The beneficial rains of Julyave helped fill up Elephant

Butte Lake a bit but our cur-ent drought still has a firm hold.

The latest statistics from the U.S

Army Corps of Engineers showwater levels continue to be very

    oor only 4.5% of capacity.

The entire lake and county ofSierra is still considered to be inan extreme drought but its veryslowly improving. The last timethe lake was this low, accordingto the Corps of Engineers, was

back in the early 60s. My boat-

ing friends say if you want totake a ride up there and rent aboat or jet ski, be very carefulwhere you drive. Its best to stayin the main channel where thedeeper water is located. Travel-ing outside the channel couldcost you a lot of repair to the

prop or boat itself. By the way,you can rent boats or jet skis athttp://www.sportsadventure.us/.There are discounts for you on-line as well.

The pictures below were is-sued courtesy of NASAs EarthObservatory. It shows Elephant

Butte in 1994 when it was nearlyfull compared to images justtaken in July, which shows thelake in its dismal state.

    Hopefully, this upcoming win-

ter will bring a good snowpackto southern Colorado and north-ern New Mexico. This is the areathat we get the beneficial run-offof water when the snow beginsto melt in the spring.

The early peek at the long-term weather computer modelsare now indicating that the mois-ture supply could be on the in-crease for next winter.

The 1st Armored Division Riders held their second annual run thisast August to benefit wounded warriors in the El Paso area. Darrell

Mond, chairman of the veteran's association, said that the run raised

bout $5000, most of which will go to the Fort Bliss Warrior Transi-on Battalion. The battalion serves injured soldiers heal and rehabili-

ate until they are ready to return to active duty or are discharged from

he Army. "They do alot for the soldiers including medical rehab and

lso recover mentally. They have counselors there that help the sol-

iers transition from a wartime preparedness to a garrison (non-active

    ecuperative) environment."

Mond explained that he himself is a veteran of the Army who

erved more than 14 years in the 3rd Armored Calvary. Although he

was medically discharged in 1993, it was a more than a decade before

e was diagnosed with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Mond

ecalls a plane crash he was in in 1980 in Korea. "It skidded over a

mile before it stopped. There were 17 fatalities that day." He says he

ets flashbacks and sees the kids and various people who he saw die.

When I was discharged in 1993, the Army didn't believe in PTSD, so

was a long time before it was diagnosed then treated. The soldiers

ow actually get treatment for it. As soon as it gets recognized, they

re identified and go through counseling."

Older veterans can still get treatment through the VA (Veteran's Ad-

ministration) now that they know of the condition and it's secondary

ersion which affects the soldier's family.

Mond stated that next year, he would like to focus in com-

letely on El Paso veterans and their families, no matter their age or

ervice branch. He explained that even when discharged with full ben-

fits, there is a lag between the time the soldier is discharged and theme they begin receiving benefits, which can range from months to

ometimes even years. He also revealed plans to do community work

with the veteran's homes and the homeless shelters this upcoming win-

er season. He jokes about his many activities with the 1st ADR,

When I began my rehab, the VA said I should get a hobby and not just

tay home. Well, this is my hobby!"

Mond would like to thank all the clubs who have made t

benefit run a success, and would especially like to thank CMA an

Seed of Abraham for helping out in the run and manning stations

    throughout the day.

It's interesting to see the by-tanders coming in and out of

Providence West - Children's Hos-pital front entrance when theemicircular driveway is packed

with chrome and leather, bikesnd bikers, all visiting the youngpatients during the Black Widow'snnual Candlelighters run. Theooks range from concern to al-

most fear, as if the hospital wasbeing invaded. Some people evenwalk near, stop, think about it,hink better of it, and finally turnround and walk away. The kidshe bikers visit, on the other hand,re all too ready to do a meet and

greet. Their parents even say theyget ready early to go see the big

bad bikers and their steel rides. This year, the two kids in atten-dance, Romina and Angel, attimes look like they will be over-whelmed with all the attention, with every biker in the place com-ing up for a handshake, a hug, agreeting or even a prayer.

