FUTURE PLANS

Use the perfect form of an infinitive to express that an action will or might take place before a specified time in the future.

By this time next week, I plan to have finished my research

paper.

Her goal is to have paid off all her debt in five years.

I expect to have graduated by the end of this year.

Express future plans with expect, hope, intend, or plan and an infinitive.

We hope to start putting some money away.

I don’t plan to be financially dependent for the rest of my

life.

I intend to get better grades this semester.

FUTURE CONTINUOUS

Remember that if the sentence has a time clause, use the simple present tense or present progressive in the time clause, not the future or future progressive.

CORRECT: I’ll be cooking while the robot is cleaning.

INCORRECT: I’ll be cooking while the robot will be cleaning.

We often use the future progressive to hint that we would like someone to do us a favor.

A: Will you be going by the post office tomorrow? B: Yes. Do you need stamps? A: Yes. Could you get me some?

Use the future progressive with be going to or will to talk about things that will be in progress at a specific time in the future.

Rob is going to be walking the dog at noon.

Rob will be walking the dog at noon.

FUTURE PERFECT

Use already and yet to emphasize whether an event will have happened by a point in time.

By May, he’ll have already saved $1,000. By May, he won’t have saved $2,000 yet.

Use by + time expression to identify the point in time in the future.

By August next year, she’ll have bought a new car.

She’ll have looked at a lot of cars by then.

When we use the future perfect, we imagine a certain point in time in the future, and we look back at events that will be completed by that time.

By June, he will have paid his debt. We won’t have saved enough by then.

FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS

Use the future perfect or the future perfect progressive with the simple present tеnsе to show the order of events: FIRST EVENT: Future perfect (progressive); SECOND EVENT: Simple present

By the time you arrive, I’ll have finished dinner.By the time you arrive, I’ll have been reading for almost an

hour.

The future perfect progressive focuses on how long and often includes the length of time.

You’ll have been speaking French for ten years by then.

When we use the future perfect progressive, we imagine a certain point in the future, and we look back on things already in progress.

We moved here in 1998. By next December we will have been living here for several years.

We’re moving to Paris next year. By 2018, we will have been living there for several years, and it should feel like home.
