Summer Associates come to Baker Hostetler to learn about the Firm and to get a sense of what it would be like to practice law here. We want our Summer Associates to be challenged by the work, enjoy their interaction with our lawyers and clients, and confi-dent that they made the right decision in beginning their legal careers with us.

We also recognize that it is equally important to listen and learn from our Summer Associates, who are an indispensable source of new and different insights into the Firm.

We asked our Summer Associates across the country to tell us—

What attracted you to Baker Hostetler for your summer program?

What kind of work have you done?

What stands out most in your mind about Baker Hostetler?

So here, in their own words, is an inside look at life at Baker Hostetler.

Washington, D.C.What attracted you to Baker Hostetler for your summer program?

“The accomplishments and experiences of Baker attorneys afford access to ‘movers and shakers’ not only from Washington, but all parts of the world. In just seven weeks, I traveled to Capitol Hill several times to observe lobbying meetings. I attended two separate fundraising breakfasts—one with a Con-gressman and one with a Senator—in Baker’s office. I went to a ‘networking breakfast’—hosted by the former Mayor and current city officials—with business leaders from across the Washington Area. I attended a luncheon recognizing the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe and met with a high level government officer at the South African Embassy. Someone from Baker even arranged for me to meet one-on-one with a Congressman from my home state on Capitol Hill. Those are opportunities that you simply do not get at other firms.”

What kind of work have you done? “The vast majority of the work that I have done has been stimulating and meaningful. There is no such thing as ‘busy work’ at Baker. For example, at one point in the summer, I was able to work directly with an Employment and Labor group partner in drafting a trial motion and much of my writing was used in the final product. I also drafted a memorandum that, after numerous revisions, was ultimately distributed to one of the Firm’s clients.”

What stands out most in your mind about Baker Hostetler?

“The work environment at Baker was collegial and comfortable. I developed friendships with not only the other summer associates, but also the full-time associates and even several partners—profes-sional and personal friendships which I intend to carry with me well into my career. In sum, my experience at Baker Hostetler has been enriching, valuable and—on many occasions—fun. Thank you for giving me this great opportunity many months ago. I hope that I have made a meaningful contribution to the Firm throughout my time here this summer.”

—Stephen Ball, Washington, D.C., Summer Associate, Harvard University

DenverWhat attracted you to Baker Hostetler for your summer program?

“As a journalist making a career transition to law, I was attracted to Baker Hostetler’s First Amendment media law practice. The Denver office turned out to be a good fit for me because it offers a national plat-form while maintaining the feel of a medium sized office.”

What kind of work have you done? “I’ve worked on mostly employment litigation projects this summer in a variety of contexts including OSHA, EEOC, and tort. I’ve also worked on complex commercial litigation, construction litigation,

family law, and some First Amendment law. I’ve researched and written several memos, an article for publication, a press release, an executive alert, and a stipulation in an arbitration proceeding. I have attended oral arguments at the Colorado Court of Appeals, and served as a witness to a will signing.”

What stands out most in your mind about Baker Hostetler? “I approached the summer with the expectation that I would be challenged. I wanted to get a sense of what life is really like as an associate at Baker. I have not been disappointed. The summer has been very busy. I’ve done real work for real clients, even billing out hours where appropriate. I have learned to juggle multiple projects with varying deadlines. I’ve gotten great feedback on my legal writing and analysis. I’ve seen growth in my skills during my short time here. The partners are friendly and approachable, and the associates have been extremely helpful. It’s been an excellent experience.”

ClevelandWhat attracted you to Baker Hostetler for your summer program?

“I had offers from eight law firms, including the biggest firm in the country. I was looking for a mid-size firm where I could do so-phisticated legal work. I found that here at Baker Hostetler. The work has been great, the people have been down-to-earth, and I have enjoyed the city and the suburb where I am staying.”

What kind of work have you done? “I have been working on six or seven projects, and it has been interesting, meaningful work. I worked for the National Labor Relations Board last summer and was pleased with the variety of work I have been involved in here. I’ve done some real estate and employment work. I have also been asked to write an article on workplace legal issues, and I am working on that. Since I have been encour-aged to explore other areas of law that interest me, I have approached partners in a number of practice areas and found them very receptive to providing me with work opportunities.”

