Sacred Heart Pymble – Year 3

First Eucharist - This term we are exploring Jesus’ real presence with us, as we prepare to share in the celebra-tion of the Eucharist. We have started to identify the words and actions of the priest during the Eucharistic prayer and explore key scripture passages that facilitate understanding and encourage reflection of the Sacra-ment of Eucharist.

Bible Study:

In Sacred Scripture, the Church constantly finds her nourish-

ment and her strength, for she welcomes it not as a human

word, “but as what it really is, the word of God.”67

“In the

sacred books the Father who is in heaven comes lovingly to

meet his children and talks with them.”68

(CCC104).

Join us each Friday morning from 10am - 11am in the Sacred Heart meeting

room, as we reflect on and explore the Word of God for the coming Sunday.

All very welcome.

STRENGTHEN YOUR FAMILY FAITH Jesus asks us to demonstrate our love for Him through our generosity to others. In our everyday lives, He calls us to share our gifts. “Amen I say to you, whatever you did for one of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Mt 25:40). A gift in any amount given through your Will strengthens our household of faith. Please contact Fr. Boguslaw in the Parish Office on 9144 270 or email him to [email protected] for further information. Thank you for your consideration.

Pope Francis calls faithful married love 'revolutionary' Faithful married love, in which a husband loves his wife like Christ loves the Church, is “revolutionary,” Pope Francis said last Wednesday at St Peter’s Square.

The pope focused his remarks at the general audience on spousal fidelity in every vocation. “A call to love … manifests itself in fidelity, St. Paul is revolutionary to say a husband should love like Christ loves the Church,” the pope continued, “It's a revolution. Always on the way of love.”

“Let us remember that the path of human maturity is the path itself of love that goes from receiving care to the ability to offer care, from receiving life to the ability to give life,” he added.

The Holy Father stated twice, “every Christian vocation is spousal.”

“In the priesthood one loves God's people with all the paternity, tenderness and strength of a husband and a father,” the pope explained. “The Church does not need aspirants to the role of priests, but men to whom the Holy Spirit touches the heart with unconditional love for the Bride of Christ,” he said.

We start from Christ’s “fidelity, his tenderness, his generosity,” Pope Francis said, and from there “we look with faith at marriage and every vocation.”

Liturgy of the Word Year B 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Entrance Antiphon

Forsake me not, O Lord, my God; be not far from me! Make haste and come to my help, O Lord, my strong salvation!

First Reading Dt 6:2-6 A reading from the book of Deuteronomy Hear Israel, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart. Moses said to the people: ‘If you fear the Lord your God all the days of your life and if you keep all his laws and commandments which I lay on you, you will have a long life, you and your son and your grandson. Listen then, Israel, keep and observe what will make you prosper and give you great increase, as the Lord God of your fathers has promised you, giving you a land where milk and honey flow. ‘Listen, Israel: The Lord our God is the one Lord. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength. Let these words I urge on you today be written on your heart.’

Responsorial Psalm (R.) I love you Lord, my strength. 1. I love you, Lord, my strength, my rock, my fortress, my saviour. My God is the rock where I take refuge; my shield, my mighty help, my stronghold. The Lord is worthy of all praise: when I call I am saved from my foes. (R) 2. Long life to the Lord, my rock! Praised be to the God that saves me. He has given great victories to his king and shown love for his anointed. (R) Second Reading Heb 7:23-28 A reading from the letter to the Hebrews This one, because he remains for ever, has an eternal priesthood. There used to be a great number of priests un-der the former covenant, because death put an end to each one of them; but this one, Christ, because he remains for ever, can never lose his priesthood. It follows, then, that his power to save is utterly certain, since he is living for ever to intercede for all who come to God through him. To suit us, the ideal high priest would have to be holy, innocent and uncontaminated, beyond the influence of sinners, and raised up above the heavens; one who would not need to offer sacrifices every day, as the other high priests do for their own sins and then for those of the people, because he has done this once and for all by offering himself. The Law appoints high priests who are men subject to weakness; but the promise on oath, which came after the Law, appointed the Son who is made perfect for ever.

