FROM FATHER TERRY J+M+J

Today we celebrate the Most Holy Body and Blood of

Christ also known as Corpus Christi. It is on this day

that we rejoice in the awesome gift of the Eucharist.

Our Catholic faith proclaims that, Jesus is truly,

mysteriously, and substantially present in the Eucharist

under the mere appearance of bread and wine. This is

our firm belief since the time of the apostles. To be

Catholic is to believe in the True Presence. As we

emerge out of the pandemic, what a blessing it is to be

able to receive the Body of Christ. I have heard so

many comments of late about the blessings of being

able to receive Holy Communion once again. Praise

the Lord. I am happy that so many are back at the

eucharistic table!

We are reminded today of our continual call to deepen

our love and understanding of the Eucharist. We do

this through such things as prayer, study, and charity.

A wonderful way to pray is to come before the Blessed

Sacrament. We have now returned to our bi-monthly

Holy Hours. We can also arrive early to Mass, and stay

after, to take some time before Jesus in the Eucharist.

As the pandemic ceases, I hope we can soon be open

for private prayer. In terms of reading, the Bible and

the Catechism of the Catholic Church will surely unite

us more to the Eucharist. I also recommend the

following books, Bishop Robert Barron’s Eucharist

and Scott Hahn’s The Lamb’s Supper. Finally, charity.

May we always try to make sure what happens on the

altar, happens in our words and actions. Being

Eucharist will transform the world.

Today’s solemnity also recalls our need to have the

proper disposition in receiving Holy Communion. If

we need to confess our sins before receiving the

Eucharist, let us take advantage of God’s mercy in the

Sacrament of Reconciliation. Also, we are reminded of

our need to bow before receiving Holy Communion

and of the importance of saying “Amen” when offered

the Body. When we say amen, we are saying, “I

believe what you said, it truly is the Body of Christ.”

Some have asked me about when the Blood of Christ

will be offered. We pray that some day soon we can

offer the Blood of our Lord. In the end, we celebrate

Jesus’ wonderful gift today. May we rekindle our love

and hope today in the Eucharist, which awaits us at

each Mass and every time we enter the doors of our

churches.

As announced at last Sunday’s Masses, Fr. Jack is being

transferred. He will become the Parochial Vicar at Our

Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Observatory Hill/

Perrysville/Ross/West View. He is also assigned to

begin studies in canon law. We will miss Fr. Jack and

we thank him for his wonderful service to the parish. I

will say some more about Fr. Jack as we approach his

farewell. As we say goodbye to Fr. Jack, we say hello to

Fr. Adam Potter as our new Parochial Vicar. Fr. Adam

is Fr. Jack’s classmate. Fr. Adam’s most recent

assignment was as Parochial Vicar of St. Teresa of

Kolkata Parish in Beechview/Brookline. When I was

Vice Rector of St. Paul Seminary, Fr. Adam was a

seminarian. I can surely say that we are blessed to have

Fr. Adam joining us. They will begin their assignments

on Thursday, July 1, 2021. Please keep them in your

prayers.

As we welcome Fr. Adam, we also welcome a couple of

new employees. Rachel Begg recently began as a part-

time Administrative Assistant at the Parish Center. She

will be working in tandem with Saira. They are going to

make a terrific team! With the addition of Rachel, our

new hours will be extended to 9 – 4 p.m. We also

welcome back Kathleen Strangis, who recently retired

as our Administrative Assistant. Kathleen is now our

part-time Safe Environment Coordinator. It is great to

have her back and we know that she will do a wonderful

job. We are so blessed to have Rachel and Kathleen

with us. Please keep them in your prayers.

This weekend, June 5 - 6, we will have our Mission

Appeal. We have been called upon to support the

Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate conception. A

detailed letter about the sisters and their mission is in

the bulletin. Please be as generous as you can in

supporting the sisters and their great work.

Praise the Lord that we are now at 100% seating

capacity with no social distancing requirement!

Although we are inching closer to normalcy, we are still

not there yet. There is still a mask requirement for those

not fully vaccinated. We will also have a special section

in the front right of each of our churches for those who

still want to practice social distancing. I am happy to

report that holy water is back in the fonts. Please find

more details about the precautions in the bulletin.

Handmaid of the Lord

The Resource Task Force recently began analyzing

our campuses. The first tour took place this past

Tuesday, June 1 at St. Robert. During that time the

task force did an extensive walk through of all the

buildings and property. Each of them was called upon

to fill out an assessment form provided by the

diocese. To assist one another, we had good and

healthy collective discussions of all that we were

seeing. The areas of assessment on the form included

Worship, Impact on Ministry, and Location. It was

wonderful to see the task force coming together and

offering their expertise. Our next assessment will be

of the Corpus Christi campus on Tuesday, June 8.

This assessment will be one of many tools used to

help us discern what buildings we need for our bright

future. I share with you another resource that will be

used. The task force has been given the

CannonDesign Report. The diocese had all of the

parishes in the diocese assessed by the CannonDesign

Facility Optimization Solutions. The report takes a

look at the conditions of our properties and sets forth

repairs, with estimated costs, that should be addressed

over a 5 and 10 year period. The report, just for our

campuses, is 500 pages. I will share with you other

resources used as we move forward. Please keep the

entire process in your prayers.

