Director’s Message
A program Friday evening for all participants features four outstanding professional percussionists from Vancouver called Fringe Percussion. Their program should be very entertaining for all with a variety of sounds and textures that you typically don’t hear from percussionists.
Wind students get together as a group on Friday afternoon in what essentially is an opportunity to warm-up for the festival and meet fellow woodwind and brass students from across Western Canada. Band and jazz ensemble students spend all day Saturday in performance in the Grand Ballroom whilst the choir students have another mass choir rehearsal in preparation for the evening concert.
Saturday’s evening concert features the Vancouver Youth Choir conducted by Carrie Tennant. This group was a big hit at our Whistler Festival last year and not only are they singing for us, they are also acting as student assistants (well 15 of them anyway) and helping out with the festival. The choir and Carrie are well known throughout western Canada and it is a thrill to have them come out and perform for us.
We conclude the festival Sunday morning with a series of workshops for band and choir students alike as well as their Directors. Many thanks to our corporate sponsors – both Yamaha and Ludwig/Musser provide the instruments needed here in Sun Peaks., and it is no small task getting them here. Special thanks to St. John’s Music in Edmonton for their immense help. Several participating ensembles have also provided support through lending instruments, stands, amplification equipment et al – we couldn’t operate without your help.
Next year promises more great groups at our Cantando Festivals with the National Youth Band already booked as well as a phenomenal junior high band from Japan. We are also in the process of booking an outstanding professional choral group that should blow everyone away!! Our website (www.cantando.org) will keep you abreast of the latest news.

Welcome to the Sun Peaks Cantando Festival. Like other ski resorts in BC and Alberta, Sun Peaks has experienced one of its best year ever for tourists and ski buffs. We hope this extends to our festival as well this year! Part of the reason for the popularity of this festival is not only the great spot in the mountains, but a great crew of adjudicators, guest artists, clinicians, student assistants, equipment managers, and terrific team of administrative support. Sun Peaks is the smallest of our Cantando festivals and immediately follows the Edmonton festival held at the Winspear Centre and precedes the Whistler Festival by one week.
Choir students open the Festival Friday afternoon with performances in the Grand Hotel Ballroom. They meet in rehearsal as a mass choir on Friday evening – a great way to meet fellow singers and experience a new conductor and new repertoire.

Fringe PercussionFringe Percussion is an ensemble dedicated to presenting works from the contemporary Western art music and non-Western repertories. It strives to strengthen the voice of local composers and global musical traditions through innovative programming, artistic collaboration, and dedication to musical excellence.
The ensemble’s repertoire connects to the expressive cultural traditions of Bali, China, Cuba, Japan, Ghana, and India. Fringe Percussion recognizes the vitality, beauty, and artistry inherent to world musics, and wishes to bring them to wider audiences. In so doing, Fringe Percussion’s perspective is especially important. It communicates with many generations and many cultures, connecting well to the multifaceted, multicultural nature of the contemporary music scene.

Vancouver Youth ChoirThe Vancouver Youth Choir is the lower mainland’s newest choir for singers aged 15-23. Founded by Carrie Tennant, the Vancouver Youth Choir provides an opportunity for advanced singers to pursue challenging and eclectic music in a supportive and joyful environment. Artistry and authentic communication are the goals of this young choir, who present music from Fleet Foxes to Gyorgy Orban. The choir began its very first season fall of 2013, and at Christmas presented its first concert in collaboration with the VSO School of Music Children’s Choir. This spring, VYC participated in a private workshop with Rajaton (Finland), shared the stage in concerts with Kamiak Choirs (Seattle, WA), Glendora High School choirs (Glendora, CA), and Rhythm N’ Roots Choir, and collaborated with several local high school choirs in the lower mainland. In their second season, the Vancouver Youth Choir is excited to announce that they will be an Associate Choir of the Vancouver Chamber Choir. As an Associate Choir, VYC will perform in three concerts with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, including, in spring of 2015, the Faure Requiem at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver. VYC is thrilled to be participating in the Whistler Cantando Festival.

