A wing of a 12-story beach-front condo building col-lapsed with a roar in atown outside Miami earlyThursday, killing at leastone person and trappingresidents in rubble andtwisted metal.Rescuers pulled dozens ofsurvivors from the towerduring the morning and con-tinued to look for more.Surfside Mayor CharlesBurkett warned that thedeath toll was likely to rise, saying the building managertold him the tower was quitefull at the time of the col-lapse around 1:30 a.m., butthe exact number of people

present was unclear."The building is literallypancaked," Burkett said."That is heartbreaking be-cause it doesn't mean, to me,that we are going to be as suc-cessful as we wanted to be infinding people alive." Author-ities did not say what mayhave caused the collapse.Work was being done on thebuilding's roof, but Burkettsaid he did not see how thatcould have been the cause.About half of the build-ing's roughly 130 units wereaffected, Miami-Dade Coun-ty Mayor Daniella LevineCava told a news conference.Rescuers pulled at least 35people from the wreckage bymid-morning, and heavy

equipment was beingbrought in to help stabilizethe structure to give themmore access, Raide Jadallahof Miami-Dade Fire and Res-cue said.Sally Heyman, of the Mia-mi-Dade Board of CountyCommissioners, said that 51people who were thought tobe in the building at the timeof the collapse were unac-counted for by mid-morning- but there was a possibilitythat some weren't at home. The tower has a mix of sea-sonal and year-round resi-dents, and while the buildingkeeps a log of guests staying,it does not keep track ofwhen owners are in resi-dence, Burkett said.

Hundreds of unmarkedgraves have been foundnear a former Catholic res-idential school for Indige-nous children in westernCanada, local media report-ed late on Wednesday, weeks after the discovery ofthe remains of hundreds ofIndigenous schoolchildrensent shock waves throughthe country. In a statement quoted byseveral Canadian media, in-cluding CBC and CTV, theIndigenous Cowessess com-munity said on Wednesdayit had made “the horrificand shocking discovery ofhundreds of unmarked

graves” during excavationsat the former Marievalboarding school.“The number of un-marked graves will be themost significantly substan-tial to date in Canada,” thestatement from theCowessess First Nation andthe Federation of SovereignIndigenous First Nations

(FSIN), which representsSaskatchewan’s First Na-tions, said.Last month, the remainsof 215 children, some asyoung as three years old, were found buried on thesite of what was once Cana-da’s largest Indigenous res-idential school near Kam-loops, British Columbia.

The new find was made atthe Marieval Indian Resi-dential School, which oper-ated from 1899 to 1997 whereCowessess is now located, about 140km (87 miles) eastof Regina, the capital ofSaskatchewan. After the discovery of theremains in British Colum-bia, excavations were un-dertaken near several for-mer schools for Indigenouschildren across Canada, with the assistance of gov-ernment authorities. The Marieval residentialschool in easternSaskatchewan hosted In-digenous children between1899 and 1997 before beingdemolished and replaced bya day school.

Some foreign guest workersin the US will be able to re-submit their applications forthe H1-B visa, the mostsought-after non-immigrantvisa among Indian IT profes-sionals, if their petition wassolely rejected because itwas based on the initial reg-istration period, accordingto a federal agency.According to the US Citi-zenship and ImmigrationServices (USCIS), such re-submission of applications isfor those whose applicationshave been rejected or admin-istratively closed solely be-cause the requested start date

was after October 1, 2020. TheH-1B visa allows US compa-nies to employ foreign work-ers in speciality occupationsthat require theoretical ortechnical expertise. Technolo-gy companies depend on it tohire tens of thousands of em-ployees each year from coun-tries like India and China."If your FY 2021 petitionwas rejected or administra-tively closed solely becauseyour petition was based on aregistration submitted dur-ing the initial registration pe-riod, but you requested astart date after Oct. 1, 2020,you may re-submit that pre-viously filed petition, with allapplicable fees," USCIS said.

Across Hong Kong, peo-ple lined up early

Thursday to buy the lastprint edition of the last re-maining pro-democracynewspaper. By 8:30 am, Ap-ple Daily's final edition of1 million copies was soldout across most of thecity's newsstands. The newspaper said itwould cease operations af-ter police froze USD 2.3million in assets, searchedits office and arrested fivetop editors and executiveslast week, accusing themof foreign collusion to en-danger national security -another sign Beijing istightening its grip on thesemi-autonomous city.In recent years, the news-paper has become increas-ingly outspoken, criticizingChinese and Hong Kong au-thorities for limiting thecity's freedoms not found inmainland China and accus-ing them of reneging on apromise to protect them for50 years after the 1997 han-dover from Britain.

The pressure on the pa-per - and Hong Kong's civilliberties - increased afterauthorities responded tomassive protests in 2019with a sweeping nationalsecurity law - used in thearrests of the newspaperemployees - and revampedHong Kong's election lawsto keep opposition voicesout of the legislature."This is our last day, andlast edition, does this re-flect the reality that HongKong has started to lose itspress freedom and free-dom of speech?" said anApple Daily graphic de-signer, Dickson Ng."Why does it have to endup like this? Why is therenot going to be the Apple(Daily) newspaper anymore in Hong Kong?" To abig applause, associatepublisher Chan Pui-mantold staff who gatheredaround the newsroomWednesday night: "You'vedone a great job, every-one!" Chan was one of thefive arrested last week.
