Austen Morris Associates: Seminar

Creating Wealth OffshoreWritten by Senior consultants: Wade Dawson, Chris Slater-Jones and Kirk McArdle

Many investors are currently worried about financial markets. People are concerned about China’s slowing growth, the continued US Federal Reserve Bank tapering and its effects on global emerging markets, the potential breakup of Ukraine, inflated stock valuations, labor strikes, and a variety of other issues. Many of these concerns are weighing on investor sentiment. However, adding international investments to your investment portfolio will allow you to profit from these concerns and grow your portfolio.

International investing may not be appropriate for all investors, but for those seeking to broadly diversify their portfolios and who are willing to bear some risk, global investments offer new investment opportunities and solid returns. Austen Morris Associates specializes in offshore private wealth management and we have been doing so successfully for over twenty years. As independent financial consultants, we provide unbiased advice and access to the world’s top investment management institutions. We offer a comprehensive range of investment services, full portfolio management, online access, and provide a high level of personalized service to each client. By focusing on your needs as an individual, we tailor your offshore investment portfolio to reach your specific financial goals and maximize the benefits of investing overseas.

Offshore Investment OptionsWhether you are a beginning investor with a tight budget (1000 USD monthly or more to spare) or a more experienced investor (50,000-100,000+ USD lump sum investment), there is an investment option offshore that may suit your financial needs. For the beginner, the best place to invest is into the mutual fund market. Mutual funds have positions in multiple companies; thus instant global diversification is achieved. As a novice investor, you should concentrate on building your portfolio through a blend of mutual funds.

For the more seasoned investor, a portfolio with an open investment architecture approach and a diversified international asset allocation is essential. An ideal portfolio

might include a mixture of blue chip and small-cap stocks in developed and developing countries, (dividend producing and non dividend paying stocks) emerging market and developed market ETFs, mutual funds, bonds, fixed income products, and some exposure to alternative investments such as hedge funds, futures, options, and other structured products.

Whether you are young or old, a first-time investor or a veteran, successful investing requires discipline and patience. Sound financial planning is essential for your overall pursuit to build capital. Whatever your financial circumstances are, you might want to also consider the benefits of an offshore investment to help you achieve your overall investment goals.

Austen Morris Associates’ expertise in global financial planning, international investment strategy, and individual investment management allows us to match our clients’ needs, their investment goals, and their risk tolerance with a global portfolio that is right for them. We would be happy to offer you a confidential consultation and explain in more detail the investment opportunities offshore and the investment services we provide.

We are an authorized Financial Services Provider in South Africa. If you’d like to discuss offshore investments with us, contact us at the office on +27 (0) 115140745 and ask for Michelle or email her directly at [email protected]. She will be happy to arrange an appointment with one of us.

If you enjoy good food and wine and learning more about international investing, please join us on June 12th. We would love to see you at our dinner event at the Dainfern Clubhouse. In the meantime, we will leave you with some investment ideas on the following page.

Dear FriendsAutumn is here and that means glorious days especially here in Port Alfred. In fact I haven’t been able to resist going down to one of our wonderful beaches and walking and walking and walking, even trailing my feet in the warm ocean every now and again. What bliss! Perhaps this will even make you envious enough to want to visit our lovely Sunshine Coast!

Sitting on the StoepPlanning a trip is almost as much fun as the trip itself. We have two trips planned for this year using up some accumulated points and funds before their expiry dates.

Our first is north via the Drakensburg edges to near Kruger and our second is west at flower time to the Cape and Namaqualand. So, how best to smell the daisies along the way- that is the Question?

Going north from Port Alfred it is best to hug the foothills of the Drakensberg and so you will visit, or pass through, places with romantic names such as Ugie, Matatiele and Underberg – so dig out the iPad to help you decide where to stop for tea or lunch and what to see. Type in ‘Ug” and ‘Ugie’ appears but no coffee place listed. Try Matatiele – again lots of accommodation listed – no coffee shop.

