MARCH 2016
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go!”
Dr. Seuss
Summit Park students kicked off the beginning of March with a weeklong celebration of reading in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday! Mrs. Herring, Mrs. Bondroff, and Ms. Tegeler planned fun activities which included special announcements each morning with “Seuss-ism’s” – inspirational quotes from many of Dr. Seuss’ works. Additionally, Mrs. Hiner is honoring “Music in Our Schools” month by having guest musicians from her band and orchestra play selections during morning announcements.
We are proud to announce some of the individual achievements from our students: Rachel S. won Summit Park’s 24 Challenge and will represent our school in the countywide competition later this month; Sadie R. has been selected as our 2016 Carson Scholar; Molly P. and Ranier D. have their art on display at the Walters Art Museum; and Nataly V.’s self-portrait will be on display along with a sculpture created by Ms. Schroeder’s class at the “State of the School’s” reception!! We have much to be proud of at Summit Park!
Last, but not least, Summit Park has begun planning for our 50th Anniversary celebration(s)!! In addition to several ‘in-school’ activities, we are also planning a celebration for former students and staff for Saturday, October 8, 2016. We will need assistance with planning, gathering photos and stories that span the past 50 years, and contacting SPES alumni! If you are interested in helping us, please contact Mrs. Rothman ([email protected]). More information is available on our dedicated Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/events/201195676905338/

If you have a child who has a birthday between 9/2/2011 and 9/1/2012, for the 2016-2017 school year and are interested in finding out more about the BCPS Prekindergarten (PreK) program, please call Mrs. Rogers at 410-887-1210 or email at [email protected]. Below are some facts you may find helpful in making a decision about the prekindergarten program.
What is the prekindergarten program? The Baltimore County Public Schools prekindergarten program provides learning experiences that address the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical needs of young children. All sessions are half-day and follow the same school year calendar as other grades.
Who is eligible for prekindergarten? Automatic eligibility for a prekindergarten program will occur when a child meets the age of entry guidelines and is at least one of the following:
• Is from an economically disadvantaged background (i.e., eligible for free or reduced-price meal program as established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture).
• Is homeless.• Has been identified through the IEP team process with the
development of an IEP as necessitating special education classroom instruction within a general education setting.
Where can I get more information about prekindergarten programs?Additional information can be obtained from your local elementary school, from the Baltimore County Public Schools Web site at http://www.bcps.org/offices/early_childhood/, or from the Baltimore County Public Schools Office of Early Childhood Programs at 443-809-4313.

The Maryland assessments are right around the corner and the children are preparing hard to do their best. As parents, we can help our children succeed by making sure they get plenty of rest (at least 10 hours) and eat a healthy breakfast. According to the American Diabetes Association, children who eat a healthy breakfast are more likely to:
• -Meet daily nutrient requirements• -Concentrate better• -Have better problem solving skills• -Be more alert and creative• -Miss fewer days of school
Practice a few relaxation techniques also if your child gets anxious before taking a test such as deep breathing and visualization exercises. Assessments can be a stressful time for children, so help them reach their potential.
*On another note: I am always looking for donations of used pants and boy’s underwear. Please send them to the nurse’s office!

If your address, home phone number, cell phone number, work phone number, or other emergency information changes, please notify the school office immediately. All changes should be made in writing, addressed to the school office, and signed by you. In the event of an address change, the school should be notified in writing within 10 days of the change. After notifying the school, updated proof of residency information will be required to be presented to the school office.
We ask that you comply with this request as it is important for the school to have the most up-to-date information concerning your children in the event of an emergency. Our automated call out system will send the message and/or text to the primary number listed in our database. Oftentimes parents wonder why they are not receiving these messages, however their cell phone number may have changed and we haven’t been notified. Please remember to keep all of your information current so that the school can effectively communicate important information to you.

Congratulations to Molly P. in 2nd grade and Rainier D. in 5th grade. Their art is on view now through March 13, 2016. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Also, Nataly V. in 3rd grade has a self-portrait that will be on display at the annual “State of the Schools” reception on March 23. Ms. Schroeder’s 3rd grade class helped create a sculpture for the event.
Target and Giant stores make donations to our school each year when parents choose Summit Park as their designated school. We recently received $791.93 from the Target Take Charge of Education rewards program! At the beginning of each school year, sign up for the Target Take Charge of Education program by calling 1-800-316-6142 or by visiting www.target.com/tcoe or an in-store kiosk. Our school ID # is 57744. Enroll at Giant Food using our School I.D. #01316. Remember, even if you designated last year, you must re-designate this year for our school to receive credit. The donations we receive will be used to continue bringing cultural assemblies to our students. Thank you for all you do to continually support our students.
