1 Sunday, August 29, 2021 Proper 17, The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost Holy Eucharist Rite II at 10:00AM PRELUDE (Samuel Ducommun) Choral Introit: Jubilate Deo (arranged by S. Jubenville) ONLINE SERVICE NOTES Automated closed captioning is now available. We encourage everyone to pray and sing along at home, although for clarity’s sake we need to keep people muted during online worship. You are welcome to add prayer requests, celebrations, and milestones in the chat box, but we won’t be able to read them out loud during the service this week. Just remember that we have to be careful not to share sensitive information online—please use first names only when referring to other people. Thank you! A note about Spiritual Communion: If you were unable to receive pre-consecrated hosts before this service, you may still participate in Spiritual Communion. The Book of Common Prayer reminds us that if one is unable to actually consume the consecrated bread and wine due to extreme sickness or disability, the desire is enough for God to grant all the benefits of communion (p. 457). When being present at a celebration of the Eucharist is absolutely impossible, as it is now, this act of prayer and meditation can provide the means by which you can associate yourself with the Eucharistic Action and open yourself to God’s grace and blessing. Please consider using the Act of Reception during Communion time. OPENING ACCLAMATION The Presider says Presider Blessed be the one, holy, and living God. People Glory to God for ever and ever. COLLECT FOR PURITY The Presider says Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

SONG OF PRAISE Canticle J “A Song of Judith” (EOM1)

Please repeat after the Cantor the first time: All: I will sing a new song, sing a new song to my God! I will sing! I will sing, sing a new song to my God!

Cantor: I will sing a new song to my God, for you are great and glorious, wonderful in strength, invincible.

All: I will sing a new song...

Cantor: Let the whole creation serve you, for you spoke and all things came into being. You sent your breath and it formed them, no one is able to resist your voice. Mountains and seas are stirred to their depths; rocks melt lie wax at your presence.

All: I will sing a new song...

Cantor: But to those who fear you, you continue to show mercy. No sacrifice, however fragrant, can please you, but whoever fears the Lord shall stand in your sight forever!

All: I will sing a new song... THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Presider God be with you. People And also with you. Presider Let us pray.

Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: Graft in our hearts the love of your Name; increase in us true religion; nourish us with all goodness; and bring forth in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen. FIRST READING A Reading from the Song of Solomon. The voice of my beloved!

Look, he comes, leaping upon the mountains,

bounding over the hills. My beloved is like a gazelle

or a young stag. Look, there he stands

behind our wall, gazing in at the windows,

looking through the lattice. My beloved speaks and says to me:

"Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away;

for now the winter is past, the rain is over and gone.

The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come,

and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land.

The fig tree puts forth its figs, and the vines are in blossom; they give forth fragrance.

Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away."

Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

Silence may follow.

PSALM Let us read together from Psalm 45. My heart is stirring with a noble song; let me recite what I have fashioned for the king; * my tongue shall be the pen of a skilled writer. You are the fairest of men; * grace flows from your lips, because God has blessed you for ever. Your throne, O God, endures for ever and ever, * a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of your realm; you love righteousness and hate iniquity. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you * with the oil of gladness above your companions. All your garments are fragrant with myrrh, aloes, and cassia, * and the music of strings from ivory palaces makes you glad. The royal daughters stand among the ladies of the court; * on your right hand is the queen, adorned with the gold of Ophir. SECOND READING A Reading from the first book of James. Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. In fulfillment of

Page 4: Sunday, August 29, 2021 Proper 17, The Fourteenth Sunday

4

his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; for your anger does not produce God's righteousness. Therefore rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls.

But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act-they will be blessed in their doing.

If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

SEQUENCE HYMN Alleluia (Susan Calvin Fletcher)

(Repeat after Cantor the first time) Alleluia, Alleluia.

Cantor Humbly welcome the implanted Word, seed of everlasting life.

Refrain Alleluia, Alleluia. Alleluia, Alleluia. GOSPEL Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him, they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them. (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders; and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.) So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” He said to them, “Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written,

Page 5: Sunday, August 29, 2021 Proper 17, The Fourteenth Sunday

5

‘This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me;

in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.’

You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition.”

Then he called the crowd again and said to them, “Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile.” For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

Deacon The Gospel of our Savior. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. THE SERMON Silence may follow the sermon. THE CREED We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven: was incarnate of the Holy Spirit the Virgin Mary, and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us,

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Presider Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People Presider

It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks, all-holy God, source of life and fountain of mercy.

You have filled us and all creation with your blessing and fed us with your constant love; you have redeemed us in Jesus Christ and knit us into one body. Through your Spirit you replenish us and call us to fullness of life. Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every generation, we lift our voices with all creation as we sing (say): SANCTUS Presider and People

Page 10: Sunday, August 29, 2021 Proper 17, The Fourteenth Sunday

10

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest. WORDS OF INSTITUTION The Presider continues Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life. On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Presider and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Presider continues

Page 11: Sunday, August 29, 2021 Proper 17, The Fourteenth Sunday

11

Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ’s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with Blessed Martin all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever.

Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. Amen. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen

The Breaking of the Bread

FRACTION ANTHEM Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Or you may wish to simply sing the hymn and ponder all that the Eucharist means to you. Act of Reception: In union, blessed Jesus, with the faithful gathered at every altar of Your Church where your blessed Body and Blood are offered this day, and remembering particularly the people of the Church of St. Martin, I long to offer you praise and thanksgiving, for creation and all the blessings of this life, for the redemption of the world, and for the means of grace and the hope of glory. I believe that you are truly present in the Holy Sacrament, and, since I cannot at this time receive communion, I pray you to come into my heart. DISMISSAL Deacon Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. People Thanks be to God. POSTLUDE (Samuel Ducommun) LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT We acknowledge the land on which we are gathered. For thousands of years, this land has been the home of Patwin people. Today, there are three federally-recognized Patwin tribes: Cachil Dehe Band of Wintun Indians of the Colusa Indian Community, Kletsel Dehe Wintun Nation, and Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation. The Patwin people have remained committed to the stewardship of this land over many centuries. It has been cherished and protected, as elders have instructed the young through generations. We are honored and grateful to be here today on their traditional lands.

Nurya Love Parish is founding Executive Director of Plainsong Farm, a non-profit, donor-supported, ecumenical, educational farm legally affiliated with the Episcopal Church. Plainsong's mission is to cultivate connections between people, places and God by tending a place that nurtures belonging and the radical renewal of God's world. The residential young adult fellowship, farm-based education and healthy food access programs, and national advocacy for wiser use of church owned land are all part of the farm's work. Rev. Parish is a priest in the Episcopal Church and author of Resurrection Matters: Church Renewal for Creation's Sake. Worship and Leadership Updates Sunday 10am Hybrid Service begins next Sunday, September 5 Beginning next Sunday, September 5, we will have a hybrid 10am service, meaning you have the option to attend either in person in the sanctuary or online via Zoom or Facebook Live. Due to COVID, we require masks and social distancing in the church. We will not have advance sign-ups, although our maximum capacity at this time is 65. The choir will be singing (also with masks), beginning on September 12. At 8am, we will continue to have an in-person service. Both services will include Communion. Change in Shared Home Communion Host Distribution With the two in-person services, we will not be distributing communion hosts on Saturday afternoon for home use. However, if you wish to have home communion and are unable to attend one of our in-person services, please contact one of our clergy, and they would be happy to make appropriate arrangements. Please note: If you currently receive Home Communion regularly at URC or through our St. Martin’s Messengers program, we hope to continue those deliveries for as long as necessary. Help Wanted: Ushers and Readers Ushers: If you are interested in serving as an usher for the 8:00 am or 10am service, please contact Joannie Cavanagh at [email protected] for more info or to add your name to the rotating schedule.

Readers: We need readers for September at both services! If you can read in person at any 8:00 am service or 10:00 am service, please call or email the office or fill out your availability on this Doodle Poll: https://doodle.com/poll/vfczc69pa5ayq8rd?utm_source=poll&utm_medium=link 8am readers need to arrive at 7:45am. While the 10am service is hybrid, we will request readers to read in person from the Sanctuary and arrive at 9:40 am. If you want to read but need to do so from home, drop a line to the office and we will let you know when we can make that happen. The church office selects people to read each week based on a rotating schedule and availability. Those who are selected for any given Sunday will receive an email from the church office near the beginning of that week.

Ongoing and Upcoming Activities and Events Adult Formation and Education Opportunities Coming this Fall: Stay Tuned for More Info Wintun Homeland Stewardship-Stories of Native Ancestors: Sunday, September 12 Come listen to Diana Almendariz, Cultural Practitioner of Maidu-Wintun, Hupa/Yurok descent, tradition and cultural experience. Join us to learn about a true homeland person’s life of awareness. This presentation will be offered on Zoom. More information about the entire fall Seeds of Justice series will be available HERE on our website. (If you’re reading this as a print copy, visit our website and click on the “Land Based Ministries Hub”) The Church Cracked Open on Wednesday nights Our Wednesday night Adult Formation offering will begin on October 13 and run for six or seven weeks (depending on how fast we want to cover the material). Our focus will be Stephanie Speller’s The Church Cracked Open: Destruction, Decline and New Hope for Beloved Community. Spellers is Presiding Bishop Michael Curry’s Canon for Evangelism, Reconciliation, and Creation. She has directed mission and evangelism work at General Theological Seminary and in the Diocese of Long Island; founded The Crossing, a ground-breaking church within St. Paul’s Cathedral in Boston; and led numerous churchwide renewal efforts. She will also be speaking at our diocesan convention coming up in November! Some information about the book, taken from the publisher:

"This book will make a profound difference for the church in this moment in history." ― The Most Reverend Michael B. Curry Sometimes it takes disruption and loss to break us open and call us home to God. It’s not surprising that a global pandemic and once-in-a-generation reckoning with white supremacy―on top of decades of systemic decline―have spurred Christians everywhere to ask who we are, why God placed us here and what difference that makes to the world. In this critical yet loving book, the author explores the American story and the Episcopal story in order to find out how communities steeped in racism, establishment, and privilege can at last fall in love with Jesus, walk humbly with the most vulnerable and embody beloved community in our own broken but beautiful way. The Church Cracked Open invites us to surrender privilege and redefine church, not just for the sake of others, but for our own salvation and liberation.