MASS INTENTIONS

The Mass is the highest form of prayer

we have. We are blessed that the

normally scheduled Masses for 2021

are filled with intentions. However,

you may still request intentions to be

offered privately by one of our clergy team.

Intentions may be said for either the living or the

deceased and a $10 Mass stipend you offer goes

directly to the priest. Masses will be offered in the

year 2021, however, no specific date may be

reserved, as each priest receives intentions from

several sources and organizes their own intention

lists.

Please turn in your intentions to the Parish Center or

place in the offertory during mass.

MISSION COOPERATION SUNDAY

This weekend is

Missionary Cooperation

Sunday. We remember

through our baptism that

we are all called to be

missionaries and share

the love of Christ.

Whether it be through

how we live our daily lives as Christians or reach out

a helping hand to the less fortunate. And one does not

have to travel to faraway lands to fulfill this vocation.

Today’s second collection will be for the mission

group, the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate

Conception, and through these funds, you can

remotely help them provide food, medical attention,

and operate an orphanage and school in El Salvador.

In addition to the second collection at mass,

donations may also be dropped off at Mary Mother

of God Parish Center during the week.

Thank you!

MISSION COOPERATION SUNDAY

WHO: Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception

WHAT: 2021 MCP Collection

WHEN: June 5-6, 2021

WHERE: Mary Mother of God Parish

WHY: Thank you for your support of this missionary appeal and the opportunity to share with you the work we do

here in Patzún, Guatemala. We are Franciscans Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, a congregation of more than

1,000 women serving in 23 countries. Our Mother House is in Mexico City and our Province House is in El Salvador.

We provide food, medical attention, an orphanage and school from pre-kindergarten through senior high. The people

of Patzún and its outlying villages are predominately Kaqchiquel, one of the peoples of the ancient Mayan empire.

The economy is based on agriculture. The land is rich. Harvests of broccoli and snow peas make their way to

American families as does the coffee that is grown on the mountain slopes leading down to Lake Atitlán. Boys and

men work the fields as women and girls sell homemade tortillas and colorfully embroidered clothing in the market.

The people are very poor, even by Guatemalan standards. Absentee land owners pay very little. 1 to 2 thousand US

dollars a year is common. Many houses are made of sticks and clay and mud. Water is contaminated with bacteria and

parasites. Many leave for America looking for work.

In 1964 Padre Justiniano, a missionary Franciscan priest started our school, San Bernardino. He saw that the

Indigenous children did not attend the government schools. The orphanage, nutrition center and hospital were all

started by Sara Merdes of Corpus Christi, Texas. She was born and raised in Pittsburgh. Her great nephew, Fr. John

Gizler, a priest of the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

San Bernardino is the clear path to employment in the modern economy. It pioneered secondary education locally

in 1999 and its students rank among the best in state and regional standardized testing. Even in good times parents

struggle to pay tuition. These are not good times. With the pandemic 152 students withdrew, leaving 717. Next year

we expect only 645. Many teachers and staff were laid off yet the budget is not balanced. An additional $40,000 is

urgently needed for calendar year 2021. The St. Francis Orphanage and the Nutrition programs are 100% charities.

The hospital charges for services. The people pay what they can. Expenses exceed revenues.

Gladys is a typical mission success. At 5 years, civil authorities took her from her dirt floor home and placed her

in the orphanage. She was bathed, treated for parasites and put into clean clothing. She thrived at the St. Francis

orphanage. Gladys was an excellent student. She always watched out for younger kids. At 13 she chose to be baptized

and joined the Catholic Church. She left at 14, claimed by her married elder sister. Things did not go well and soon

Gladys was with us again. She trained to be a teacher, taught several years at our Franciscan school in Guatemala

City. Her students loved her. Gladys always donated a portion of her tiny salary to the poor. She entered nursing

school. With tuition support from Holy Sepulcher she graduated. She is 5 years into her nursing career. Gladys, her

husband and their son live in Antigua. Gladys credits the missions for transforming her life.

St. Ann in Waynesburg, St. Richard in Richland, Holy Sepulcher in Glade Mills (Butler county) and Oakland

Catholic provide financial support, donate items, and make short term mission visits. Additionally Waynesburg

University has sent many students on mission and has brought several Guatemalan children and workers from Patzún

to their Greene County campus. The pandemic increased demand for services from the orphanage and nutrition

program. Half scholarships have enabled many of the very poorest families send their children to San Bernardino.

Expanding that program could bring back dozens, maybe hundreds, setting the students on their path to financial

independence. Just when we needed more from Pittsburgh their ability to help was greatly curtailed.

This is a crisis. Please help. The Franciscan Sisters will be in Patzún for as long as we are needed. Please give as

you can. We know the faith, friendliness, and fidelity of Pittsburgh.

Mother Sara Lizbeth Avila Barrientos

Superior of San Bernardino