career as a music educator encompasses elementary through university levels.
Under Dr. Brock’s direction, the UNF Wind Symphony has performed at prestigious events and venues including the annual Upbeat Pink: A Musical Tribute to Breast Cancer Survivorship concert series in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic, the Florida Music Educators Association State Conference, Carnegie Hall, and Alice Tully Hall-Lincoln Center. Having been twice honored by the Alberta Provincial Government for his nationally recognized ensembles and contributions to music education throughout Canada, Dr. Brock was also included in the fifth edition of “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.” He has served as a guest conductor and clinician throughout the United States and Canada, including Japan and Israel. In 2006, he was acknowledged as a Distinguished Alumnus of Dickinson State University and as the UNF Gerson Yessin Professor (2010-12).
Dr. Brock has performed with a broad spectrum of internationally recognized organizations within the mediums of chamber music, jazz, wind band, theater, dance, and orchestra. He is a member of the College Band Directors National Association (state chair, 2003-2005), Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Beta Mu, National Association for Music Education, Florida Bandmasters Association, National Band Association, and the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles. A chapter contributor to the newly released GIA publication, The Art of Interpretation of Band Music, Dr. Brock continues to serve as a Research Associate and author for the instrumental music education series Teaching Music through Performance in Band, a series that now serves as a primary text in more than 300 universities in the United States and 20 countries.

Brock is Professor of Music and Director of Bands at the University of North Florida’s Music Flagship Program in Jacksonville, Florida, where he conducts the Wind Symphony, instructs courses in conducting and woodwind performance and coordinates the UNF Conducting Symposium. Christin Reardon MacLellan (Concert Band)
maintains an active schedule as an in-demand clinician, guest conductor, adjudicator, and guest speaker. Christin has presented workshops and her research at numerous conferences and symposia in Canada and the United States, including the recent Canadian Music Educators Association National Conference. As President of the Coalition for Music Education in BC, she works closely with teachers, community members, and arts organizations to protect, promote, and advance music education in BC schools.
Christin has taught band, choir, and general music in the public schools of Manitoba.Christin earned her masters degree and is currently pursuing her doctorate in music education from Indiana University, where she has taught courses in music education and served as a university supervisor for music education student teachers.
Christin Reardon MacLellan is the director of UBC Concert Winds. A dedicated music educator, she is also the Education & Community Programs Manager for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, where she develops, implements, and oversees a wide variety of educational programming for individuals of all ages, including the Vancouver Symphony Orchestral Institute at Whistler.
Christin is dedicated to supporting and advocating for quality music education in schools. She directs the Greater Vancouver Youth Music Academy (GVYMA) Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and
2009), Southeast Asian Youth Wind Ensemble (2001, 2002), WASBE International Youth Wind Orchestra (2005), and also a fellowship with the ASEAN Youth Culture Camp (2001). During 2007-2010, Chee Meng served as the Assistant Communications and Planning Manager for the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, developing the education & outreach programs, as well as implementing the daily operations of the orchestra. In addition to that, he also served as one of the saxophone instructors for the College of Music, Mahidol University, coaching private lessons, saxophone quartet and saxophone ensemble and serving the College as assistant to the Deputy Director for Academic and Research Affairs.
A recipient of the University of Alberta FS Chia Doctoral Scholarship, Chee Meng holds a Doctoral of Musical Arts degree from the University of Alberta Canada, under the guidance of William Street (saxophone) and Dennis Prime (conducting). While working on his degree, Chee Meng taught Band Technique and Aural Skills courses at the University of Alberta and served as the Graduate Teaching Assistant for the saxophone ensemble, symphonic wind ensemble, and concert band.
Chee Meng Low (Concert Band)Chee Meng Low, a native of Malaysia, is the director of the University of Lethbridge Wind Orchestra, as well as the instructor of saxophone and musicianship skills. He is also involved with the Symphonic Winds of NSO Malaysia, UofL Faculty Wind Sextet, Edmonton Saxophone Quartet, and has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in Canada, Europe and Asia. released a self titled CD in 2001. Craig has appeared with almost every jazz musician and jazz group in Edmonton, including the Tommy Banks Big Band, latin group Bomba!, and groups outside of Edmonton, including the Bob Brookmeyer Big Band, Jim McNeely Big Band, the Gunther Schuller Jazz Orchestra and the Hugh Frazer Orchestra.
Trombonist, composer and educator Craig Brenan has been an active performer throughout Canada. A graduate of the New England Conservatory where he received his Master’s degree in Jazz Performance, Craig has had the opportunity to work and study with George Russell, Slide Hampton, Bob Brookmeyer, Danilo Perez, George Garzone, Jerry Bergonzi and Marty Ehrlich. Craig Brenan is also the first trombonist in Canada to perform with a complex system of digital harmonizers and looping devices, creating a new sound for the trombone. Craig is a member of the Modo Trio which

