Glen CartwrightGlen is Creative Director at Beautiful Minds, soon to become the creative arm of Bloom digitalagency. He has won awards from all over theplace for all manner of work. He photographedhis friend Mr Ted on a recent night out in Leeds. He says “Well, not a lot to say about Mr Ted,apart from he is 6 foot tall, he’s nearly too big tofit in the Citroen C1. Has his own bedroom, andloves a pint with the lads in the local. He movedto Norfolk recently and now lives with my grand-daughter Kya. This photo is the only memoryI have left. If anyone knows a lonely femaleMs Ted who fancys a good night out pleasepass on her number.” The photo was shot withHisptamatic on iPhone.

Laurence CuttingLaurence has had an interesting and diversecareer. He spent time in the merchant navystudied at the Royal College had some shots usedon Grandstand credits amongst other things andhad numerous exhibitions both here and aroundthe world. He has taught at Brighton, St. Martins,Manchester and Harrogate colleges and hasrecently returned from Mongolia were he hasbeen working on a 7 year project. His shot of theracehorse after exercise was part of a series onthe Kentucky Derby. One of the guys washing thehorse down asked Laurence where he was from,Laurence replied England and explained whathe was doing, after a long pause the questionerlooked at his workmate and said “is that out ofstate?”. Later Laurence found out that many of thehorse workers came from small communities inthe Appalachian Mountains and had little idea of the outside world.

Roy MeiklejonRoy was made the Honorary President of BIPPthis year, as well as being chairman of the judgesfor this year’s SUN Awards 24. Roy has had along association with the Shot Up North since theearly days and is a great supporter through thesponsorship of Towergate Camerasure. Thisphoto of his daughter Jess outside Lincoln Cathedral was taken last January. The ducks in the picture are well known in Lincoln as they are always together when walking through the city. Even when busy with shoppers and tourists they never fail to take their evening stroll. Roy usually prefers his duck on a plate together with a nice glass of red wine.

Ellie Halls Schiadas Ellie is co-founder of Leeds Gallery where theSUN Awards 24 will be exhibited throughNovember and December this year. Leeds Galleryspecialises in Photography, Illustration andFine Art. Ellie studied at Central St. Martinscollege, becoming a freelance productiondesigner and art director before setting up theGallery. She runs a very successful life drawinggroup to keep her hand in. Her photograph wastaken at Brimham Rocks in 2008. “I like it becauseit kind of looks like a diving board and thatwhoever steps on it is going to dive into sometrees (!) There was another one which was of theactual rocks themselves, but when you zoom in it is blurry (bit of a shame)”.

Jonathan OakesJonathan is a well established photographer and has always been a frequent contributor to The SUN Awards. This image is one of his favourite portraits. He explains: “This was one of a series of a dozen different actors I shot over a day in London. I hired a selection of old picture frames as props. Oliver Bradshaw understood the idea straight away, his bemused but stoical lookpositioned in the corner of the ornate framebalanced the composition perfectly. I built a huge, cumbersome and probably very dangerous ring light just for the job, the flat shadowless light it gave brought out the gilt in the frames and put a weird highlight in the eyes. The results, published in a hardback book with contributions from 38 other photographers was both diverse and unique and I was really proud to have been involved.”

Dan WatkinsDan is the mastermind image refiner behindPapa Imaging. His expertise goes way back tothe glorious days of film. He is not merely a“Photoshoper” but will go to the greatest oflengths to make the image “better than anybodyexpected”. Dan’s image of his son’s blue plasticspade is almost an antidote to the images hedeals with on a daily basis. He says “I often seehundreds of beautiful ‘commercial’ images everyweek and after twenty plus years I know myperception is skewed. In some ways I’m numb tobrilliance. But that’s not as egotistic as it mightsound, because I work with great images every day; that’s what I expect and assume to see”.Thanks Dan where’s the bucket then?

Year on year the judges comment that the quality of entries in SUN gets better, and that’s what they are saying too about SUN MOTION 24. Here’s a summary of their responses to this year’s best Motion entries.

“Kerry Harrison had two films, both documentary style, arecharismatic. They both take a look at the ‘feeling’ of a personand allow their nature to come through and drive their film. Both films use appropriately chosen music which enhancesthe view of each subject. Interviewing people is a black art. It has been done well in both films. Both characters reveal themselves.

Sun Motion 2012. Winner Kerry Harrison – a film about Dean Kemp

There is empathy with the sculptor, Dean Kemp. The B/W is a good choice to strengthen the medium and interestingly, the B/W gives an edge which we feel sure is truthful.

There is joy in his other film printer Miriam Trent. Her delightfultalented and humorous personality shone through, which is a major part of a documentary film makers duty.

Both very watchable films. It was a very hard call between these two Kerry Harrison films for the final winner.

Mention too goes to three of the other entries.Tony Lendill’s ‘Swimwear’ is well put together advertisingcommercial and shows us the product. Though we would have liked to have seen a little more motivation in the models.Good commercial though !