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia! All who love me will keep my words, and my Father will love them and we will come to them. Alleluia!

Gospel Mk 12:28-34 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark This is the first commandment, and the second is similar to it One of the scribes came up to Jesus and put a question to him, ‘Which is the first of all the commandments?’ Jesus replied, ‘This is the first: Listen, Israel, the Lord our God is the one Lord, and you must love the Lord you God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You must love your neighbour as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.’ The scribe said to him, ‘Well spoken, Master; what you have said is true: that he is one and there is no other. To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and strength, and to love your neighbour as your-self, this is far more important than any holo-caust or sacrifice.’ Jesus, seeing how wisely he had spoken, said, ‘You are not far from the kingdom of God.’ And after that no one dared to question him any more.

Gospel Reflection What is the purpose of God's law or command-ments? The Pharisees prided themselves in the knowledge of the law and their ritual require-ments. They made it a life-time practice to study the 613 precepts of the Old Testament along with the numerous rabbinic commen-taries. They tested Jesus to see if he correctly understood the law as they did. Jesus startled them with his profound simplicity and mastery of the law of God and its purpose. What does God require of us? Simply that we love as he loves! God is love and everything he does flows from his love for us. God loved us first and our love for him is a response to his exceeding grace and kindness towards us. The love of God comes first and the love of neigh-bour is firmly grounded in the love of God. The more we know of God's love and truth the more we love what he loves and reject what is hateful and contrary to his will. What makes our love for God and his com-mands grow in us? Faith in God and hope in his promises strengthens us in the love of God. They are essential for a good relationship with God, for being united with him. The more we know of God the more we love him and the more we love him the greater we believe and hope in his promises. The Lord, through the

gift of the Holy Spirit, gives us a new freedom to love as he loves. Do you allow anything to keep you from the love of God and the joy of serving others with a generous heart? Paul the Apostle says: hope does not disappoint us, be-cause God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us (Romans 5:5). Do you know the love which conquers all? "Human life consists in a threefold unity. We are taught similarly by the apostle in what he says to the Ephesians, praying for them that the complete grace of their 'body and soul and spirit' may be preserved at the coming of the Lord. We use the word 'body,' for the nutritive part, the word for the vital, 'soul,' and the word 'spirit' for the intellective dimension. In just this way the Lord instructs the writer of the Gospel that he should set before every commandment that love to God which is exercised with all the heart and soul and mind (Mark 12:30; Matthew 22:37; Luke 10:27). This single phrase embraces the human whole: the corporeal heart, the mind as the higher intellectual and mental na-ture, and the soul as their mediator." (excerpt from ON THE MAKING OF MAN 8.5.10 by Greg-ory of Nyssa)

(c) 2018 Servants of the Word

Family Connection As Christians, our moral behaviour is guided by the two-part commandment taught by Jesus in today’s Gospel: love God and love your neigh-bour as yourself. Many of us learned to use this framework as an examination of conscience. By examining our lives through the lens of these commandments, we have learned that the chal-lenge of these commandments is not in our de-sire to follow them but in our capacity to con-sistently honour these commandments in our daily lives. Read together today’s Gospel, Mark 12:28b-34. Talk about ways in which your family might contribute to the examples of Christian service you found. Choose one of these actions to do together as a family. Conclude in prayer togeth-er asking God to help us show love to our fami-ly members and friends.

ACT OF LOVE O my God, I love you above all things with my whole heart and soul, because you are all good and worthy of all my love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of you. I forgive all who have injured me and I ask pardon of those whom I have injured. Amen.

Universal

In the service of peace

That the language of love and dialogue may always prevail over the language of conflict.

The Eucharist joins heaven and earth; it embraces

and penetrates all creation. The world which came

forth from God’s hands returns to him in blessed

and undivided adoration: in the bread of the

Eucharist, “creation is projected towards

divinization, towards the holy wedding feast,

towards unification with the Creator himself”.

Thus, the Eucharist is also a source of light and

motivation for our concerns for the environment,

directing us to be stewards of all creation.
