Sumner County fce Happenings…

Heritage

The Hermitage club would like to give a big Thank YOU to Captain Brad Rowell from the Cottontown Fire Department. Captain Rowell provided a CPR class demonstration for adults and children to club members. If any other clubs are interested in this training, you may contact the Fire Department in Cottontown.

Oak Grove Neighbors

Oak Grove Neighbors donated twenty-four blankets to the Sumner County animal shelter. Theresa Allan presented a Cast Iron cooking workshop to the group.

Portland Homemakers Portland Homemakers learned that, “Any CPR, is better than No CPR,” especially when you encounter an adult unconscious. The group practiced on “Little Annie,” this product was purchased by the club and is available to share with other fce clubs as a Leader Lesson.

50th Year Members

If you have fce members who have served for over 50 years, applications for certificates are due this month at Extension Office.

“A Man Called Ove”

By Fredrik Backman

Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations. A feel-good story in the spirit of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand, Fredrik Backman’s novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others.

Discussion led by Judy Anderson Come and discuss. Thanks Judy for leading the book club in Theresa’s recovery absence.

June 5th

World Environment

Day

World Environment is celebrated each year on June 5th. It‘s major aim is to raise awareness on emerging environmental issues from marine pollution and global warming to sustainable consumption and wildlife crime. This year’s theme is “Connecting people to the environment”, it invites you to think about how we are part of nature and how intimately we depend on it. Take this opportunity to get outdoors and into nature. Why not organize a neighborhood clean-up, or plant a tree or build a garden.

Berry Smoothie

After you've made this Berry Smoothie once, you'll never need a recipe again to make it! Tasty nutrition is at your fingertips in minutes!

Ingredients

• Milk or fruit juice • Yogurt (any flavor) • Frozen fruit (for example:

berries, cherries, or sliced peaches)

For each smoothie, all you need to remember is: Add 1/2 cup of the above 3 ingredients with the liquid added to the blender first, followed by the yogurt and the berries added last. Blend until smooth; add more milk if you want a thinner smoothie or more frozen fruit for a thicker smoothie. If desired, sweeten with about a teaspoon of sugar or honey.

Oil & Vinegar Dressing

In Italy, the salad dressing often isn't mixed separately from the salad. Here are the basic "no recipe required" directions for making salad dressing with just 3 ingredients that are mixed—separately in 3 steps—directly into the salad. This method is very convenient if you're making a salad just for yourself and eating it right away. Plus, you are never left with half-used bottles of salad dressing lingering in your fridge.

Ingredients

(Use on plated salad of your choice)

• Vinegar (red wine vinegar works well)

• Oil (extra virgin olive oil) • Salt (if desired)

All you have to remember is: The basic ratio of vinegar to oil should be about 1 part vinegar to 3 parts oil. Begin by "eyeballing" amounts and mix in—gently—about 1 teaspoon vinegar with a fork and spoon. Follow by mixing in about 3 teaspoons oil. (TIP: It's handy to purchase your oil and vinegar in bottles from which small amounts can be drizzled amounts directly into your salad.) End by mixing in a dash of salt, if desired. Taste and adjust as needed. This amount should be sufficient for a 2-cup salad.

Berry Good Overnight Oatmeal

Imagine waking up to an already prepared, delicious (and nutritious!) breakfast of berries, oatmeal, milk and yogurt. After trying tasting this overnight oatmeal, you may make it a regular in your house!

Ingredients

• Oatmeal (old-fashioned or quick-cooking)

• Milk • Yogurt (any flavor) • Frozen or fresh berries

For each serving of overnight night meal, just remember: Add 1/2 cup each of these ingredients beginning with oatmeal. Follow with milk, then yogurt and end with berries.