The interesting mix of people ispar for the course for the annualBlack Widows Run for the Can-dlelighters of El Paso. As usual, registration is at Barnett's and thesecond stop is at the hospital's en-

trance driveway. Whichever pa-tients are able to come down fromthe children's oncology wardcome down with family and what-ever medical devices are needed.

Carlos Valenzuela holds hisdaughter's hands the entire time.Romina was diagnosed withleukemia in February and has

been there ever since, currentlyundergoing chemotherapy treat-ments. He says that she was ex-

cited that she was going to havevisitors and got ready right awayin the morning. "I know she does-n't look very emotional, but I cantell she's happy to see all the bik-ers, especially the lady riders. She's fascinated by the girls ridingtheir own bikes." Romina mostlychose girls bikes to take pictureswith. Carlos tells me that her

prognosis is good and is lookingforward to going and stayinghome soon.

Claudia looks after her son, AngelRascon, as he greets every biker inhe place. Angel is confined to a

wheelchair because the cancer hehad which started in his brain trav-lled down to his spine, effec-ively paralyzing him from the

From not having any hope at all,o seeing steady progress is

    great!", his mother beamed.

Marcos Arrieta knows and hasbenefitted from that kind ofprogress. Marcos first attendedthis run two years ago as an 18year old patient. Now in full re-mission from leukemia and aplas-tic anemia, Marcos has nowreturned to serve as a volunteer tohelp with the kids, and serve as anexample of how successful treat-ment can be. "Now that I'm serv-ing in this role, the joy is better. Itwas an amazing experience for the

bikers to come visit us when I washere as a patient. I know that peo-ple misjudge the bikers simply bythe way they look, but you can seethey all have a heart." When askedhow we was doing now, he simply

flashed a big smile and said,"Good!"

Ana Aburto is a ChildLife Spe-cialist at Providence. "It's an over-whelming thing to see. I was toldmaybe a hundred bikers wouldshow up (there were many manymore), but I think that was a lowestimation." We spoke about aconversation Marcos and I hadabout stereotypes and what she

thought about those stererotypes, the bikers and her patients. "It'spart of our job to teach not onlythe patients, but the general publicas well about the conditions of our

patients. As for the stereotypes, I

There is nothing wrong in un-eashing the daredevil biker

within you, but make sure youdo it with the right protective

gear. Biking can be an experi-ence of unbridled adrenalineush, however, it is foolish to ig-

nore the obvious danger it poseso the rider's life.

The right protective gear canprove to be a life saver in manyituations; the right helmet, rid-

ing jacket and boots are musthaves for every motorcyclist.

Start at the top and choose theright helmet. Don't focus on aparticular brand; try a varietyof helmets and find the onethat fits best. Theideal helmetshould grip thetop and sides

of your headas well thecheeks andjaw. Helmetsthat coverthe entireface are bet-ter than thehalf-shellkinds. It is not afashion accessory,so concentrate onquality and sturdi-ness rather than the

    style and colour.

Every warrior needs his armour;equip yourself with a protectiveriding jacket and pants. Leatherjackets are more than just a fash-ion statement. They protectagainst extreme weather and thematerial doesn't 'grab'. Basically,

leather will allow you to slide incase of an accident rather thantumble. Thus, it decreaseschances of injuring vital parts ofyour anatomy. Dririder jackets

are waterproof and comewith foam protection.

    Foam armourcomes in handy

Like the head, your feet are also

highly prone to injury while rid-ing. Put your best foot forwardwith high quality riding boots. While purchasing motorcycleboots, check if the sole is stiff asit prevents the rider from tippingover. It is also advisable to buyboots with some heel becausethey make it easier to get a holdon the motorcycle's pegs.

Leather should be the obvioumaterial of choice. Buy bootthat have extra padding in arcovering the calf, shin and anThis padding could be the onthing between you and a sevfoot. The fit is also of utmosportance, the boots shouldn'ttoo tight or loose. There shoube room for circulation, so lofor boots with some ventilati

The type of gear you purchasdepends heavily on the weathterrain and distance. If you asimply riding the bike to thestore downtown, you don't na full-fledged riding suit.
