This bulletin contains an update from South

David Zubik concerning the status of the pos-sible bringing together of St. Gabriel and St. Elizabeth schools. I would expect there will be an announcement from the Bishop sometime within the next couple of weeks.

The ongoing challenges of pandemic protocol will necessitate some changes in the way we celebrate the feast of St. Blaise, as well as the upcoming distribution of ashes on Ash Wednesday. Under the direction of the guidelines provided by the Vatican and Bishop Zubik, there will be a general blessing of throats given to all under the traditional words of the blessing, rather than individual blessings. This blessing will be given to all in attendance at Masses of Our Lady of Hope this weekend, as well as during Masses on the feast day (February 3rd). While an individual blessing would be preferred by all of us, and certainly most needed in these difficult times, we must continue to follow guidelines for the protection of all. The general blessing “counts” and will no doubt still be of great consolation and benefit to everyone. In the same way, this year’s celebration of Ash Wednesday will follow the Vatican directive for the blessing to be said once for all in attend-ance, followed by individual distribution in which the ashes are sprinkled on the heads of those coming forward, not in the form of a sign of the cross on the forehead. Apparently, this has already been the tradition in Europe for quite some time.

With the increase of baptisms that is, happily, upon us, it is important to note the guidelines for godparents contained in this bulletin. While many people understandably want to honor a close loved one or friend with the title of godparent, it must be remem-bered that a godparent’s role is primarily as a faith role model and to assist in raising the child in the faith. This is why any Catholic godparents, and there must be at least one in each baptism, must

and Catholics in good standing, godparents must be free of imped-iments to receiving the sacraments, especially Holy Communion. For this canonical reason, individuals who are Catholic but not married in the church, by a priest or deacon, are not eligible to be godparents, nor are they eligible to receive Holy Communion. This is a universal canonical rule of the Church, not a policy of our diocese or parish. However, this situation can normally be rectified relatively easily. In many cases, those who are civilly married, either by a JP or at a destination wedding, for example, can have their marriage sacramentally validated in the church; it simply requires filling out some paperwork and exchanging vows before a priest and two witnesses. We understand the circumstances of people’s lives are complex, with many not having fully comprehended, or been adequately taught, the teachings of the Church. I am most happy to assist any couple who would like to have their marriage

further.

Gratefully in Christ,

Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all

things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least

spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come,

I embrace You and unite myself

from You. Amen

Choosing Godparents for your Baby/Child

From time to time, questions and controversies arise as to who may serve as a Godparent for the Sacrament of Baptism. Therefore, this is a review of

Below is the criteria to be considered before the

parents of a child ask someone to be a Godparent for their son or daughter:

Since Baptism is the initial, foundational Sacrament in the life of a Catholic, great care must be taken in deciding who will serve as a Godparent. The guidelines above are meant to assist parents in making a reasonable decision as to who will fulfill this critical role for their child. These guidelines are provided by the universal Church and individual priests are not vested with the authority to dispense from them.

The decision of choosing a Godparent should be based upon who would provide the best example of Catholic living for the child and not merely for reasons of maintaining family harmony. A Godparent is not chosen to honor the Godparent, but for the well-being and faith development of the child.

must be a practicing Catholic, at least 16 years of age and have received the Sacraments of Initiation (i.e. Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation). Furthermore, if this person is married, the marriage must be a valid, sacramental marriage (i.e. one recognized and blessed by the Catholic Church).

The potential Godparent must be registered in a Catholic parish and able to obtain a letter of eligibility from his or her parish priest to be a Godparent.

Only one Godparent is required by Church law. This Godparent may be a man or a woman. However, if two Godparents are selected (the more common practice), then there must be one man and one woman chosen. In other words, a child cannot have two men or two women as Godparents.

In extraordinary situations, when two Catholic Godparents cannot be found, a baptized person who belongs to another Christian denomination (i.e. Methodist, Lutheran, or Presbyterian) may serve as a Christian Witness. However, former Catholics who have left the Catholic Church for another Christian denomination are not permitted to serve, either as a Catholic Godparent or a Christian Witnesses.

Each year the Diocese recognizes the crowning

wedding anniversary with a Mass presided by Bishop Zubik at St. Paul Cathedral, followed by a reception.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass was not held during the fall of 2020. The Diocese is planning two Masses in 2021, celebrating the 50th wedding anniversaries for 2020 and 2021. The two Masses are:

The 15 promises of the Virgin Mary to those who pray the Rosary

The Blessed Virgin Mary made these promises to Saint Dominic and to all who follow that “Whatever you ask in the Rosary will be granted.”

1. Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall receive signal graces. 2. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary. 3. The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat

heresies. 4. The Rosary will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant

mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire for eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.

5. The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall not perish. 6. Whoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred

mysteries shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice, he shall not perish by an unprovided death; if he be just he shall remain in the grace of God, and become worthy of eternal life.

7. Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church. Those who are faithful to recite the Rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and

9. I shall deliver from Purgatory those who have been devoted to the Rosary. 10. The faithful children of the Rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in Heaven. 11. You shall obtain all you ask of me by recitation of the Rosary. 12. All those who propagate the Holy Rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities. 13. I have obtained from my Divine Son that all the advocates of the Rosary shall have for intercessors the entire

celestial court during their life and at the hour of death. 14. All who recite the Rosary are my sons and daughters, and brothers and sisters of my only Son Jesus Christ. 15. Devotion of my Rosary is a great sign of predestination.

Rosaries said in a group receive the merits of the total number of participants.

The Rosary, before Mass, is generally led by members of the Legion of Mary; all are welcome to join us. Please join a group or start one.

For information on the Legion of Mary contact Marlene Yannone at 412-886-1786 or Barbara Hogan at 412-884-3154.

Inspiration for the week

Most of us are not trail blazers. Throughout history though, there have been many folks who tirelessly and persistently pursued the promptings of their hearts without giving any care to what others thought or trends dictated.

Jesus is one of them. St Teresa of Calcutta and St. Francis of Assisi are examples of others. The rest of us are people who take a more measured look at things, want to test the waters, and take our time choosing what path or person to follow.

We need credible witnesses of faith. We need Moses people in our lives to show us by word and deed who God is and what integrity and purpose-driven life looks like. They are the pointers to truth, who even though they struggle themselves, seem to embody an unspoken timeless wisdom that just sounds and feels right.

Jesus taught with this same type of authority and caught the attention of the greatest of skeptics. They were astonished. Even though we need our human prophets we can also be somewhat prophets ourselves by putting integrity and conviction behind our embrace of the Gospel. Perhaps much to our surprise, we all have the power to be a credible witness. Are you willing to give it a try?