So, I revert to my old ways - get out the Atlas and copies of my second favourite magazine Country Life (The Gardener is my first favourite) which is sure to have been to a lot of these out of the way places that one can include on local and not-so-local travels. Good article on the gardens of Kokstad which we can include on our way back; also a mention of Swartberg on our way past Matatiele so now we’ve somewhere for lunch and a chat, I think; so fixed up indeed! We have family to stay with as well so no B&Bs necessary this time. All this information gleaned is exactly why I accumulate things, magazines and more, (which drives my neat wife mad) and why I need to keep buying bookcases!

Speaking of which my house editor (wife) has spoiled me (again – her words not mine) and when I discovered some

long lost packages of precious books has allowed me TWO extra bookshelves! I had better not push my luck as she now says any more and she will have to move out to make more space. Can’t have that. But how better to adorn a room(s) than with books and precious paintings?

I must tell you I was so lucky! When we moved from Mahikeng to Johannesburg some twenty plus years ago we needed to send belongings all over the place. Some of my books got sent to Port Alfred and were stuck up in the ceiling of the garage of our beach home and promptly forgotten – for years. I erroneously blamed ‘others’ for this loss. And then a couple of weeks ago we needed to clear out the garage and I was forced into a chore I really didn’t want to face. And guess what? My precious books were found! I owe numerous people, removers etc apologies – it was all my own error and forgetfulness!

Undeserved happy ending; undeserved happy extra bookshelves – bless my editors – both of them. What was lost is found and a happier man you would have to go a long way to find!

As usual I have digressed. I will tell you how our trip pans out another time.

Nature’s True Colours Once again the children have been busy with their crayons – maybe giving Mummy a bit of peace while they are concentrating on their creations! Phumeza (aged 6) has scooped the prize this month.

Birds, Beasties, Trees, Updates and Important ThingsI see the Nature Association has been very busy lately with bird walks, talks on reptiles and Quiz Nights. That’s great – keep up the good work.

Crackerjack “A good book is the best of friends, the same today and for ever.” “Of Reading” by Martin Tupper 1810 – 1889

Said by an English writer in 1838 and as true today as then. Isn’t one lucky to have so many friends; and old friends are particularly loved especially when they hide and are then found (I refer to books, of course. My human friends don’t usually hide!). May you too find and treasure all your old friends like I have.

I know we are very lucky!Regards from Tony Borderfor the Nature Association

ELECTRICAL FENCING CERTIFICATES – “Must I obtain one when I sell my property?”

Property MattersAll your property related questions answered

Over the last couple of years electric fencing has become a prescribed means of securing and protecting ones immovable property. This has evidently led to the market being flooded by suppliers who offer electrical fencing installations.

Subsequently the Electrical Machinery Regulations in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act was promulgated to regulate electric fencing and its certification.

The Regulations stipulate that all electric fences installed after 1 October 2012 must be certified and have an electric fence system certificate of compliance.

The Regulation further stipulates that where there is a change in ownership of a property which is secured by an electric fence which was installed after 1 October 2012 the user must obtain an electric fence certificate.

This means that if a homeowner installed an electric fence on his property prior to 1 October 2012 he is not required

to obtain such a certificate, but that such a certificate will be required by the user if the property is transferred after 1 October 2012 and the user wishes to utilise the system.

The Regulation does not stipulate which party (seller/buyer) will be liable for the costs of the certificate and hence this can be negotiated in the sale agreement.

Unlike the Electrical Compliance certificate the Electric fence certificate does not expire after two years unless alterations or additions have been done to the electric fence after the certificate was issued, in which case a new certificate will be required.

Warm winter window ideas During the winter months our 'summer-designed' homes lose a lot of heat through windows that are dressed for the warmer seasons, but not for when it gets cold. With so many options to choose from, you can have stylish window treatments that look good in summer and help keep your home warm in winter.

