ACTS 20:7-12 (nRSV)7On the first day of the week, when we met to break bread, Paul was holding a discussion with them; since he intended to leave the next day, he continued speaking until midnight. 8There were many lamps in the room upstairs where we were meeting. 9A young man named Eutychus, who was sitting in the window, began to sink off into a deep sleep while Paul talked still longer. Overcome by sleep, he fell to the ground three floors below and was picked up dead. 10But Paul went down, and bending over him took him in his arms, and said, “Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him.” 11Then Paul went upstairs, and after he had broken bread and eaten, he continued to converse with them until dawn; then he left. 12Meanwhile they had taken the boy away alive and were not a little comforted.

In MemoriamLitany in Remembrance of the

Mother emanuel AMe Church TragedyLeader: A year ago this week, on June 17, 2015, a tragic shooting took place at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina that left us numb. As their heads were bowed in prayer and while studying the Bible, nine people lost their lives. Today, we remember them as they once sat in a place we now stand. We remember them for their commitment to Christ and their church. We remember as members of the communion of saints.

Congregation: Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Leader: We continue to pray for the families of those nine victims. We celebrate their demonstration of unconditional forgiveness, and we call the victims by name that all may know we have not forgotten them.

Congregation: Rev. Clementa Pinckney, Tywanza Sanders, Cynthia Hurd, Rev. Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, Myra Thompson, Ethel Lance, Rev. Daniel Simmons, Rev. DePayne Middleton-Doctor, and Susie Jackson; Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Leader: We cry out to You, O Lord, with weeping eyes and hearts, as the violence in our world has crept into Your sanctuary. During this remembrance, we cry out to You; may Your Kingdom come, may it be on earth as it is in heaven.

Congregation: We cry out for our sisters. We cry out for our brothers. We cry out for the families. We cry out for peace in Jesus’ name, and we cry, Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.Leader: We have come burdened by the weight of injustice and disparity. We come having witnessed the devastating results of racist acts. God, lift us up, be our strength and guide. We have come as the “walking wounded” in need of healing.

All: Lord, we want to advocate for justice, promote understanding, inclusion, and mutual respect, and thus build community within all races, ethnicities, and cultures. Give us strength, wisdom, and knowledge to act. You, alone, are our refuge and fortress. Lead us to that Rock that is higher than I. We acknowledge how damaging and destructive racism is to our world and pray that justice will run down like water and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Written by The Reverend Wayne E. Croft, Sr., DMin., PhD, Senior Pastor, St. Paul’s Baptist Church of West Chester, PA and the Jeremiah A. Wright, Sr. Associate Professor of Homiletics and Liturgics in African American Studies at Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia.

To Do JusticeGod Moves Powerfully in Mauritania!

In your prayers, please take a moment to thank God for powerful movement toward justice in Mauritania, as we celebrate court verdicts of innocence and guilt in the battle to end slavery in that corner of Africa.

On October 12, 2014, Trinity United Church of Christ hosted Championing Freedom: An Interfaith Initiative to End Slavery in Mauritania. This forum was the culmination of diligent efforts by a partnership of Trinity UCC’s Africa Ministry, Masjid Al-Taqwa, and the Abolition Institute (collectively known as Championing Freedom).

Some of our efforts led to a City of Chicago City Council Resolution denouncing slavery in Mauritania and acknowledging the work of Championing Freedom, and signed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel. This document was presented at the forum and an original copy of the Resolution was delivered to the world renown Mauritanian anti-slavery leader, Biram Dah Abeid (who has visited the U.S., including visiting Trinity UCC, as a guest of Abolition Institute).

As Mr. Abeid’s international profile increased, so has the Mauritanian government’s concern. In December of 2014, during a public rally in protest against slavery and racial discrimination, the government arbitrarily arrested Mr. Abeid and his colleague Brahim Randhane. They were both charged with “inciting hatred” and sentenced to 2 years in prison.

With help from numerous national and international protest actions (including phone calls, email campaigns, fundraising, social media campaigns, rallies, etc.), on May 17, 2016 the Mauritanian Supreme Court ruled in favor of Mr. Abeid and Mr. Randhane. This ruling is all the more incredible and historic when considered in the context of another ruling by the Mauritania Slavery Courts just the day before when they convicted and sentenced to prison a slave-owner. This ruling included a demand for “meaningful restitution” to the enslaved women, who had been victimized by this perpetrator. This was only the second time there has been a conviction for slavery, and the first time the conviction culminated in the imprisonment of the perpetrator.

Our celebration is that much sweeter because the legal fights were led by attorneys from SOS Esclaves – the leading NGO on the ground fighting to eradicate slavery across Mauritania – who are also brothers of Haratine ethnicity – the ethnic group most often enslaved and subjected to oppression by Mauritania’s elites. The fight to convict the slave-owners was led by Maitre Mohameden Elid; and the fight to release Biram dah Abeid and his colleague, Brahim Randhane, was led by Brahim Ould Ebetty.

While the struggle to end slavery in Mauritania is nowhere near over, this victory is a major paradigm shift in the way cases are being handled by the Mauritanian courts. Quoting Mauritanian-born, New York activist, Bakary Tandia, the victory of Maitre Elid is the “equivalent of Thurgood Marshall winning the Brown v. Board of Education case in 1954.”