This discussion will be facilitated by our rector, The Rev. Dr. Pamela Dolan, on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 8:30. Right now the plan is to meet in person but we might switch to Zoom. Stay tuned! And if you have a preference for how to meet, don’t hesitate to contact Pamela or our Formation Chair, Helen Campbell. or Loss by Sandra Marinella. Sandra cites many research studies that show how expressive writing can help us heal from painful areas in our lives. Telling our stories might motivate us to write a memoir or document family history. The author has taught at the Mayo Clinic, at Veteran’s centers, and online. The class format uses discussion topics to build a sense of community, poetry to reflect on, and excerpts from the book that have meaning for the participants. Many writing prompts are presented, but actual writing is optional. Prior writing experience is not required. In the last session, participants may share a writing piece they have completed during the course if they desire. Our own Susan Lugo, who was trained in this course method by the author and has taught this course before, will facilitate. This class will be hosted on Zoom on Tuesdays from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm beginning September 21 and concluding on October 26. Due to the nature of the material, this is not a drop-in class, and those who sign up are asked to attend each week to maintain the continuity of the class. The class minimum size is 6 and the max is 12. If you need assistance in getting set up to Zoom, Susan is willing to help. For inquiries about the class, please contact Susan Lugo—her contact information is in the directory or available from the office. To register for the class, please contact Helen at [email protected]. Children’s Formation Opportunities Coming this Fall Attention Families With Children! Did you receive our August 19 email about upcoming children's formation? If not, we need to add you to our children's ministry list in Constant Contact! Please email [email protected] so we can add you to the list.

In the meantime, please review the following information from Ryan Johnson about her plans for this ministry: We will gather outdoors on the Great Lawn. We will all sit on towels or yoga mats spaced safely apart from one another. We will ask that you please send your little ones with a mask, like they are using when they go to school. Our Children’s Ministry will consist of… Story Ministry (Godly Play): God in our holy stories from scripture. Music Ministry: I play Guitar and music will be present each time. Bible Verses and lessons will also be put to song with guitar and voice, perhaps some castanets and children’s instruments. Art Ministry: Creating art, making things out of objects from nature… flower petals, pine cones, leaves, pine needles, redwood bark. Using all types of plants and petals, we will make artwork with pieces of God’s natural world either brought from my garden, other home gardens, or gathered right there at our church. We have our first day of children’s formation scheduled for Sunday, September 19, most likely from 9:45 to 10:15 am. (Save the date!) We are still in the process of finalizing the full

This will be a 3-night immersive and interactive virtual journey into healing.

We often live in a place of disconnect from our communities, history, land, food, spirit, and bodies. These disconnects are the root causes of the environmental and social crises we face. Join us for this summit to practice ways we can heal these broken connections during the interactive sessions.

Together, we will walk on a virtual meditative journey through the vividly green wetlands in Shawnee National Forest, tour a farm bringing local produce to their community, gather in a racial healing circle, learn to create a simple recipe from in-season ingredients, and so much more.

Join us to be inspired and encouraged in your environmental work by registering for free today. Anyone is invited! There is even an eco-bedtime story for children Tuesday, September 14 at 8:00 pm (Central).

Register for free to access all of the Summit's workshops and you will also receive a free copy of the ebook, Rooted in Healing: A Collection of Quotes, to inspire your healing journey. Wanted: Bulletin Creator! We need help creating each week's bulletins! We've recently purchased a subscription to Rite Series, a computer software designed to help create bulletins for church services. Once one is familiarized with the software, it's very quick and easy to use!

Please prayerfully consider helping our office staff by volunteering to create bulletin drafts. If you are interested, or would like more info, please contact Natalie at [email protected]. Grace Garden Volunteering Opportunity Grace Garden (located on Anderson Road at the United Methodist Church) grows vegetables and fruits to help feed those in our community who are facing food insecurity. You, too, are invited to join in the fun on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 8:00-10:00 am! "Every person…every week…one item of food" The Social Justice and Outreach Committee wants to remind everyone that we are continuing to support our local food banks—Dixon Family Services, STEAC, and the UCD Pantry—during this exceedingly difficult time. All food banks are experiencing huge demands on their food supply. Janet Lane has offered her front porch as a drop-off location for our weekly non-perishable food donations. Janet’s address is in the St. Martin’s Directory. During the Sunday 8:00 am and 10am in-person services, the basket will once again be available in the Narthex for donations. Please note that while we will be collecting in both locations, we can only accept donations in the Narthex at the Sunday 8:00-9:00 am service. Diapers also accepted: There is a need within our parish community to assist with the purchase of disposable diapers. If you wish to help, drop them off to Janet’s front porch when you deliver food. Size 4 is currently needed. Thanks so much! Please support this important outreach project as you are able.