Interior Ideas

continue on page 20

Even if you prefer a minimalist approach to dressing windows, blinds alone will not keep out cold draughts. But if you add a layered look with curtains, your rooms not only look good but will be warmer.

Install floor-to-ceiling curtains in a room with a low ceiling, or where windows are low and need to be visually heightened.

Venetian blinds are an affordable and practical way to dress up windows where privacy is required, but do little for warming up a home in the colder months.

A simple rod or rail mounted over the window allows you to fit curtains and cut down on draughts.

Choose fabrics that work with your decorating scheme or style. Even a light-weight fabric will help heat loss through windows.

On windows fitted with voile or sheer curtains, adding a vertical sliding panel - as shown below - will add a layer of warmth during winter that can be slid out of sight in the summer months.

Bamboo blinds are an affordable option for all rooms in a home, but windows have a tendency to look unfinished with just these blinds fitted.

Simply by adding curtains you can dress up and finish off the look.

Roman blinds offer the options to have them made or make your own blinds. When fitted to overlap the frame of a window, these blinds do offer a certain amount of draught proofing. But when fitted inside the frame, a pair of curtains on either side will keep out the chill.

A window treatment that combines Roman blinds and drapery panels can look absolutely stunning when done with the right fabric.

10 ways to make your home feel cosy

Winter's fierce growl along with short, hectic days beg you to find comfort inside your own home. When you walk through your front door, you just want to feel hugged, don't you?

Interior Ideas

Let your home embrace you with warmth

Here are 10 easy things you can do to make your home feel more cosy and the season's chill seem less mean:

1. Add warm coloursWhether you paint your walls a sun-kissed gold, cover a sofa with a warm-toned slipcover or simply add pillows or a throw blanket in a "hot" shade, you can quickly make a room look brighter and feel cosier with the right colour. Any shade that complements flesh tones is a comforting thing.

2. Play with texturePlush upholstery and flannel bedding can provide your home with a soft, relaxing touch. To make texture interest-ing, we recommend introducing a variety: Choose a throw blanket with an open weave, such as chenille, for a twill sofa with a tight, smooth weave. The contrast provides richness and warmth. Nothing beats a Gorgeous Faux Fur Throw to cuddle up with.

3. Illuminate "feel good" objectsLighting shoos away winter's shadows, but it can also cast our focus on fair-weather days. By placing artful group-ings of mementos and photographs beneath a lamp on an end table, you can draw attention to objects you love and memories that warm your heart.

4. Bring the outdoors in Plants and fresh flowers can breathe life into your home – actually imparting oxygen into the air – and remind you of gentler days.

5. Work on spatial relationshipsThe sizes and shapes of your furnishings are important – variety adds interest. How you arrange these pieces are important. For optimal cosiness, create conversation groupings by moving furnishings closer together – a guest needing to rise to place a mug on a coffee table is a no-no.

6. Get yourself a comfy chairA large, comfy chair to land in at the end of the day is the ultimate refuge from the cold world. Choose one with a high back and an inherent sense of softness about the upholstery for visual warmth and comfortable seating. Create the full "chair ensemble" with a standing lamp and end table and set the grouping in an intimate corner.

7. Cover your "ground"Nothing warms up a bare floor quicker than an area rug. Don't under estimate the visual warmth it provides as well, especially in sunburst tones. Also, the pile in some Indian and Pakistani rugs made using vegetable dyes gives you the option of making them look even "warmer." From one angle, the colours look muted and soft, from another, they appear deeper and brighter. Choose the brighter angle for added winter warmth.

8. Light a candleThis literal spark of warmth works in any decor and in any room. Added visual warmth and design cachet can be

achieved by placing candles in hurricane lamps made of amber-toned glass or in a grouping of holders.

9. Alter your senses – with scentsGorgeous scented diffusers, and colourful, multi-textured potpourri – a mixture of scented preserved leaves, nuts, fruit slices, seedpods and pinecones – artfully arranged in a favourite bowl provides a vibrant focal point on a coffee or end table and enlivens a room with a pleasant aroma to lighten spirits and freshen the air.

