JUBILEE- YEAR OF MERCY" Pope Francis has asked every parish to celebratethis year as a “Jubilee of Mercy” that officially beganon 12/8 and will end on 11-20-16. During theupcoming year, we will be celebrating the “Jubilee -Year of Mercy” here at OLM with different programs

and events. During Lent we are using a beautiful rendition ofthe Stations of the Cross by Pope Francis. Please join us onFridays at 7PM in the Chapel. How will YOU celebrate thisJubilee Year of Mercy?

LITURGY CORNER Early Christians prepared for Easter by fasting 2-3 days. In Rome this Paschal fast seems to have lasted for 3 weeks. By the 4th century, it had developed into a 40 day Lent. Fasting, distinguished the ministry of Jesus from that of John theBaptist. John and his disciples fasted. Jesus and his disciplesdid not. In fact, they ate and drank quite heartily with whoeverinvited them. Respectable people like the Pharisees wouldoccasionally ask them to dinner. Most often they ate withpeople whom the Pharisees denounced as sinners and outcasts.Jesus made these dinners joyful symbols of God, gathering allhis children at the table to heal their broken hearts. “Why don’tyour disciples fast?” Jesus was asked. “Can the wedding guestsfast while the bridegroom is with them?” he replied. “The dayswill come when the bridegroom is taken away from them andthey will fast.” (Mark 9:14) And they did fast after Jesusreturned to his Father. They used the money they saved byfasting to feed the hungry, to care for the sick, the widowedand the orphaned. Church law tells adults to fast on AshWednesday and Good Friday. We are all encouraged to domore and use the money we save on snacks, treats and moviesto help the hungry and the homeless. Doing this, we make Lenta joyful reminder that Christ is still among us, healing thebroken-hearted. Have a blessed week! Lisa

FAITH AT HOMELent’s holy drama stirs the senses: the purple cloth onthe altar; the hush during the Stations of the Cross;the feel of the wood on the cross during

veneration...all create memories your family can hold in theirhearts. Why not create more memories with your children sothat “prayer, fasting and almsgiving” become more than just bigwords. You can turn these three basic elements of Lent intodeep, holy experiences for your whole family: Prayer - Seek thesacrament of Reconciliation during Lent. Help your children thinkabout to whom they should say “I’m sorry” each day. Move yourcrucifix somewhere in your house so that it is a daily visual reminderof Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Attend Stations of the Cross together asa family. Fasting - Fasting is so much more than giving up food. During Lent we can fast from things we like to do (eating sweets) orthings we should not do (roll your eyes when someone is talking). Byfasting, we make a sacrifice for God. In the quiet at bedtime, take amoment to discuss the day’s sacrifice and the struggles that come withit. Almsgiving - Almsgiving is so much more than giving money.During Lent, we can give of ourselves. And we can honor Mary, whogave the world the greatest gift - her son, Jesus. Mary’s “yes” to Godto be the mother of Jesus is a reminder that we all have gifts to give. Here are some examples: Mail a gift card for food/gas to a relative whois struggling with bills. Give a Sat afternoon to pick up trash aroundthe neighborhood. Deliver a bag/can of dog/cat food to an animalshelter. Leave a meal on the doorstep of a neighbor or friend who haslost his/her job. Enjoy your week! Lisa
