~From the Desk of the Principal~
Greetings from Summerland Middle School,
Happy New Year to all of our SMS families.
The first four months of the school year have quickly passed and we begin January with the fresh
anticipation of a New Year and endless possibilities.
December featured our annual Winter Band Concert. Thanks to Mr. Lind and all of his hard
work with our your musicians. The new “coffee house” style was a big hit! It is wonderful to
see the amazing progress and skills our band students are developing. Under Mr. Lind’s
leadership, they are gaining both musical skills and a love of learning.
On behalf of the staff of Summerland Middle School, we wish all families a wonderful New year
and look forward to a great 2019.
Mr. Darcy Mullin
~From the Desk of the Vice Principal~
Happy New Year to all our Summerland families! I hope that your holidays were filled with
great times with family and friends.
As students return to school, it is time for reflection on the 2018 year and time to set new goals
for 2019. Many students started this process before the Winter Break as report cards were sent
out and Term 2 began. Although it is important to set academic goals, it is also important to set
personal goals. We held our first term Recognition Assembly on December 20th
and recognized
student accomplishments at all grade levels in Computers, Tech Ed and Home Ec. Art and
Drama students will be recognized later in the year. Congratulations to all students on a
successful first term! The students and staff also had the opportunity to participate in a few
games and a lot of fun was had by all!
We are all looking forward to a fantastic 2019!

Holiday Spirit At SMS
Three classes at Summerland Middle have taken on the task of sponsoring a family for
Christmas. Mrs. McElhinney and Ms. Hunter’s Grade 6 classes have been busy raising money
and purchasing gifts for needy families in the local area. Mrs. McElhinney’s grade 6’s held a
events to raise money to purchase gifts that had been requested by a local family. The students
have taken part in shopping online for the gifts, choosing the gifts they would like to purchase
and calculating the taxes on the item to ensure that they have enough money. Ms. Hunter’s Grade
6 class also set up a booth at the Summerland Light Up, where they sold hot chocolate, cookies
that the students had made and tree ornaments that the class had decorated. Over $700 was
raised on this night to go towards their family. Summerland Middle school students certainly
understand the meaning of giving back at Christmas!

SMS is Featured at WE Day
On November 22, Mrs. Manuel and Mrs. Burdock accompanied more than twenty students to
We Day in Vancouver. Throughout the year, Mrs. Manuel and other staff members sponsor the
WE club at SMS, preparing school wide fundraisers and activities for the school community. In
the spring of 2018, the WE sponsors helped the students organize a week long Survivor event for
the students. Money was raised as teams paid an entrance fee to reserve their team in the
challenge. At WE day on November 22, Evan Gupta, a Gr 9 student from Summerland
Secondary, presented to the audience in Vancouver about SMS’ experiences with the Survivor
week challenges. The WE group has arrived home from the event in Vancouver energized and
excited about their upcoming plans for the school and the students.