We also love the natural aroma of fresh flowers, even the less heady varieties, for their soft, understated scents with the promise of warmer days to come.

10. Light A FireMake use of your fireplace, whether it be a natural fire or a gas fireplace. Nothing beats the look and feel of a cosy fire burning....

Colour Scheming

Colour scheming is the first step to successful design. It is all about selecting the colours that work well together - and well for you.

Create a stir in your home by bringing together colours that complement each other perfectly...

Colour SchemesColours are generally seen in the context of other colours, which means that how you combine should work together to create balance and reflect your personal style.

By using the colour wheel, you can see how colours work together and produce co-ordinating schemes for your home.

ToningAchieve a subtle, understated look by using varying shades of the same colour. This can be viewed easily by

using colours from the same stripe card, from in store colour mixing system at Hardware Stores.

ContrastingBy suing the colour wheels natural spectrum, use the colour opposite the main colour to give a striking, more dramatic result. This is ideal for accessories or a feature wall.

HarmonisingBy using colours adjacent to each other, you can create a beautiful balanced and sympathetic scheme.

Colour MoodsColour is a language with many moods. The colour palette you choose should be one that pleases you - so take time to look at your space and think about the type of feeling you want to create.

We divide colours into four moods. By selecting colours from the same mood you can be sure of a balanced and successful colour scheme.

RichRich colours tend to be quite strong, and can be used to create a sense of drama in a room.

FreshFresh colours are clean and pure, creating a sense of enlighten and energy to a room.

WarmWarm colours are mellow an relaxed, and make any room feel cosy and welcoming.

CalmCalm colours are soft and subtle, with a muted grey undertone to instil an air of tranquillity into your space.

Choosing paint colours? Confidence is key...If you’re a little apprehensive about putting brush to wall, simply follow our guide to achieving colour confidence.1. Try paint testers in a range of shades. This is

a wonderful way to ensure the colour you love looks just as great on your walls as it does online.

2. Before you start painting, apply two coats to a piece of A4 lining paper. Hang the paper on different walls throughout the day to see how the colour changes in sunlight and under artificial light. You’ll find that whites are particularly influenced by the effects of light.

3. Which direction does your room face? It’s important to keep in mind that most colours will look slightly darker and colder in north-facing rooms because the light is cooler and flatter.

4. Wet paint looks vastly different to dry paint. Try not to make any decisions until the paint is completely dry. Most importantly, trust your instincts. If you love it, it’s right.

Just like that – Autumn is upon us!

Well, the flooding is a thing of the past, golf is in full swing again, the mornings are darker and rather nippy – an autumnal chill in the air which I have to say, after a very hot summer, is most welcome. I discussed the AGM and next committee in the last In Focus, so on to the fun part – The Captain’s Dinner - it promises to be an absolutely fabulous evening. product are removed more quickly.• Helps to reduce pain and for the body to

Colon Hydrotherapy (CHT)Colon Hydrotherapy (CHT) is a natural complementary therapy that is used to cleanse the colon of waste. CHT therapists are trained to gently cleanse the colon with highly filtered water with specialised equipment.

Studies show that CHT sessions increase the immune function of our bodies by increasing the amount of lymphocytes in your blood. Proponents of CHT report benefits from lessening of constipation to better sleep and a dramatic decrease in bloating.

Briony Botha, of Trinity Health in Dainfern is the only Certified Clinical Colon Hydrotherapist in the country says the CHT is a safe, natural alternative to harsh chemical laxatives. "Colonics work by gently expanding the colon with warm, filtered water, this process is soothing and also allows the natural reflexes of the colon to stimulate contractions, giving the colon a work out unlike laxatives which irritate the lining of the colon. Our aim is always to create balance and restore proper digestive functioning by using colon therapy as an intervention, but a large part of our work is aiding clients with their diets and making better food choices.