worked as the assistant conductor to Diane Loomer, and in that role, conducted Chor Leoni in several major performances. In January of 2013 Carrie was selected to succeed Diane as Artistic Director of EnChor.
Currently, on top of her work with Vancouver Youth Choir and EnChor, Carrie is the conductor of the award-winning Coastal Sound Youth Choir, and Associate Artistic Director of Coastal Sound Music Academy. Under Carrie’s direction, Coastal Sound has been featured on CBC Radio, and this summer will be the subject of documentary for Telus Optik TV. Repeated award winners at the National Music Festival, in 2013 Coastal Sound was awarded first place in the youth choir category at the ACCC National Competition for Amateur Choirs, and was chosen, along with Elektra Women’s Choir, to represent Canada at the 2013 Chorus America Conference. In 2013, Carrie founded the Vancouver Youth Choir. This season, the choir will be an Associate Choir of the Vancouver Chamber Choir and will perform with them at three season concerts.
Carrie is an Affliate Conductor with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, an Artist-in-Residence with the Vancouver School Board, and is a frequent clinician, adjudicator and retreat facilitator across Canada.
Carrie also tours, performs and records as a member of Vancouver-based indie-pop group, the Salteens (Boompa Records).
Carrie Tennant is the Artistic Director and founder of the Vancouver Youth Choir. Carrie began her career as a high school choir, building a nationally recognized choral program at Maple Ridge Secondary School before deciding to pursue graduate studies in choral conducting in 2009. From 2009-2012 Carrie directed the Vancouver Chor Leoni MYVoice Choir and the Sarah McLachlan Youth Choir. In 2012, Carrie

Adam Con (Choral)
Dr. Con is the newly appointed Assistant Professor of Music at University of Victoria School of Music. His duties include teaching Elementary Music Methods, Music Education Foundations, Choral Conducting, Choral Organization, Rehearsal Techniques and Literature, Middle and Elementary School choir methods, conducting the UVic Chorus and supervising music education students. He served in similar capacities as Director of Choral Activities and Chair of Music Education at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at the California State University, Long Beach, at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio and at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia. Dr. Con earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education (Secondary Instrumental and Choral) and a Master’s Degree in Music Education (Elementary) from the University of British Columbia. At Florida State University, he earned a Doctorate of Philosophy in Music Education (Choral Conducting Emphasis) studying with Rodney Eichenberger, Andre Thomas, Clifford Madsen and Judy Bowers. In addition, Dr. Con is a certified Orff Schulwerk specialist and has extensive study experience as an Alexander Technique practitioner.
In high demand in the United States and Canada both as a guest conductor and choral conducting teacher, Dr. Con has been invited to present and conduct at prestigious events such as the National American Orff-Schulwerk Conference, the Canadian National Choral Conducting Symposium, the Canadian National GALA Conference, the National Canadian Orff-Schulwerk Conference, the Alberta Provincial Music Educator’s Conference, the British Columbia Provincial Music Educator’s Conference, the British Columbia Choral Federation, the Ohio State Music Educator’s Conference, the Georgia State American Choral Directors Association Conference, and the Georgia Music Educator’s Conference. His talent and ability to work with all levels of musical experience is grounded in 15 years of diverse K-12 public school music teaching which includes Orff, Kodály, and Dalcroze based general music, French immersion music, middle and secondary school choral, vocal jazz, concert band and jazz band. His professional conducting experiences include numerous All-State and honor choirs, civic orchestras, professional musical theatre, community choirs, concert bands, and 36 years as a church choir director and organist. He currently serves as Director of Music at St. Barnabas Anglican Church, Victoria.
Dr. Adam Jonathan Con is a conductor, a visionary, a respected teacher of choral conducting and Tai Chi Chuan, and a leader in the advocacy of music education. A native of Vancouver and a third generation Chinese Canadian, his holistic approach to choral music through a unique blend of kinesthetic whole body movement and Eastern philosophy continues to inspire singers of all ages in mind, body and spirit. His motto is “Music is more than notes in motion; music is notes in Emotion.”
