PLANT OF THE WEEK

The Black-Eyed Susan originated in the Eastern United States and now grows across most states. It was historically used as a Native American medicinal herb and some parts of the plant even have nutritional value. The flower is extremely easy to grow and produces an abundance of blooms, which attract butterflies.

Lake Junaluska Assembly celebrates its 104th birthday this week.

The Second General Missionary Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South was the first event to be held at the new Southern Assembly in 1913. (The assembly was renamed Lake Junaluska Assembly in 1929).

At that five day event, an offering of $150,000.00 was collected for the purpose of establishing missions around the world. Some of those missions still exist today.

ABILITIES TENNIS ASSOCIATION MOUNTAINEER TENNIS TOURNAMENTAbilities Tennis Association of North Carolina hosted its first tournament at Lake Junaluska on Saturday, June 17. There were a total of 30 participants: 15 athletes and 15 volunteers.

“The United States Tennis Association generously made it possible for Abilities Tennis to add a sixth tournament to the schedule, which allows ATANC to provide tournaments from the mountains to the coast,” said Lou Welch, executive director of ATANC. “The athletes had a great time competing on the courts and socializing with each other. I think that the word will get out and the program will grow in this part of the state.”

The organization offers tennis opportunities to people with intellectual disabilities of all levels.

ATANC has free tournaments and clinics across North Carolina, which allows events to be more accessible. This

encourages athletes to be physically active, participate in competition and socialize.

Athletes from across North Carolina attended this event, from Wilmington to Haywood County.

“We look forward to hosting athletes from all over North Carolina at future tournaments at Lake Junaluska,” said Ken Howle, director of advancement for Lake Junaluska.

The event last weekend included a round robin tournament, unified doubles, a pool party and dinner. Players with limited experience were offered individual attention and were able to practice on the skills court.

“It was a joy and honor to assist with the ATANC Mountaineer Tennis Tournament at Lake Junaluska,” said Phyllis Capponi, a local volunteer. “The smile on the faces

of the players when they won their match was very rewarding to me. Lou Welch, the organizer, is to be commended for bringing ATANC to Lake Junaluska.”

GRAND MARSHAL FOR PARADE ANNOUNCED

VISITORS THIS WEEK AT LAKE JUNALUSKA

Mark Woods, superintendent of the Blue Ridge Parkway, will serve as Grand Marshal for the Independence Day Parade. The theme for the parade is “This Land is Our Land: Celebrating Our National Parks.” Woods, who lives at Lake Junaluska, is retiring this year after nearly 40 years of service and the Independence Day Celebration at Lake Junaluska will be his last official function in office. Everyone is invited to see Woods in the Independence Day Parade on July 4th. It begins at 11 a.m. at Lambuth Inn and proceeds along North Lakeshore Drive.

“These events allow us to come together as family, friends, community and nation,” Woods said.

A full schedule of events is available at lakejunaluska.com/july4th. To reserve a float, email mjohnson@lakejunaluska.

The Summer Youth Events will continue at Lake Junaluska June 25 – July 2.

The theme will carry on from earlier sessions: “#LoveYourSelfie: Appreciating God’s Masterpiece in the Mirror.” The youth will also continue to pack meals for Rise Against Hunger.

June 25 – 28 will headline Troy Benton and The Advice. June 29 – July 2 will have Lane Davis and Jimmy Atkins as the worship leaders and speakers.

Both events will conclude with a walk to the cross at Inspiration Point, a tradition at Lake Junaluska.

J. Philip Newell, a leading expert on Celtic Spirituality, will speak at a retreat at Lake Junaluska June 30 – July 2.

The spiritual retreat will offer worship and contemplation of Celtic Spirituality. John Philip Newell will speak during four sessions.

Newell is a poet, peacemaker, scholar and Church of Scotland minister. He is widely recognized for authoring 15 books about Celtic Spirituality.

The theme for the retreat is “Listening for the Heartbeat of God: A Retreat With J. Philip Newell.” The event will include Taize Worship and creative workshops, all in an effort to become closer with God.

There will also be recreational activities such as yoga, a self-guided prayer walk and other activities included in the retreat.

Registration costs $215. Registration is available at the door at Harrell Center Auditorium.

Rankin (standing, on right) leads one of last summer’s Jam Sessions.

VOLUNTEER PROFILE: DON RANKINDon Rankin has a heart for music and for Lake Junaluska. Rankin worked as a United Methodist minister in Kentucky before retiring and moving to Lake Junaluska in 2008. He and his wife Patricia had visited the lake for years.

After the move, Rankin first picked up the banjo and began learning how to play mountain music.

Today Rankin helps coordinate the lake’s Jam Sessions, where local musicians come together to play by the lake.

This year’s first Jam Session is Friday, June 30 at 7 p.m. Anyone is welcome to bring an instrument and strum along. Rankin will lead, along with local

musician Judy Sipes, in an evening of Appalachian music that is free and open to all. Sipes is an award-winning autoharp and fiddle player, and Rankin said that she is invaluable to the coordination of the Jam Sessions.

Aside from the Jam Sessions, Rankin volunteers in many other capacities around Lake Junaluska.

As a part of the July 3 Garden Tour (9 a.m. – 12 p.m.), Rankin and friends will play favorite tunes at the Susanna Wesley Garden next to the World Methodist Museum throughout the morning.

The Rankins are both members of the Junaluskans, and last year they acted as

coordinators for the set-up of the lake’s Christmas decorations.

The Rankins are also members of the Board of Directors for the Lake Junaluska Associates and the Lake Junaluska Assembly Property Owners Association.