It is our belief that diet is the major culprit when it comes to digestive issues." Colon therapists should be certified through one of several CHT associations. Practitioners who are not certified may not be up to standard. There are only a small number of therapists in the country who hold

certifications. Briony holds certifications from the Global Professsional Association for Colon Therapy, including Advanced, Clinical and Instructor and is a member of the GPACT Advisory Board as well as acting as an Ambassador for the association in South Africa.

Colon Therapy can be an effective tool for weight loss. "Better digestive functioning can lead to dietary changes being more effective and aiding in the weight loss process" says Briony, " at Trinity Health we run a version of the famous Bernard Jensen 7 day cleansing programme which thoroughly detoxes the entire body through a juice fast combined with cleansing supplements and colon therapy, leading to not only weight loss and better digestive functioning, but also breaking sugar and carbohydrate addictions.

After the first 7 days, we mentor our clients and assist them in achieving their weight loss goals." Trinity Health has branches in Dainfern (Peaches and Cream Body Centre) and Honeydew. All our therapists are registered with GPACT and represent some of the best CHT therapists in South Africa.

Running Club

Congratulations Kelly, Jenna and FinnOn 23 March 2014 three of our junior members participated in the SA Triathlon Championships in East London.

Kelly Fairon, Finn Elliott and Jenna Smart all participated in the age 12-13 age group for this event, which includes a 400m swim (in the ocean!), a 10km cycle and a 2,5km run.

Their hard work and training paid off as Kelly came first in the girls event in a time of 00:38:39 and Jenna came third in a time of 00:43:14. Finn came third in the boys event in a great time of 00:38:02. These are fantastic results, especially considering they were competing against athletes from all over South Africa.

Kelly, Jenna and Finn are regulars at our weekly time trial and we are often treated to very exciting sprint finishes with someone (often an adult) trying to catch them. We look forward to watching your sporting careers develop in the years to come.

Well done you guys - we are so proud of you!

Running 'World Cup'As autumn approaches, some of us find it very difficult to keep motivated and maintain our training. To give our members some extra incentive we will be holding a ‘world cup’ of running over the period 30 April 2014 to 28 May 2014.

Members of the running club are going to be able to register to ‘run for their country’ in teams of 8 or less. They will score points just for participation – the points will be awarded to each team member every time they run a time trial with us on a Wednesday. Bonus points can be scored for first places in each distance every week.

At the end of July the team with the most points will win a fabulous prize of a meal out at our Clubhouse restaurant. Smartcore Financial Services have sponsored a R2000 meal voucher and the restaurant will be throwing in two bottles of wine.

Because we have a very diverse club with members from all over the world it promises to be an exciting competition. Watch this space to see which nation prevails!

Gauteng League SeasonThe Gauteng league season is our main focus currently with much activity during these matches played during weekday evenings. There is a brilliant spirit as Dainfern looks to continue their reputation as a well-respected, competitive club within the Gauteng squash fraternity.

Additionally, our courts are utilised 7 days a week by our residents with kids learning and participating from as young as 4yrs old.

Dainfern Football Club Update

Q: Who was the first football club you played for?A: The first club I played for was called Union Grounds, I was 10 years old. A well-known player called Colin Viljoen also played there & went on to play for Ipswich Town in England, he played 43 games for them and also got 3 England Caps.

Q: Who inspired you to be a goalkeeper and what local team did you support back then ?A: My inspiration came from the best Goalkeeper South Africa ever produced “Rocco Smith”, hey google him and see what you find. (I followed this guy and watched him my whole career) I supported a club known as Durban United.

Q: What was your greatest achievement in the game?A: Turning professional at the age of 19, also being one of the first “white players” to play in the first multiracial game ever played in South Africa, it was Benoni United vs Witbank AcesA: I also had an 8 year amateur career, of which 6 of those years I was selected to be the Goalkeeper for the Southern Transvaal district Team.

Q: Who do you think is the finest Football player you have ever seen, in your time and in current times?A: No doubt that Pele’ was the finest player in my time, and he can compare with today’s Lional Messi, although I think Pele’ was even better than Messi.

