriate color and unifying edge development combine to make paintings successful. This class will help you to learn and appreciate those essential painting elements and stir the creative process. www.billlundquistart.com

No experience is needed to participate in this class, only a desire to work in clay in a figurative format. If you have experience with clay, that’s great too. This class is designed to be a no stress experience. With both the portrait and the figure, we will concentrate on the fundamentals, including the proportions, the features, simple constructions and the expressive composition of the sculpture. Our goal with the portrait sculpture is to learn to attain a likeness of our subject in clay. The focus of the figurative sculpture is working with a live model and building an armature. We will then work with proportions of the human body and the expressive qualities of gestures. Students may work on any or all of these offerings, using the model as our reference.

Monsoon season brings monster cloud formations and ‘candystore’ colors to our desert skies. Dry winds stir up dust and cast a yellow aura around everything. Swaying palms sparkle against the dark banks of monsoon clouds. These seasonal conditions offer soft pastelists visual ref-erences to work on the following skills: layering hues, edge thinning and glazing; depth sensation, receding forms and fishbowl perspective; color combining and vibration; elements of value grouping and design principles of repeti-tion. Advanced students will be challenged and beginning students will feel comfortable with demonstrations, lively class discussions and personal attention. www.lizkenyon.com

The simple, abstract beauty of line, when combined with accurate values and thoughtful edges, is one of the most beautiful mediums of human expression. The aim of this course will be to give students both a sound understand-ing of how to become an excellent draftsman, and time to practice doing what they learn. We will cover: How to handle the medium of charcoal; Basic approaches, meth-ods, and skills fundamental to drawing from life; What makes things (especially drawings) beautiful. The bulk of class time will be spent working from life. Class time will also include demonstrations by the instructor, and individual student critiques. The format for this class will incorporate both morning and afternoon painting sessions, to take advantage of different lighting situations. There will be daily demonstrations by the instructor as well as one-on-one instruction out in the field. The emphasis will be drawing, color, value, edges and brush-work, in order to create a competent painting on location in a painterly fashion. The workshop will kick off with a short orientation meeting on Tuesday afternoon. There will be an optional evening painting session for those who wish to continue painting past the typical workshop hours. Painting the Grand Canyon in plein air is a grand experience, yet very challenging. This workshop requires hard work and dedication from each student. The course is designed to give the student complete focus on the canyon while learning what to select from its expansive view. Careful consideration has been taken to select prime painting locations suitable for this class. The daily schedule will be split into early morn-ing and late afternoon painting sessions, with break time in-between. This will allow the students’ working hours to be the richest and most dramatic times of day, while giving them some free time to explore the canyon. Demonstrations, as well as individual critiques and lecture will be given. Some outdoor painting experience is required.

Students participating in this workshop will have the added bonus of a lecture and walking tour with the Director of the Grand Canyon Field Institute, Mike Buchheit, who will help students get the most out of their experience at the Canyon. www.goochstudio.com
