Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday SaturdayDear Crusader Parents and Families, On behalf
of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, I would like to welcome you to the Crusader family. As a parent of a Crusader, you are now an extended member of our family. We hope that you will visit often and experience what it means to be a part of this community. I know there are many choices when it comes to education, and I am thrilled that your son or daughter has chosen UMHB to further his or her education. Thank you for trusting us with your student. I assure you, we take the responsibility very seriously. Our goal is to offer the finest in Christian higher education. We have a faculty and staff who care about our students and are dedicated to ensuring that they are prepared for leadership, service, and faith-informed discernment in a global society. Academic excellence, personal attention, broad-based scholarship, and a commitment to a Baptist vision for education distinguish our Christ-centered learning community.
It is my hope that your son or daughter comes to love UMHB and feels that they have found a home away from home. Welcome to the UMHB family.Go Cru!

JULYTips for staying in touch:Talk to your student ahead of time about how and how often you will communicate. Let them suggest a day of the week and time for a regular call or video chat. By making a communication plan, you’ll be sure to touch base regularly while still giving your student space to adjust to their new routine.
Move-In:Confirm your family’s travel plans and the move-in date, time, and procedure. Your student can coordinate with the roommate(s) about what to bring. Remind them to pack light and label all of their boxes. They can always buy or bring more stuff later.

AUGFinding a place on campus:Joining teams and organizations is a great way for students to make friends and build a connection to their new community. They can pursue existing interests or try something new. In general, engaged students are happier – and get better grades, too!
Keeping peace with roommates:Encourage your student to talk to their roommate(s) early to establish expectations about cleaning, guests, noise, etc. Communication and compromise will prevent minor conflicts from turning into bigger ones. It’s also good to get to know the RA (Resident Assistant). RA’s are there to help!

Adjusting to college-level work:College academics are a lot harder than high school and your student may struggle at first. Encourage them to participate in every class and participate in study/review sessions as well as their professors’ office hours. Encourage them to reach out to their SSC (Student Success Coordinator) for resources.
SEPTHow to help a homesick student:Remember that, even though it hurts, homesickness is normal. Settling in takes time.Be a sounding board – listen and ask questions.Don’t panic over every call or text. Your student may just need to vent after a hard day.Encourage your student to check out residence hall and campus activities.

Time to renew financial aid:The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is starting October 1st. Students renewing aid, or applying for the first time, must complete this each year. If your student needs help filling this out, encourage them to stop by the Financial Aid office for assistance.
Your student’s academic advisor:Students are required to meet with their advisor each semester before registration. In addition to course selection, advisors can help your student set long-term academic goals and stay on track to an on-time graduation. Your student should make the most of this important relationship!

Finding a healthy routine:Have regular conversations with your student about health and wellness. Sleep is key and most students don’t get enough. Regular exercise is also essential to physical and mental health for managing stress. Remind your student to pile on the veggies in the dining hall, keep healthy snacks on hand, and steer clear of fast food and too much caffeine.
Preparing for finals:Encourage your student to look ahead at their final exams and start making a study plan that begins two weeks before finals. Doing this early will help relieve some stress right before exams. Also, encourage them to visit the Center for Academic Excellence for study tips and finals preparation.NOV

Catching up:As happy as you may be to have your student home for a few weeks, it’s common for families to find they need to make a series of adjustments to fit their college student back into the household. And remember, they’ll probably sleep a lot as they try to “catch up” on lost sleep from the semester!
Student Finances:The budget that was set in August might be out of control by December. Encourage your student to spend some time looking over their spending and adjusting their budget for next semester.DEC

A fresh start: The first semester of college can be much more academically demanding than students expect. Remind your student that the second semester is a chance for a new beginning. Encourage them to set goals and take action.
Safety:Safety is one of the greatest concerns parents have for their student. Regular reminders help students remember to secure their belongings, avoid leaving items unattended, and locking their doors. University Police are always here to help. JAN

Student Relationships:College relationships are a marker for a successful adjustment. While your student may be staying connected to high school friends, you want to make sure that they are getting connected and building relationships on campus as well. Encourage your student to stick around campus for the weekend and get involved.
Time Management:College students are busy. Your student might have found this out the hard way their first semester. Taking control of their “schedule” is a great way to balance academics and social life. Encourage your student to visit the Center for Academic Excellence for help with their time management skills.

Spring Break:Spring Break is a great time for your student to unplug and recharge before the final push of the semester. While most people picture parties and vacations, Spring Break can be an opportunity for Mission Trips, spending time at home with family, or even getting ahead on their school work. Talk with your student about health and safety and encourage them to be safe and responsible.
Looking ahead:Your student’s first year of college is coming to a close. Meeting with their academic advisors each semester is an opportunity for students to not only talk about their upcoming classes, but to look past college at the different career opportunities waiting for them. Encourage your student to start these discussions now and check out Career Services.

Motivation:Spring is in the air and lost of events take place on campus. While these events are put in place for students to enjoy these can also make it hard for your student to stay academically focused. Encourage your student to participate in the different events but also make time for their studies. Create a game plan to finish out this semester.
Listen:April is a time of stress for many students as they near the end of the semester and approach finals. Listen to your student, and clarify what they need from you as a family member. Sometimes they may need someone to vent to, and other times they need advice. This is also a great time to send a care package to your student to help them prepare for those final exams.

Summer Plans:If your student is not employed during the summer, have them consider taking a class or two. Students may have feelings of anxiety attached to the idea of going home for the summer and losing their new-found sense of freedom. It is important to have discussions about what life will be like back in the house and set clear expectations.
Now What?Your student just completed their first academic year as a college student. It’s time to celebrate your student! Congratulate them on their hard work this year. Encourage them to enjoy some time to destress before they pre-pare for another school year.

Missing UMHB:Try not to take it personally if your student misses UMHB. Just as they missed you when they came to college, they will also miss their new friends while they are home. Don’t be surprised if you get visitors during the summer or if your student wants to visit a friend.
Continued support:Be prepared to support your student through the next academic year. Some students experience what we call the “sophomore slump”, marked by reduced motivation and declining academic performance. The “newness” has worn off and reality hits, leaving students feeling as if UMHB is not as supportive as in the first year and the curriculum seems to get harder. Preparing for these before the next semester begins can have a positive impact on your student and get them started on the right track.