What stands out most in your mind about Baker Hostetler? “I noticed during the interview process that Baker Hostetler took a little different approach from other law firms. They wanted to know me as a person – not just a legal resume. I was very glad to find the culture here is not focused on internal competition. We all pull for each other as a team. There is a big difference between internal competition and external competition.”

Other comments?“I’ve been proud to work here. I know I made the right choice.”

—Andrew Johnson, Cleveland Summer Associate, University of Virginia

New YorkWhat attracted you to Baker Hostetler for your summer program?

“There is no question that Summer Associates at Baker are treated like true associates from day one. Working with the Firm guarantees being surrounded by intelligent, thoughtful and highly competent attor-neys with a corresponding workload. Partners and associates alike demanded high-quality work product on sophisticated and complicated legal issues in a variety of areas.”

What kind of work have you done? “In one summer I was able to work on updating a commercial litigation treatise, a pro bono habeas peti-tion, major securities fraud litigation and investigations, corporate litigation, civil litigation related to 9/11 detainees, complicated issues of income tax law, and a trademark paper for a CLE presentation.”

What stands out most in your mind about Baker Hostetler?

“Even with a heavy workload, there was still plenty of time for fantastic Firm events every week in which the Summers really got to know the entire office. On the whole, the summer was an excellent opportunity to see what a real working experience will be like and to truly be part of the team.”

—Kendall Wangsgard, New York Summer Associate,

University of Virginia

ColumbusWhat attracted you to Baker Hostetler for your summer program?

“What I wanted most out of my summer experience was a place where I could receive work from a broad array of practice areas in order to narrow my wide-ranging interests. Additionally, I hoped for a summer experience that would be comparable to that of a young practicing attorney. The size of the Baker’s Co-lumbus office and the breadth of its practice areas made it the ideal choice to accomplish both of those goals. Furthermore, out of all the firms I interviewed with, Baker’s attorneys were the most approachable and its office atmosphere was the most congenial. I immediately felt at ease interacting with both new associates and senior partners. When I was offered a position in Baker’s summer program, I accepted it on the spot because I knew I wouldn’t receive an experience of the same caliber anywhere else.”

What kind of work have you done? “My summer projects have ranged from drafting pleadings that were filed with the Common Pleas Court, to preparing materials for a Employment and Labor Law seminar, to summarizing state health insurance statutes, to researching the taxation of income from covenants not to compete. Some projects have in-volved accompanying partners to client meetings. These substantive projects from a wide variety of practice areas have made for an enriching and engaging summer. The opportunity to put my law school knowledge to practical use has been extremely rewarding, and I have learned a great deal from the work itself.”

Other comments? “Baker’s summer program has met and exceeded all of my expectations in terms of the variety of projects, the substantive nature of the work, and interactions with attorneys, both inside the office and at Firm social events. I cannot recom-mend Baker Hostetler’s summer program highly enough.”

OrlandoWhat attracted you to Baker Hostetler for your summer program?

“Baker is a prestigious national firm with a medium sized office, which allows you to interact with al-most everyone who works at the Firm. I didn’t want to go to a huge firm where the attorneys wouldn’t even notice that you were there. Also, Orlando is my home town, and I liked the idea of coming back to Orlando to work.”

What kind of work have you done? “I did a critical dates list for an international restau-rant chain based in Hollywood, California, worked on two big employment cases involving Title VII and the Fair Labor Standards Act, timeshare and condo issues and a family law case involving custody of a minor child. Finally, I did a motion to dismiss for a contract claim against one of the world’s best known amusement parks.”

“Outside of assignments, I’ve attended a case management conference, attended the Orlando Venues Oversight Committee meeting where they discussed the progress on the new Magic arena and the pro-posed performing arts center. Also, I’ve attended lunch at the federal courthouse, and the judicial luncheon during the annual Florida Bar Convention at the Marriot World Center.”

What stands out most in your mind about Baker Hostetler? “This sounds cliché, but what stands out the most for me are the people that I’ve worked with this summer. Everyone has been very nice and welcomed me into the office by taking me to lunch, seeing a good number of attorneys at summer events, and associates inviting me to informal activities outside of work. I expected a larger law firm to be a very dry and formal environment, and that just doesn’t describe Baker at all.”

—Andy Layden, Orlando Summer Associate, University of Florida

Los AngelesWhat attracted you to Baker Hostetler for your summer program?

