Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I hope you enjoyed Bishop Barron’s Part V of The Mass – Preparing for Sacri-fice. The following is a breakdown of the video presentation:

I. PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS

A. Offering of the gifts: bread, wine, water and usually money 1. Symbolizes the self-offering of the assembly; giving God the best of ourselves 2. A sacrifice—giving part of God’s creation back to him as a sign of love, gratitude, petition and reverence 3. Indicates the main point of the Liturgy of the Eucharist in union with Christ’s sacrifice, we sacrifice ourselves to the Father B. Berakah prayer: “Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation . . .” C. Cleaning of the priest’s hands D. Hinge of the Mass: “Pray brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours . . .”

II. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

A. The Preface 1. Series of three exchanges between priest and people 2. Lifting our hearts to the mountaintop and beyond to heaven 3. Right and just to give thanks to the Father

B. The Sanctus: praise in union with the heavenly liturgy C. The priest praises God the Father D. The First Epiclesis: calling forth the Holy Spirit to transform the bread and wine into

the Body and Blood of Christ—Trinitarian action: “Asking the Father to send the Spirit to make present the Son”

Here are some questions to think about and share this week: 1. The video mentions that “gratitude and trust are the two things we so easily lose sight of in our day-to-day living.” a. Take a moment each day over the next week and write down three things you are grateful for that day. How does this simple recollecting affect your attitude during the week? b. When do you find it difficult to trust? How would you assess your trust in the promises of Christ? 2. Have you experienced the “cycle of sacrifice, blessing and continual abundance” in your own life? If so, describe and share it with another person. If not, what do you think needs to change so you can experience it? 3. What have been some of your most memorable “mountain top” experiences, where you felt at peace and in the presence of God?

I hope that you have a blessed day and week. You are daily in my thoughts and prayers. May Lent be a wonderful time of spiritual growth for you.

DON’T MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY! PLAN TO ATTEND THE EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS 2019

Catholic Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama June 28-29, 2019

Why should we attend? We attend because the Eucharist is the source and summit of our Catholic faith. Yet, most often non-Catholics do not have any occasion to be exposed to or learn about this central mystery of our Church. It is important that we make pub-lic opportunities to witness to our belief in Jesus’ real presence. We hope to charter a bus to take us to the Eucharistic Congress on Saturday, June 29. If you would like to attend the Congress, please sign up. The cost of the bus is $20.00 per person roundtrip, and the sign-up deadline is Palm Sunday, April 14. The Congress is free. The only other expense will be buying food for the day.

ANNUAL SEDER MEAL Palm Sunday, April 14, 2019, 5:30 p.m. in the Fr. Messmer Center. Tickets are $10 single, $15 for two and $25 per family. Purchase tickets on March 30/31 and April 6/7 at all Masses. To volunteer, sign up in the church vestibule and breezeway, or call Nancy Harris at 256-851-1836 or Theresa Arnold at 256-503-5773.

THE WIDOWS AND WIDOWERS group will meet at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, for lunch at El Vaquero Mexican restaurant, 10020 South Memorial Parkway in Huntsville (in front of Home Depot). Please call Nancy at 256-469-7971 for information, reser-vations or cancellations. Newcomers are always welcome. Join us for fellowship and conversation.

THE BENEDICTINE SISTERS RETREAT CENTER in Cullman and Contemplative Outreach Birmingham are sponsoring an Intensive Centering Prayer weekend retreat in Cullman April 11-14, 2019. This event is designed for those experienced in Centering Prayer, and previous attendance at an Introduction to Centering Prayer retreat is a prerequisite. There will be extended periods of Centering Prayer and shared Lectio Divina. The cost is $330 per person for a private room and includes lodging, meals, and linens. For registration information, please call (256) 734-8302 or e-mail to [email protected].
