A few weeks ago, my beautiful Persian cat, Sherazhad, died. She was 21 years old, and I was verylucky to have her unconditional love for my entire adult life. As I watched her health decline overthe last year, I had been preparing for dealing with her loss. Full of what I thought was grief, I tookher to the vet and I began to miss her even before she was gone. I was expecting an overwhelminganguish to envelop me for days and weeks to come — but it never did. As a result, I inadvertentlylearned the difference between “mourning” and “grief” — between what I could recognize in myheart and what I could control in my mind.

Though I was sad, I was curious about the lack of overwhelming grief and anguish. So I looked up“grief” in the dictionary. It is defined as “keen mental suffering or distress over affliction or loss; sharpsorrow; painful regret”. The key words that stuck out at me were “regret” and “suffering”. I didn’t feelregret, because Sherazhad had a very good, long, loving life. She was old and there was nothing

anybody could have done to save her. I wasn’t feeling the suffering because I chose tofocus my thoughts on the love and warmth we shared.

There is a Sanskrit expression that says “man is according to his mind”(Mana eva manushyanam). It is a major underpinning of yogic

teaching — in learning to control the mind, we learn that sufferingis simply a function of our mind reacting to our environment.

And through our yoga practice, we learn to open our heartsand breathe through grief; live and love while we can, with-out fearing death.

The last time I held Sherazhad, our 21 years together flashedthrough my mind. She was there for every peak and valleyover the years. Every day I stroked her soft fur, and shereturned the affection every time, without fail. It was like I waswatching a great film, or like reading a great book. And whenI read a great book, I don't become upset when it ends.Rather, I think to myself, “what a magnificent book … I’m glad I got to read that.” And I realized what a magnificent cat she was … and how grateful I was to have spent half my lifewith her.

Roar Away Stress With LionBy Allegra Gulino

How many people do you know who grind orgrit their teeth at night? Can you think of some-one who’s face resides in a perpetual frown?Anyone who has nervous habits such as finger-nail biting or pencil or gum chewing? Howabout someone whose occupation or lifestylerequires that they talk all day, or conversely, someone who cannot speak up for themselves?Maybe it’s you!

When we are tense, our face, jaw, tongue andmouth can pull all sorts of tricks which can sabo-tage the most earnest stress reduction effortsand disturb much needed sleep. We purse ourlips, frown with our mouths, clench teeth, clampour tongues to other parts of the mouth, pull oureyebrows down and together, narrow our eyesetc. All of these habits affect mood and ener-gy. To test this theory, try the following: clasp

your hands together, raise them overhead withstraight arms and lean back a little so the weightof the arms takes them further back. Feels good, right? Now try it with a frown on your face. Notso good.

Lion pose addresses facial tension in a very satis-fying and cathartic way. It improves circulationthroughout the face and releases tension fromthe jaw, tongue, cheeks, lips, eyes and brow aswell as allows for an explosive roar to undo frustration from repressing how we feel. Finallythere is the “leap” which fills the body with energy and excitement.

Lion involves a deep inhale followed by anexplosive exhale with simultaneous facial expres-sion requiring some coordination. You mightwant to practice different “lion face” elementsand roar separately at first. The upper face

Many of us are already familiar with yoga’spenchant to reduce stress. As beginners, we learn tools such as simple backbends torelieve tension in the upper back and neck,or pranayama to slow the heart rate, calmthe nervous system, or focus the mind. Stressis also regularly addressed in class by suchinstructions as not to compete with others, or move slowly with the breath, etc. These are wonderful and life-changing practices, however, there is one area of the body that frequently is tense and oftenneglected—the face.

involves starting with eyes closed and a neutralexpression and suddenly opening your eyes bigand rolling them up. The lower facial part beginswith mouth closed then explosively droppingyour jaw wide and sticking out your tongue asfar as you can and exhaling quickly. The “roar”is not a voiced “raauuwwr”, but rather anunvoiced, throaty “haaah” sound, similar to aheavy sigh. It should not make your throat sore.

There are several bodily postures in which topractice lion, but the most accessible is to sit ina chair with your feet flat on the floor andhands on your knees. When you are ready, curlyour fingers and make “claws” on your kneesand close your eyes. Allow your face to relax;visualize a lion. Then take in a deep and longbreath. On the exhale, bend forward at the hips

and quickly raise your claws overhead whilemaking your “lion face” and roar. Then return tositting quietly. If you like, practice a couplemore times with rests in between.

Once you are familiar with lion, be creative andmobile like a cat and make your own variationsin posture. As long as you feel safely groundedduring the “leap”, there is no wrong position topractice. Other positions are from sitting on yourheels to rising onto your knees with arms up,standing with bent knees and hands on kneesto straight legs and arms over head, or lying onyour back relaxed to slapping your hands intothe ground by your sides and tensing the wholebody.

Don’t be afraid to ROAR!

Teacher Feature – Fall 2007Meet Annette Hyde

What do you like most about yoga?Unlike many activities, yoga can be practicedby anyone. It doesn’t matter what age, genderor body type. I like the increased flexibility, strength, and calm that my practice has broughtme. It has also opened to me a world of lovingand accepting people.

When did you start practicing yoga?I began my yoga studies in 1999 after attendinga Baron Baptiste workshop at a local fitness con-vention (I’ve been a group fitness instructor since1996). One of my best friends talked me into tak-ing this three-hour workshop. The first time I didDownward Facing Dog, Baron said it looked“pretty good”. It grew from there. I startedpracticing at home and taking classes at thegyms where I worked. In the summer of 2001, I began classes at Health Advantage YogaCenter in Herndon. I have studied with myteacher, Doug Keller, since 2002.

What do you like about taking classes? It’s much more fun to practice yoga with agroup. I love the energy! My fellow students arewonderful people. I have a set time each weekto be a student and not a teacher. With Doug’sguidance, I’ve seen my practice grow andchange. Not only do I challenge my body, I alsochallenge my mind and spirit by letting go andallowing me to be me.

When did you decide to become a yogateacher?Immediately! I wanted to share what I learnedand experienced with others. I taught my firstyoga class at my gym on a Friday evening in

June 2001. I’m still teaching that class as well asfour others at the same gym and two at Sun andMoon in Fairfax. I graduated from the year longTeacher Training Program at Health Advantagewith Doug and Susan Van Nuys, its director, in2004. I’ve also completed Level 1 of the RadiantChild Yoga Program with Shakta Kaur Khalsa in2002 and YogaFit Kids with Stephanie Adams in2003. I was an original graduate of the DownDog Yoga Teaching Assistant Program inGeorgetown in 2004.

Who has influenced your teaching?Doug Keller has been the strongest influence onmy teaching with his work in yoga as therapy.I’ve also studied extensively with Todd Norian, oneof John Friend’s senior Anusara Yoga teachers.

What do you like about teaching yoga?I enjoy watching the changes happen in my stu-dents both physically and mentally. I love thesmiles they have on their faces when they havethe “Aha” moment after they have struggledwith parts of their practices.

What is your yoga philosophy?I believe yoga is a continuous journey that opensthe mind, strengthens the body, and frees thespirit to take on life’s opportunities and obstacles.

What’s your life like other than yoga?I still teach aquatic group fitness, strength train-ing, and kids fitness and yoga. My husband,Clint, and I will celebrate our 20th weddinganniversary October 31. We have two sons,Doug (21) and Joel (15), and two 15-month-oldcats, Raven and Serena.