Q: Who is your favourite player today, favorite local and international Teams?A: Lional Messi for sure as he reminds me of Pele and Marradona, My local team is Kaizer Chiefs, and overseas is Brazil and of course Liverpool. (YNWA)

Q: What is your personal vision for the Dainfern Lions Football team & what legacy do you wish to leave?A: My vision is to teach and encourage every player to learn the basics of football, and explain that football is a team game. (You win as a team and you lose as a team)A: Commitment is vital to the game of football so my legacy is to encourage all players to play the beautiful game with full commitment and a spirit of Excellence.

Q: What would you like to say to the parents out there, what can Football teach their children?A: I would love for parents to understand that, football would teach their children:

1. Commitment2. The importance of teamwork3. Everyone in the team is important4. Learn sportsmanship and being a good sport

Q: What is the best single piece of advice you could give any learning footballer?A: My strong belief in the game is: Trap the ball……. Look up & Pass..!!

Getting to know the Dainfern Lion’s Head Coach a bit better

Gary played the beautiful game competitively for just over 22 years, 20 of those years he was a TOP Goalkeeper.

Tennis Update

Chasing a Dream

Duane Armstrong 082 456 5441 [email protected] www.armstrongtennisacademy.co.za

As a young boy I imagined and dreamt of becoming a professional tennis player and touring the world. I had it all figured out, where I will stay, what cars and superbikes I will own and all the great things that go with it. But most of all I loved hitting that yellow ball. I could not get enough of it and trained hours and hours.

My idol was Ivan Lendle one of the greatest players of all time and currently coaching Andy Murray. I wanted to play like lendle, imitate his strokes and definitely wear addidas clothes.

There would always be a huge crowd of people around the television when the Grand Slams were on, and even the grand prix’s as they were called years ago. I could see myself there and it would motivate me so much more to train even harder, if that was possible. I wasn’t the most talented nor fastest player, but most definitely the hardest worker and most determined player. My training on and off the court made up for any short comings that I might have had. Nobody could break my spirit and many tried and failed. I believed in myself and I will be a great player, and if not today then most definitely tomorrow.

My darkest days were rainy days and when I never had a training partner. We lived next to a petrol station with a workshop and they had a great big wall. That wall became my best friend for hours every week. The owner was cross the first time he caught me making marks on the wall where the ball hit it, but realized that I am a youngster staying out of trouble and just wanted to practice. He then gave up on painting the wall and let me be.

Most of all I loved competing and could not wait for the next tournament. One learns so much from playing matches, win or lose. You might be upset for losing but identify what let you down or perhaps the opponent was to strong. Either way you go back to the drawing board and become even stronger in your game and mind!

I played and trained for myself and nobody else. My dreams and goals were mine and nobody else’s. That made me a happy, driven, hard worker and I achieved what I set out to do. And yes we have stumble blocks on route and sometimes we don’t think we can overcome them. Determination and being positive can conquer all. I was very unfortunate as an 18 year old to have a very bad motorcycle accident that nearly broke me. I could not hold a racquet for a year and was told I would be crippled. I have had metal pins and screws in my knee since the

age of 18 and overcame my obstacles with hard work and determination. I have never given up and never will.

There are so many youngsters with the same dreams and they have it all figured out. Yes they might have ups and down and some will get stuck in the downs and lose sight of their dreams. What we do we do for ourselves and our dreams and goals. I was once told, "what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger" very wise worlds!

Chase your dreams and don’t lose sight of it. It might not always be easy but the prize is worth the fight.

If you can imagine it, you can dream it and then you can become it!!

Barleria holubii

Flower of the Month

Family: Acanthaceae; Common name: bushveld joy

If you are an indigenous plant lover and you need an attractive, fast-growing, hardy plant for the rocky areas in your garden, Barleria holubii is the answer to your problem.