Jay Place’s theatre thriller is well shot and lit, uses style well and gains much from the handheld camera work. It is well edited, shot in a great location and a good effort with the artists. We are looking forward to Jay developing more of his own style in the future, something that would make his work more unique. Good film though!

Top Tony Lendill’s ‘Swimwear’ ad. Centre Jay Place’s theatre thriller. Above Tony Lendill’s ‘Courage’.

Tony Lendill’s other entry, a ‘Martial Arts’ film, has a great ‘go’at an idea. The detail is well shot and the performances areinteresting. Its weakest element we felt was the story itself.Nevertheless an intriguing film.

Next year we hope to see greater confidence in using the DSLR’s capabilities, pushing its benefits of size, lens characteristics, and versatility so that they really shine.”

To mark SUN Award’s 25th Birthday we will not only bepresenting the 50 best images but also highlighting a groupof photographic images spanning the 25 years of SUN’sexistence. The combined photographs will form a much larger catalogue and exhibition at which there will be a series ofevents and seminars to celebrate our art and our businesses.

This retrospective of commissioned images will demonstrate some of the ways in which the production and use of pho-tography has changed over the years. This period has seen massive changes not only in the technology of image capture but also in the manner in which the images are used and dis-tributed unfortunately not always in the photographer’s favour. Some would argue that with the introduction of electronic retouching the levels of skill required from the photographer have been greatly reduced and devalued which has inevitably lead to a diminishing day rate but we know different.

The basics remain exactly the same the combination of light and lens are how it’s always been and the use of these elements still making the difference between one photographer and another

• We want you to send in your best images. Anything produced and used commercially within the last25 years will be eligible. • We hope to represent as broad a spectrum of work aspossible to document this period together with detailsof the use and manner of production. • Every image has a story behind it, and we want you to tellus those stories.

Here are a few images to help demonstrate the sort of thing we are looking for.

The first is from Robert Walker he says…

This un-retouched image was taken in 2000 for the agency Lowe Lintas. The simple message was a homing pigeon who couldn’t find his way home, he was missing his Weetabix! The Art Direction is clean and unpretentious and the one word headline is as succinct as they come.

Once we had decided how to get the bird to ‘hold’ the map, given they don’t have hands, the rest was quite straightforward.

In fact the hardest thing was getting the paving slabs up to my 1st floor studio a task I left to my able assistant Paul Moffat.

I had the pigeon stuffed minus wings with his head set at an inquiring angle. The eye was painted with an exaggerated pupil and left unfixed to enable positioning to camera. The taxider-mied bird was then sent to a model maker who I had worked with many times to build the hands in such a way that(hopefully) you don’t really question the mutation. He also made the miniature A-Z, binding a mini book with scaled down colour copies from a full size map. The book and hands were on a small rig which attached to the bird behind the book.

The armature which ran through the leg and foot just slipped into the crack in the pavement. I suggested adding the ‘Birds Eye View’ graphic, the ad was running as 48 and 96 sheet posters, so detail was everything.

However not everything went to plan. I had intended to create a dappled sunlight effect on the paving, so we washed the stone before leaving for the night.

The following day instead of clean dry slabs, they had all dried patchy and no amount of hairdryers would help. With pressing deadlines we went for a ‘after the rain’ effect instead!

The photograph and ad were selected for the 2001 SUN Awards and the 2001 D&AD Annual.

• Will we ever see the days of commitment to and respectfor image production in the same way and the subsequentbudgets again? Interestingly all these shots were capturedon film from the days when nearly all image manipulationhappened in camera and was invented and controlled bythe photographer. • With the fantastic advances in technology the situation has changed, image manipulation is now almost mandatory and freely available to everybody, we see good and bad examples of it everyday. Has this democratisation of image makingenhanced or devalued the photographer’s art? • Have the amazing benefits of internet communicationbeen hijacked by art directors and designers who try to direct shoots by email?

These and many more questions will be answered by you the photographers at the exhibitions of your commissioned images both film and digital, together with Seminars and Events we are planning to celebrate 25 years of SUN.

Look out for details.

The second group of images was part of a campaign shotby Doug Currie for Harry Hall who manufactured high qualityriding wear. There was a series of adverts and small postersall based round the strapline ‘Nothing looks better on a horse’. The images had to convey elegance and energy through athletic and artistic leaps preformed by members of Phoenix Dance Theatre in Leeds wearing the riding products we wereadvertising. Over the week before the shoot the dancersrehearsed the moves devised by the company’s artisticdirector wearing the horse’s heads that were made by the props department at Opera North and we painted up a huge canvas background the size of the studio to accommodate the action. The coming together of all this work over a 3 day shoot resulted in some wonderful shots and my great admiration for the physical efforts and dedication of the dancers in conveying the required energy with elegance time after time and really just looking so good.

Both these descriptions demonstrate just how large andspecialist the team of people involved in producing these shots was and inevitably how expensive such shots could be.
