I hope you all have survived Black Friday, but still we have much to do as we begin this season of Advent. I love two lines from our first reading from the prophet Isaiah: “Why do You let us wander, O Lord from Your ways, and harden our hearts so that we fear You not?” It is a very simple, but profound question. He lets us wander because He loves us and does not want to take back from us the free will that he planted in each of us. Love permits failures, love permits periods of wandering with the hope that we wake up and return home to safety. Many times we want to blame God for our misfortunes, but in reality we have placed
ourselves in these predicaments. But love permits us to learn from our mistakes and then move on and through all of that darkness, God is there with us.
The other line is: “Yet, O Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay and You are the potter: we are the work of Your hands.” You and I are a work in progress; we are an unfinished product. When the potter begins he places upon the wheel a lump of clay. It is the potter who sees the inner beauty of that lump of clay and begins to work his magic; and if he fails the first time, he reduces it to a lump of clay, until the beauty he sees is there before him. God does much the same with us. He is constantly at work with us bringing out the inner beauty that He sees. He works with us until the day that He calls us home. Because of science and all the other “stuff” that we are bombarded with, we lose the awareness of God in our life. I have said it before and I will say it again, instead of saying let us keep Christ in Christmas, we should say let us keep Christ every day in our life.
This December 8th we celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Many of us get confused still on its significance. The Blessed Virgin Mary was born without the effects of the original sin on her soul. What we have to remember is that the Blessed Virgin Mary is totally human. She was given this special gift in order that she might become the Mother of Jesus, the Son of God. Jesus could not be placed in the womb of a woman with original sin. But the Blessed Virgin Mary’s “yes” changed the history of the world for the better. So as we do all the other things in preparation for Christmas; let us not forget the important part that the Blessed Virgin Mary played. Without her “yes” there would be no Jesus, no Christmas, and no redemption.
Changing the subject, I have said this and written about it several times before but I am hearing again some misunderstanding about the Sunday and Holy Day Collections. Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux are partnered NOT merged. What that means simply is this: When you use your envelopes (which designate a parish) or write a check (to your parish), it does not matter whether you put it into the basket at Saint Francis, Saint Bernard, or Our Mother of Perpetual Help. The collections get sorted and the money goes to the designated parish; if you put loose change into the basket, that money stays with the church that you attended. Saint Francis cannot take money from Saint Bernard and vice versa. So please support your parish.
God Bless, Fr. Ray

Today’s gospel tells us to “Be watchful.” This comes natural to families. Parents are watchful of their children’s health, grades and friends. Children are watchful of parental moods. Today’s gospel encourages us to use this ability to see God acting in the innocence, tenderness, love and forgiveness of your family. “Be watchful,” the Lord is already with you.

ADVENT PRAYER: Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a wonder at the wisdom and power of Your Father and ours. Receive my prayer as part of my service of the Lord who enlists me in God's own work for justice.
Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a hunger for peace: peace in the world, peace in my home, peace in my-self.
Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a joy responsive to the Father's joy. I seek His will so I can serve with glad-ness, singing and love.
Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me the joy and love and peace it is right to bring to the manger of my Lord. Raise in me, too, sober reverence for the God who acted there, hearty gratitude for the life begun there, and spirited resolution to serve the Father and Son.
I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, whose advent I hail.
Amen.
ADVENT WREATH PRAYER The following are the Advent wreath prayers that change every week. They are prayed at the lighting of each candle every day during Advent.
Week One:
The first candle is lit, and the prayer for the first week is said.
Stir up Thy might, we beg Thee, O Lord, and come, so that we may escape through Thy protection and be saved by Thy help from the dangers that threaten
us because of our sins. Who livest and reignest for ever and ever. Amen.
During the first week one candle is left burning during the evening meal, at prayers or at bedtime.
Week Two:
Two candles are lit on the second Sunday and allowed to burn as before. The prayer for the week is:
O Lord, stir up our hearts that we may prepare for Thy only begotten Son, that through His coming we may be made worthy to serve Thee with pure souls.
Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
Week Three: Three candles, including the rose candle, are lit on Gau-dete, the third Sunday, and during that week. The following prayer is said:
We humbly beg Thee, O Lord, to listen to our pray-ers; and by the grace of Thy coming bring light into our darkened minds. Who livest and reignest for ever and ever. Amen.
Week Four: All four candles are lit on the fourth Sunday and allowed to burn as before. The prayer said the fourth week is:
Stir up Thy might, we pray Thee, O Lord, and come; rescue us through Thy great strength so that salva-tion, which has been hindered by our sins, may be hastened by the grace of Thy gentle mercy.
Who livest and reignest for ever and ever. Amen.
