SUMMERHILL BOWLING PAVILIONAND GROUNDS
Summerhill Bowling Club has been in existence since 1916. Inthe past it was the site of fiercely fought championships. Sadly,its membership dwindled and in 2010 it was forced to closeits doors. A group of neighbours decided to rescue the pavilionand green spaces and set about turning them into a resourcefor our community.
In order to support our work at the heart of the Summerhill community, we accommodate a limited number of wedding receptions every year.
Summerhill offers the beauty of a natural setting and the practicality of a city-centre location; a grand Georgian squarein a conservation area, just a short walk from Newcastle’s Central Station.
Frequented in years gone by by sporting legends like WGGrace, Len Shackleton and Jackie Milburn, who all playedbowls at the club, Summerhill retains a sense of history andnostalgia you’ll find hard not to love.

Our PhilosophyWe are not a traditional wedding venue. There are no packages,options or add-ons on offer. We don’t employ wedding co-ordinators or sales staff. Instead, we’ve learnt from the coupleswho’ve celebrated with us that the most important thing is foryou to be able to do your own thing. Our offer is simple: weprovide the pavilion and lawn, and we’ll open and staff the barfor you. The rest is up to you.
Your wedding, your way.
You can decorate and arrange the pavilion how you like. Youcan hire in a marquee if required, and choose your own caterers and entertainment. We will only charge you for venuehire and a corkage fee if you want to bring your own drinks.

Our pavilion has room for 120 people (or 75 people seated)and you can make the space your own. Built in 1937, thepavilion, recently renovated, retains a vintage charm with highceilings, beams, and masses of natural light. We’ve seen itstrewn with fairy lights, draped with bunting and filled withwildflowers.
We have a stage area for live bands or DJs, plenty of space fordancing and a great value bar including locally crafted beers.
Outside we have two beautiful greens each measuring 30m x30m, and a secret garden to explore. The lawns can be transformed into a village fete, mini festival or simply somewhere to take the drinks outside and relax.
If you want to pitch a marquee that’s no problem either. Wehave space for a 200 capacity marquee or teepee so you canparty the night away under cover. And as night falls, why notlight some fire pits and toast marshmallows?

CapacityThe indoor pavilion can hold 120 people, or 75 people seated.Outdoors there is space for a marquee holding up to 200 people seated.
Food and drink We have a small but well equipped catering kitchen availablefor you and your choice of caterers to use. We also have tablesand chairs and even a stock of vintage teacups and saucers. Ourlicensed bar serves a range of drinks including locally brewedbeer at very reasonable prices and our corkage charge is £5per bottle.
Entertainment We have a stage area and a sound system which you’re welcometo use for your choice of music, band or DJ.
CeremoniesWhile we don’t hold a wedding licence, we are happy to accommodate blessings and Humanist ceremonies.
LocationWe’re just a couple of minutes from Newcastle Central Stationand walking distance from the city centre, so your guests won’thave a difficult journey. There are plenty of options for accommodation nearby and a taxi from most parts of Newcastlewill cost just a few pounds.
ParkingThe car park makes it easy for suppliers to come and go asyou get ready for your wedding. And if you want an ice creamor pizza van then there’s space for that too!
Costs You can book the venue at a cost of £40 per hour for thepavilion and £20 per hour for the lawns. Alternatively, you canbook it for the entire weekend, from 12 noon on Friday to 12 noon on Sunday. The price for this is £2000 and includesboth the pavilion and the lawns. Additionally, there is a £200ground rent if you wish to erect a marquee on the lawn tocover grass maintenance costs.

The Friends of Summerhill, a registered charity and company limited by guarantee, was created in October2010 in response to the imminent closure and sale of the historic Summerhill Bowling Club in central Newcastle upon Tyne. The site was transferred in March 2011 to the Friends, whose ambition is to develop the greens and former clubhouse into a thriving community resource and who have now
taken on responsibility for their management and maintenance.
