For Everyone | Stilling Your Storm

Luke 8: 22-25

22 One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they set out, 23 and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. 24 And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they mar-veled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even winds and wa-ter, and they obey him?”

Study Questions:

For Everyone | Stilling Your Storm

Luke 8: 22-25

Jesus asks the question, “Where is your faith?” Jesus could be saying they have no faith or that their

faith is redirected to something else. Discuss both possibilities and the relevance to you.

In Mark’s account, the disciples wake up Jesus saying, “Don’t you care we are perishing” (Mark 4:38)? What is weak in their faith at this moment? Have you ever thought the same thing?

On Sunday Pastor Jake suggested the disciples could have interpreted the circumstances of the storm in a way that would have encouraged their faith. Below are three ways. Discuss.

• Jesus said we would make it through the storm (vs.22)!

• Storms don’t seem to startle him! • If I sink he sinks!

Jesus speaks peace to the storm outside of them, and then begins to calm the storm inside of them. Discuss the three following scenarios people experience:

• Peace on the outside and a storm on the inside.

• Storm on the outside and a storm on the inside. • Storm on the outside and peace on the inside.

When God gives promises of peace, so often it's a peace on the inside though there is none on the out-side. Can you think of Scriptures that address this kind of peace? Can you share a time you’ve experi-

enced this?

The disciples are confronted more than ever with Jesus’ identity because of the storm.

a) Who did they think he was before? b) What are they beginning to think he is after?

c) Our awareness and esteem of Jesus is sometimes tied with God letting us go through storms.

Why? Can you give a personal example?

Is there an area of life that you feel like you are sinking? Share with the group and pray for one another.
