The tragically early death of KingGeorge VI and the sudden Ac-cession of Queen Elizabeth II on6 February 1952 were emotionalevents which deeply affectedpeople around the UK, Com-monwealth and the world. Aftera period of widespread mourn-ing for the late king, people wel-comed the opportunity to rejoicethe following year when the 26-year-old Queen Elizabeth wascrowned in an ancient ceremonyin Westminster Abbey.

THE QUEEN'S CORONATION

The Queen's Coronation took place onTuesday, 2 June 1953 amid great public rejoic-ing. It was over a year since The Queen's Ac-cession, but the ceremony required manymonths of planning.

The day - chosen as one likely to be sun-ny - proved very wet, but the enthusiasm of thecrowds gathered in London was undiminished.Spirits were additionally buoyed by the news, announced to the crowds over loudspeakers, that a British expedition under Captain JohnHunt had finally conquered Everest. EdmundHillary, a New Zealander, had been the first toset foot on the summit with his Sherpa, Tenz-ing Norkhay. Joining in with the crowds cele-brating in London were many millions aroundthe UK, Commonwealth and world, since theevents were shown on BBC television.

The crowds cheered the procession ofguests who made their way to the Abbey incoaches, including visiting heads of state, rep-resentatives of Commonwealth countries andmembers of the Royal Family. Queen Salote ofTonga, braving the rain in an open landau, proved especially popular with the crowds. Atjust after half past ten, The Queen and TheDuke of Edinburgh set out to Westminster Ab-bey from Buckingham Palace in the Gold StateCoach, which was pulled by eight WindsorGreys.

The Queen was the last to arrive at theAbbey at eleven o'clock. She was wearing adiamond diadem, crimson velvet robestrimmed with ermine and bordered with goldlace, and a special Coronation gown incorpo-rating all the floral symbols of the UK andCommonwealth. After The Queen had beenacknowledged by all four corners of the Abbey, she made her Coronation Oath.

In the central act of the ceremony, TheQueen's rich robes and jewels were lifted off byher Maids of Honour, leaving The Queenwearing a simple linen overdress. The Arch-bishop of Canterbury, Dr. Geoffrey Fisher, anointed The Queen with the holy oil, made toa formula originally devised by Charles I.

On her return journey The Queen carriedher Orb and Sceptre, warmly acknowledgingthe cheering that greeted her. At the PalaceThe Queen and her family made six appear-ances on the balcony to greet the cheeringcrowds and to watch the Royal Air Force flypast. The last appearance was at midnight, af-ter which the crowds in the Mall and aroundthe Palace began to disperse.

At nine o'clock in the evening The Queenmade a radio broadcast, in which she thankedher people for their support that day, and de-clared, 'I have in sincerity pledged myself toyour service, as so many of you are pledged tomine. Throughout all my life and with all myheart I shall strive to be worthy of your trust'.
