St. John Vianney: A Man for Our Times
August 4 is the feast day of St. John Vianney, the patron saint of parish priests. He led an interesting life and I would like to share his story with you. He was a man with vision, and had to
overcome many obstacles to see his vision realized. First of all, he wanted to be a priest, but his meager formal education did not prepare him adequately for seminary studies. His failure to
understand Latin lectures forced him to discontinue. His vision of becoming a priest, however,
encouraged him to seek tutoring. After a long struggle, he was ordained.
As pastor of the parish at Ars in France, he encouraged people who were indifferent and quite comfortable with their style of living. He prayed and fasted constantly for their conversion,
remembering Jesus’ comment, “Some devils can only be cast out by prayer and fasting.”
With Catherine Lassagne and Benedicta Lardet, he established La Providence, a home for girls.
Only a man of vision could have such trust that God would provide for the spiritual and material needs of all those who came to make La Providence their home.
His work as a confessor is his most remarkable accomplishment. He would spend eleven to
sixteen hours a day hearing confessions, reconciling people with God. He certainly was a dedicated
man with great faith. Otherwise he never would have been able to endure the difficulties that faced him. Many people look forward to retirement and taking it easy, planning to do things they never
had time for before. St. John Vianney did not think of retirement, for as he aged he spent more time serving the people.
St. John Vianney stands out as a man who did not become engulfed with material comfort and possessions, as so much of our world is today. His life reminds us that we can live more simply, and
serving others should be our top priority. Living life as people of service and prayer truly will bring peace and ultimate happiness, not only to those we serve, but ourselves as well.

Pray, Hope and Don’t Worry
On July 31, I will be making a pilgrimage to San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy to visit the tomb of St. Padre Pio. He was a Capuchin Franciscan priest, born in 1887, died in 1968 and canonized a saint in 2002. St. Pio is known throughout the world today as one who was a holy mystic, confessor and devout religious. My personal connection to this modern day saint is one that I have mentioned to people over the years. In 1954, my parents wrote a letter to St. Pio asking that he pray to God that they would have children. St. Pio had written back to my parents indicating that he would pray for them. I was born a year later and my brother Richard three years
later. I truly believe that my existence and priesthood are due to St. Pio’s intercession. As I always do when going on a pilgrimage, I would like to invite you to write any petitions on the lines below. The petitions will be brought with me and remembered at the Masses I will be celebrating there. You may put the petitions in an envelope with “St. Padre Pio Petitions” written on the outside and deposit them in the collection basket or drop them off at the Ministry Center. If you do not wish me to see the petitions, please mark “Confidential” on the envelope. It will then not be opened but the petitions will be remembered at Mass. You may also e-mail the petitions to me at: [email protected]. I will need to have the petitions in my possession no later than Monday, July 29. You will all be remembered in my Masses and prayers during this pilgrimage. Please pray for me as well. Thank you. “Pray, hope and don’t worry,” said St. Padre Pio. Through his intercession may God help us to be people of prayer, hope and trust. Father David _______________________________________________________________________________________________________

[ STEWARDSHIP NOTE FOR TODAY ]
Jesus is describing God’s immeasurable generosity when He says in today’s Gospel, “Whoever asks, receives, whoever seeks, finds; whoever knocks, is admitted.” But it should also be the description of us as Christian stewards – those seeking to follow Christ by using our gifts in service to others. Please remember St. James the Apostle Parish while on vacation. You may put your offering in the collection before you leave or when you return. We count on your generosity all year long. Thank you!
The collection amount for July 20/21 is $11,154.33
Thank you for your generosity-it is deeply appreciated!
Will You Be Volunteering with Minors In this Upcoming School Year?
Out of concern for the safety and well-being of children, every diocesan, parish, school or religious education employee or volunteer who is involved with minors on a regular, recurring basis and those who may have an opportunity to be alone with children during parish, school or religious education sponsored events, are required to attend a Virtus Protecting God’s Children Program and provide a certificate of completion to the parish.
St. James will host four Virtus Workshops in August and September for its parishioners. They are scheduled on Tuesday, August 13th, Wednesday, August 21st, Saturday, September 7th and Saturday, September 21st. Pre-registration is required and must be completed online at www.virtusonline.org. Click on First-Time Registrant in the left column and it will guide you through the process.
Resources Available in the Liturgical Kiosk and the Information Rack
We invite all parishioners to peruse the Liturgical Kiosk in the Narthex and the Information Rack in the Coat Room for a variety of resources and informational brochures for your spiritual enrichment. At the beginning of each month you will find limited copies of “The Word Among Us”, which contains the daily Mass readings as well as reflections. Please stop by today after Mass and take something home with you.

St. Daniel & St. James Youth Ministry
This summers mission trip to Nashville has come to a close! We canNOT thank you enough for your prayers, financial donations, and wishes that you sent with us. We worked hard at building wheelchair ramps, painting & cleaning, digging trenches, moving furniture, working with children, and so much more! Here is our picture from our day off where part of it was spent at the Louisville Slugger museum. We are looking forward to our next big trip in the summer of 2020! But we could not do it without you!

Consider Giving Back to Bless Our Seniors
The Young at Heart Seniors has been a ministry at St. James since 1973. It is the oldest, continual social activity in the parish. We need your help to keep it going. Volunteers are needed to co-ordinate and serve at the September-May, once a month lunches and entertainment. The time commitment is between 4-6 hours per month. This is an ideal volunteer experience for parents of our school children. To volunteer or to learn more, please call Gail at 630 690-2278 or e-mail her at [email protected]. Thank you for your support!
Back to School Food Drive Help Restock the Pantry
The Glen Ellyn Food Pantry extends many thanks for the strong support received from the members of St. James. The food and monetary donations received from St. James and other caring community members enabled the pantry to serve approximately 33,000 people last year.
Now, it is almost time to hit the Back-To-School Restart Button. The shelves of the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry need to be restocked. The summer food donations were lean leaving the shelves looking bare. Of the 33,000 people served last year, 14,000 were children. When shopping, have your children pick out some of their favorites foods to share with children who are in need. Non-perishable donations may be left in the Coat Room at St. James.
Other Glen Ellyn Food Pantry Facts: • Over 4,000 seniors were served last year. • The food value distributed during 2018 was
estimated to be $1,949,111. • Baking goods are in high demand now and
through the end of the year. • Kitchen essentials, such as dish soap, trash bags,
baggies, foil, flour, • Sugar, and paper towels help hungry neighbors
make ends meet.
The Glen Ellyn Food Pantry staff and board members are grateful for the ongoing support received from St. James.