Description: Barleria holubii is a dwarf, thorny shrub up to 800 mm high. The leaves are ovate to obovate (egg-

shaped) and the leaf tips are armed with a sharp thorn. The stem is covered with thorns, especially at the leaf axils (the angle between the stem and leaf stalk). The small orange flowers have a long, narrow tube. It flowers almost the whole year except for June and July. The small seed capsule, present in most members of the Acanthaceae, bursts open when ripe to distribute the seeds. It is a fast-growing plant, reaching maturity in two years.

Conservation status: None.

Distribution and habitat: Barleria holubii grows in well-drained soil and in full sun in woodlands and hills in Mpumalanga, Limpopo Province and Zimbabwe. It is a water-wise plant but does well in wetter conditions. It can withstand mild frost quite well.

Derivation of name and historical aspects: The genus name Barleria is derived from the name of a Dominican monk and French botanist, Jacques Barrelier. The genus Barleria is found throughout Asia, Africa and America. It contains about 250 species with about 60 species in Africa. The genus includes species such as the white-flowered B. albostellata, mauve, blue or pink-flowered B. obtusa, and the rose-pink B. repens. Barleria holubii was named after Emil Holub, a 19th century European naturalist and explorer in Africa.Ref :SANBI is acknowledged by the name South African National Biodiversity Institute, South Africa.

Cussonia paniculata Eckl. & Zeyh.Family: Araliaceae; Common names: Mountain cabbage tree, bergkiepersol (Afr.), Umsenge (X, Sw) Umsengembuzi (Z)

Tree of the Month

This evergreen tree makes a beautiful focal point in a garden as it has an unusual shape, interesting gnarled bark and stunning, large, grey-green leaves. Plants show up especially well in a layout where rocks are used. Gardeners growing indigenous South African plants favour them greatly for their unique appearance.

DescriptionThis is a short, thick-set tree, rarely exceeding 5 m in height. It is sparsely branched with grey, longitudinal fissured, thick and corky bark. The stem is thick and squat and the roots are thick and swollen. The tree is slow growing.

The large cabbage blue leaves are one of its most distinctive features. The leaf colour is in some part due to the thick waxy layers on the leaves, which may help protect them against severe frosts. The leaves are composed of 7-9, but sometimes up to 13 leaflets, springing from the end of a long stalk. The leaflets are up to 30 cm in length and the overall leaf can reach 60 cm. The leaflets of some forms are deeply lobed. New leaves are brighter green and emerge in a spring flush at the ends of branches.

From January to April these trees bear small, green, stalked flowers; in short dense spikes, making up a large, branched inflorescence at the end of the trunk or branches. Flowers are followed by fleshy and purple-maroon fruits, which mature in May to June.

DistributionCussonia paniculata occurs inland at altitudes up to 2 100 m. It is often found in rocky places from the mountains of the Karoo and Eastern Cape through KwaZulu-Natal and Free State into Gauteng and further north. It grows in crevices filled with natural organic humus and compost. It is commonly found near Johannesburg and Pretoria. It is frost-tolerant and drought resistant.

Little Grebe Tachybaptus ruficollis

By André Marx

Bird of the Month

The Little Grebe - also known as the Dabchick - is occasionally observed in Dainfern, usually in one of the ponds and dams on the estate with vegetation, which is where it can hide from its prey. It is seldom seen on the river as it generally avoids fast flowing water. As a diving species and a skilful swimmer it is able to pursue its fish and invertebrate prey underwater.

The adult is easily identified in summer as it is mostly dark above and has a rich rufous neck, cheeks and flanks. The bird also has a distinctive far-carrying call at this time, sounding like a rapid weet-weet-weet, which has been likened to a horse whinnying. In non-breeding plumage the rufous is replaced by a brownish-buff colour, but even then the small size of this bird makes identification relatively easy. It has the habit of sitting in the water with its rump positioned higher than its back.

Keep an eye open for this enigmatic species on the estate. As long as our dams are in good shape they will be around!