“What attracted me to Baker Hostetler was the opportunity to gain real experience in a wide variety of areas.”

What kind of work have you been involved in? “I began getting the hands-on experience promised from day one when I got to go to court with a partner. Since then, I have been involved in legal research in many different legal fields including employment law, class actions, real estate, environ-mental law, bankruptcy, and entertainment law. I have also had the opportunity to aid in drafting legal documents such as arbitration memorandums and a demurrer as well as the op-portunity to interact with clients and go to court again. I have learned a lot since starting my summer at Baker Hostetler.”

HoustonWhat attracted you to Baker Hostetler for your summer program?

“In preparing for OCI, I was immedi-ately impressed by Baker’s balance of size and prestige. I very much like the fact that Baker has a strong na-tional presence while the number of attorneys in the Houston office is not intimidating. After OCI and callbacks, it was absolutely the people at Baker.”

What kind of work have you done? “I did almost exclusively litigation work, but under that umbrella I had projects covering a wide array of subjects such as wills/estates, construction, automo-tive regulations, civil procedure, etc.”

What stands out most in your mind about Baker Hostetler?

“My experience at Baker was ideal. The people were genuine, the work was interesting, and the juxtaposition of those things created a stimulating and enjoyable environment.”

—Kristin Craig, Houston Summer Associate, The University of Texas, Austin

CincinnatiWhat attracted you to Baker Hostetler for your summer program?“When applying to summer programs, I was specifically interested in Baker’s Cincinnati office. I liked the idea of having the intimate, small office environment in Cincinnati, but with the resources and practice experience of a national law firm.”

What kind of work have you done? “Being the only summer associate in Cincinnati, I have been able to experience all the Firm has to offer. I have enjoyed the oppor-tunity to get to work in all areas of the law including healthcare, employment, business law and litigation.”

What stands out most in your mind about Baker Hostetler? “The vast experience and breadth of practice of the attorneys at Baker Hostetler has impressed me the most. I have been able to participate in preparations for litigation, negotiation and even large scale mediations.”

Office SpotlightD.C. Summers Look Beyond “Diversity” This summer, LEAP talked with Steve Ball (Harvard), Nina Liao (Minnesota), and Nicole Samu-els (University of Pennsylvania), to find out about their experiences as Summer Associates in the Washington, D.C., office of Baker Hostetler. As people of color, they also shared their insights into law firm diversity efforts. Here is what they said on diversity.

“Some people think that ‘diversity’ is people of different colors in a room. We think of it more as recognition of peoples’ accomplishments regardless of their color. We want to know that we were hired because of our achievements, not because we are minori-ties. I think that comes through at Baker Hostetler.“

Each went on to describe his or her experiences in our Washington, D.C., office during the summer of 2009.

Steve “When I was considering law firms for sum-mer, I thought about the fact that Baker Hostetler sent senior management to cam-pus to meet with us. I got the feeling that they look at the Firm as a team from top to bottom—everyone in it together. In the past I worked in the District Attorney’s Office in New York. I enjoyed it, but also liked the op-portunity to branch out into other areas of law that I found at Baker Hostetler.

“I was interested in working in govern-ment policy, and have had an opportunity to do that, as well as working in labor law. Labor law was not something that I had thought about, but given the opportunity to work with a partner here on a labor issue for a client, I found it interesting.”

Nicole “I have worked in general litigation as well as government policy. I have been involved in a mediation and settlement, antitrust

work, and helped with issues related to a client that is a household name. I went with a partner to visit the client and felt immersed in doing what a lawyer does every day.”

Nina “We went to visit an energy client with one

of the government pol-icy partners and heard the partner brief the cli-ent on how certain laws and legislation might impact the client. I was looking for a good work-life balance and found that at Baker Hostetler. I highly recommend this Firm. I learned more here in a short time than some students might learn in a year of law school.”

Steve “I haven’t heard any of my law school col-leagues say they got anything near the op-

portunities we got at Baker Hostetler. We went to lunch with the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, and Nicole met Attorney General Eric Holder. I mentioned that I was from De-troit, and next thing I knew, I was introduced to my Congressman from Michigan.”

Stephen Ball (Harvard University), Nina Liao (University of Minnesota), Nicole Samuels (University of Pennsylvania) with Hiring Partner, Ambassador Tom McDonald.
