Dear Friends of St. Louise, Happy Fathers’ Day! A great appreciation to all our dads! Know that you have a greater influence on our lives than what you might think! From a faith point of view, several studies have shown that if a dad is on board with prayer and church, then the children are much more likely to follow suit. In my case, my dad was a great influence in my decision to go the seminary. He more than once would ask us kids what we wanted to do with our lives, and then would ask if we ever thought about a vocation as a priest or a nun. I ended up saying yes! My parents had six children, so one out of six is not bad odds! June 21 is the 34th anniversary of my priestly ordination. I cannot think of my ordination and the Mass of Thanksgiving the next day without thinking of my dad. I often say to people that he was more excited than I was, and that is no exaggeration! What I didn’t know is that he would die unexpectedly just four months later. Neither did I ever expect to be a pastor in the kind of reality we are now facing. What I find is that despite the challenges, God’s love is constant, my call to love others is still the same, and my call to serve as your pastor remains, it just gets lived out in ways that I would not have ever dreamed. It is hard and a blessing all at the same time. Tomorrow, June 22, is Fr. Carlos’ 1st anniversary as a priest, whoo-hoo! He will celebrate and preach at the 9AM Mass on Monday, his anniversary, which as always will be livestreamed. I will be away for a couple of days of break, so look out! Fr. Carlos’ unusual pets might take up residence on the main floor of the rectory! Seriously, I am extremely grateful to God that Fr. Carlos was assigned to St. Louise Parish last year. His ministry is a blessing to all of us. And truthfully, I was grateful when Archbishop Etienne decided to make only minimal changes in priest assignments in light of the pandemic, because I wasn’t certain Fr. Carlos was going to get to stay another year with us! That right there is at least one blessing that has come from this difficult experience. Congratulations Fr. Carlos on your first-year anniversary of ordination to the priesthood. Ad multos annos! As for me and the assignment process, I will end my first term at St. Louise on June 30. Can you believe that six years have already passed? Officially, since the Archbishop is making no new assignments of pastors because of the pandemic, I will be with you as an “interim pastor” for one year. Next year, I will begin my second six-year term. It is almost certain that I will not move next year and I certainly am not going to ask to do so. And the Archbishop needs me to be close to the Chancery as long as I am the Vicar for Clergy. I will see where the Holy Spirit leads me and the Archbishop with that extra assignment once we are on the other side of the pandemic. Be that as it may, for good or for ill, it looks like you will be stuck with me for at least another seven years, God willing. For me, it is all good. Thank you for your love, support, and above all, for your prayers. It is my joy to serve you as your pastor. Fr. Gary’s article continues on page 3 ...

With heartfelt gratitude,

Fr. Gary Zender

What a joy to be celebrating public Masses for the second week-end in a row. Once we enter Phase II, we will be able to move back inside the church. More to come on that when it looks like we are ready to move in that direction. I love seeing at least some of you now and look forward to seeing more of you soon! Congratulations to Deacon Michael Barbarossa, who was ordained to the transitional diaconate in a private ceremony on June 12. God willing, he will be ordained a priest in June of 2021. Most of you will recall that Michael served here as a seminarian intern last year.

Forever Young Virtual Meeting is here! Don’t let that pesky, good-for-nothing virus keep you from being with your Forever Young friends. We all attend at our own risk. As usual, if you have any symptoms of illness, you must NOT attend Mass. Because we are limited to 100 people who can attend our out-door public Mass, the bishops have continued the general dis-pensation from the Sunday Mass obligation. In addition we will continue to livestream our 5PM Saturday and 1PM Sun-day Masses from the chapel. Our hope is to add more out-door Masses as time goes so please visit our website www.stlouise.org, Flocknote or our email newsletter for the most current information.

Access to the church will only be through the main entrance

Masks must be worn at all times while in the church Hand sanitation will be required at the sanitation stations

provided at the main entrance Every other pew will be closed Participants must sit a minimum of 6 feet apart from any-

body not in their family/ household group

We are also looking for volunteers to help greet parishioners and assist with any needs during individual prayer time. Please contact Dawn McIntosh, [email protected], if you would like to volunteer or have any questions.

Blessing of Fathers

God and Father of all creation, we come before You today with humble hearts.

You are our model of a loving father. When we fail and fall short of Your expectations,

You are always there at the end of the day with open arms, ready to heal the cuts and scrapes of the day

and to encourage us to try again and to not give up.

We hold up these men in our midst who act in the world as fathers to their children or models of fathers for others.

Bless them in their moments of doubt and frustration with their children.

Give them warm and open hearts to forgive failures. Provide them with the words needed for encouragement and

perseverance. We ask all this in the name of Jesus.

Amen.

PRAYER TO OVERCOME RACISM

Mary, friend and mother to all, through your Son, God has found a way to unite him-self to every human being, called to be one people, sisters and brothers to each other. We ask for your help in calling on your Son, seeking forgiveness for the times when we have failed to love and respect one another. We ask for your help in obtaining from your Son the grace we need to overcome the evil of racism and to build a just society. We ask for your help in following your Son, so that prejudice and animosity will no longer infect our minds or hearts but will be replaced with a love that respects the dignity of each person. Mother of the Church, the Spirit of your Son Jesus warms our hearts: pray for us. Amen. www.usccb.org/racism

Stewardship • La Corresponsabilidad

Called to Serve as Christ As of June 4, we have heard from 616 fami-lies and for those that were able to make a financial commitment, they raised a total of $1.6 million. We have reached 71% of our $2.3 million goal! We are so grateful for the generous support and sacrifices many fami-

lies have made to be part of this important campaign for our priests, women religious and our faith community – thank you! Overall, for the entire Archdiocese of Seattle, the total amount raised for the campaign so far is $53 million by 17,540 house-holds. The total campaign goal is $100 million. This Fall 71 parishes are lined up for the final and largest wave of the cam-paign. Just a reminder that whatever is our parish total amount paid, St. Louise gets 15% as our parish share, which will go towards our Building Fund. When we reach our goal, that’s a potential of $351K that will help seed our next building pro-ject. If you haven’t had the chance to respond, please visit www.stlouise.org/calledtoserve to learn more about the campaign and also to submit your commitment. Thank you.

Annual Catholic Appeal

We are most grateful to everyone who has had the chance to respond and raise a total of $129,000 so far— that’s 40% of our $295,000 Annual Catholic Appeal goal – thank you! Out of our 2,000-plus households, we’ve heard from 256 families. This is great! If each of the remaining 1,700-plus families made a one-time gift of $100, we would meet and exceed our goal. Howev-er, not everyone might be able to make a pledge, so if you’re able to, kindly consider increasing your gift. Remember, equal sacrifice, not equal gifts. Every amount makes a differ-ence. Please consider making a pledge online by visiting our website at www.stlouise.org and clicking on the Annual Catho-lic Appeal button. Thank you for your generous response.

Hope and Healing After Abortion

“Don’t be afraid to go into your pain, you can continue hiding, ignoring and silencing for more years, but it won't go away. There is light and hope for you...for us. God forgives you and loves you and so does your child. Allow God to lead you and give yourself this time.” - Testimonial It is time. Time to be free of what has been stored away since the abortion decision. To cease being something you always think about. Hurt about. Join the women and men on a Rachel’s Vineyard Healing Retreat and get to know the person you have always hoped to be.
